The Watson’s Go to Birmingham – 1963Christopher Paul Curtis A humorous novel told from the point of view of ten-year old Kenny Watson.  Kenny’s family lives in Flint, Michigan and they do not face discrimination in their everyday life.  However, when his family travels south to Birmingham, Alabama to visit their Grandmother, their world is forever changed.
Leon’s StoryLeon WalterTillage Leon Tillage was born in 1936 and grow up in North Carolina during the time of Jim Crow laws.  He was the second oldest of nine children and his parents were sharecroppers.  Leon went to segregated schools, and his family was targeted by the Ku Klux Klan.  As a young man, he and took part in the civil rights movement.

Roll of Thunder, Hear My CryMildred D. Taylor Nine-year-old Cassie Logan tells the story of growing up in segregated Mississippi.  Cassie and her brothers cannot go to the same school as white children and are forced to walk an hour to and from school each day.  Cassie’s family lives in constant fear of the Ku Klux Klan.
