2. Tips on how to create a successful storyboard
As I am not the best drawer in the world, storyboards are something I quite often avoid as I find
difficulty in creating them and making them look good due to my lack of artistic skills. I have
carried out some research in order to try and find some inspiration as storyboarding is a vital part
of the planning process for my final product therefore by looking for tips and pointers I can put
myself in a better position for when I create a storyboard for my film trailer.
Firstly I carried out some research on YouTube where I come across a filmmaker who also
struggled to overcome the problem of creating a successful and professional storyboard as he
lacked artistic skills.
Here I have took a screenshot of the YouTube video where an example of a good storyboard has
been used, as the video progressed he started showing examples of his own storyboards where
the art wasn’t as good or detailed as this. He begun
To start showing examples of his storyboards which
weren’t as advanced as this storyboard but he said
as long as you know what's going off in each frame of
the storyboard and what you need to do on set then
art skills do not matter too much.
3. Different storyboard methods
A method of storyboarding that I’m considering doing is a post it note method. By doing a
storyboard on post it gives me a number of advantages. One of the advantages of completing my
storyboard on post it notes is that my drawing doesn’t have to be to a high quality standard as
long as I understand what is happening in each frame and what I need to do during filming. Not
only this but post it notes allow me to easily move them around and organise them in the order
that I need them in, it is also easier to add and remove different scenes if I have a change of mind
on any of them. Below is an example of the post it note storyboard method, as you can see they
are easily arranged in to the sequence of scenes that is going to take place during the filming of
the final product, It is also worth mentioning that the drawings on the post it notes aren’t the
best which is a massive benefit to me as drawing isn’t a strength of mine.
