Overall Outlook of an NYC Elementary
School
• The curriculum must focus on a
definite objective with a flexible
approach
• The project works in curriculum
should integrate all STEAM subjects,
namely, Science,Technology,
Engineering, Art, and Math)
• A cohesive elementary curriculum’s
framework must also contain social
studies’ among other school projects.
Basics of Mathematics Curriculum
• TERC curriculum must be applied as a
foundation of Math in NYC elementary
schools.
• The Investigations in Number, Data, and
Space (TERC) was devised for providing a
conceptual understanding of the subject
and guide the learners towards becoming
more equipped mathematical thinkers.
• The subject should be taught in small and
whole groups.The goal should be to
assist students in making mathematical
connections and extend the development
of logical thinking.
Basics of Social Studies Curriculum
• The curriculum must focus towards
developing a sense of ‘community’
and ‘citizenship’ among elementary
school children.
• The curriculum must also strive to
teach children co-existence, respect
and tolerance.
• The curriculum may include
important events, understandings,
and concepts of the American history.
Importance of the Involvement of
Technology in the Curriculum
• The use of technology as a tool for
understanding and research is
significant for elementary school
children.
• Students should learn how to
research, create, and navigate their
way through studies by using various
applications and internet resources.
• While exploring technology, creating
and learning ideas through it, digital
citizenship must also be taught to the
students.
A Balanced Literacy Approach
• A balanced literacy can be achieved by
utilizing the strengths of the language
and phonic approaches for providing a
real foundation for learning.
• Students must be met at an individual
level and must be supported as well as
challenged in their quest for developing
increased aptitude in literacy.
• Instruction in writing, reading, spelling
and public speaking should be a part of
the curriculum and must take place in
individual settings, small groups, and
whole groups.
