                                 Mobility in Small Business




Small Business Owners,
The Need for Mobile Technology in Small Business The changing business environment poses new
challenges for every participant, but especially smaller companies. From globalization, to the pace of
product development, to changing customer relationships, forces are at work that makes it increasingly
necessary for small firms to sharpen their business practices to stay competitive. Of course this is true for
everyone, but the risk (and also the opportunity) can be greater for small companies, which may find they no
longer have a lock on national, regional, or even local customers. The products and services that helped you
build your business may no longer be sufficient given technology advances that help competitors and also
raise performance expectations of customers.

According to IDC research, faster-growing small businesses are more likely to own smartphone. Small
businesses that use smartphones also are twice as likely to buy more in the next 12 months

Small businesses have always benefited by being flexible and mobile; smartphones help sustain those
critical attributes even as companies grow.

Almost every new technology used by small businesses has delivered benefits that are quite different from
(and often much greater than) those included in early ROI calculations.

Essentially, as a small business, you need to look strategically at mobile technology investment but
implement tactically. Start with the most immediate need, the one with the most obvious payback, and build
from there. Your adoption plan will likely need constant revision, but at least it will give you a place to start
and measure progress. Sound planning, combined with flexibility in technology use, will ensure that
investments in smartphones and related mobile support will pay off for your organization.

Positive employee experiences with smartphones naturally stimulate more use. According to IDC research,
faster-growing small businesses are more likely to own smartphones. Small businesses
that use smartphones also are twice as likely to buy more in the next 12 months (see Figure 1). They want
to extend technology access to others in the organization. Typically, this is not a formal staged adoption
process but rather an opportunistic move to extend smartphone benefits beyond the initial user constituency.
Fast-growing companies are more likely than small firms in general to have benefited from smartphones,
and they are more likely to buy more to expand the number of employees using these devices.
How to create a mobile network?
In today’s economy there has been no more confusing technology then business mobility. What does the
term mobility really mean? What is mobile is it a cell phone, a PDA, or a WI-FI enabled laptop? Or is it a
little bit of all of them. Maybe mobility is in the network the ease of being connected to your important
information no matter what device you are using. If that is how you’re thinking of mobility then you are
halfway there. Yes, I said halfway there, the other and most important half is what many businesses fail to
understand.




That is mobility is your culture, applications, and how your business relates to your employees and
customers. In short mobility is you. Here’s why no mobile solution can be effective for you if it’s not tailored
for the way you do business. Many companies that have tried and failed at mobility have blamed their failure
on not having the right device or network. Then they compound their failure by buying more devices and
trying the latest greatest network offering without taking a look at the real barrier to why their mobile project
keeps failing that is how they do business. Instead of creating a mobile assessment of how their business
works and which parts of their business can become mobile and what parts should be left as they are.
Instead they depend on the marketplace to tell them how to run their business in the mobile environment.

While the mobile market has some great products and services they are only tools to help you build your
mobile network but, they are not your network simply because they don’t know how your business works. So
they really can’t make you mobile only you can do that. So the question you should be asking me is “How
can you make my business mobile, and where do we start”? The fact that you are asking that question
means you are thinking that mobility is more than just devices.

The Mobile Solution We Offer
Now that you know about mobility I want to tell about the solution we offer called “MERP” [Mobile Enterprise

Our consultant would develop a multi-year plan on how you can update your mobile system that would
eliminate the need to purchase new mobile devices every time mobile device makers tell you that you need
the "latest and greatest" mobile devices to stay ahead of your competition. In most cases, you can keep a
mobile device for at least three years before changing it. And depending on the type of application upgrades,
you can extend that life to four years with your fixed PCs and laptops systems. The final thing a consultant
will show you is both the ROI and TCO of mobility. Now sometimes it will seem like there is no monetary
ROI, but in time, increased productivity that comes from a completely planned and successfully implemented
mobile network will save your company money as opposed to a "piece meal" pay-as-you-go network. It'll be
well worth the expense.
MERP System Integration Services
The next step in creating a mobile network is system integration. This is the most important but sometimes
overlooked part of a mobile network. It's probably because many mobile devices can access email and the
Internet on their own, and IT staffs in most companies feel that's all that is needed for a mobile worker.
Nothing can be further from the truth. Like any other device in your system, mobile devices must be able to
"talk" to that system if you want your mobile staff to get the true benefits of having a mobile device.
