career is expected. Mentoring relationships may be formal and assigned; some are informal
and develop naturally; however, all mentoring relationships require attention and
nurturing to be beneficial. The mentors you have in your career’s early stages may not be
the same in later career stages. Mentors do not always need to be senior in rank to you.
Keep you and your priorities in mind as you cultivate your mentoring
relationships.Purpose: To assist you in determining goals for a mentor-mentee

source of information. So, instead of forcing yourself to meet and greet as many new people

2. as possible, spend some time focusing on a few strategic relationships to move your career
forward.The truth is, when it comes to relationships, it’s not quality that matters—it’s
quality. Having substantial special relationships with people who know you and understand
you can help you over time is the real key to networking success.As a professional, you will
want to create a network tree to help share resources and information. You don’t have to
have 300 LinkedIn contacts or 500 Facebook friends to call yourself networked. However,
you do need to tap into those networks of people to access professionally. Use the
networking template on the next page to identify them. The tree starts with identifying
specific individuals to help you progress in your career.Networking trees have immense
potential for supporting both short-term and long-term envisioning regarding one’s
networking needs and using a tiered approachPurpose: To help you locate influential
