Class Information
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Thisisanintroductoryclassinthe fundamentalsof drawing. The studentwill beexploringtraditionalandexperimental
methodsindrawing.There isstrongemphasisonfoundationskillssuchasform,value,compositionandperspective.
Perceptualskills andself -expressionwillalsobe stressed.Thestudentwillworkfromnature,man-madeobjectsandhisor
herownimagination.Non-objectiveandabstractconsiderationswill beexaminedinrepresentational andexperimental
drawing. A varietyof mediawillbe introduced,suchasgraphite,charcoal,conte,penandink. Ourexplorationof diverse
drawingstyles,concepts,andmethodswill provide youwiththe skillsnecessarytoproduce personallyfulfillingartistic
statements.
Academic Dishonesty Policy and Penalty for Violation:
Academicdishonestywill notbe tolerated.Anystudentwhocommitsacademicdishonestywill receiveagrade of zero
for the assignmentortest.A secondinstance of cheatingwill culminate inastudentbeinggivenanFor failure forthe

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Fundamental Techniques
Duringclass,we will discussthe fundamental techniquesaslistedinthe course objectives.Demonstrations will be
followedbyin-classworktime whereyouwill completeexercisesusingthe demonstratedtechnique(s).
PowerPointLectures
Instructional imagesandexamplesfromArtHistorywill provide abroadarray of imagesthat will amplifyandenhance
studentunderstandingof givenobjectives.Itisimportanttohave a substantial knowledge of imagerytocreate personal
workwithgreaterdepthand vision.
ClassCritique
Afterwe have completedourprojects,the classwill gathertodiscussourwork.Bylooking andtalkingaboutourwork
and the wayin whichothersperceive it,we will come tounderstandthe essentialsof visual communication.
METHODS OF EVALUATION
1. Homework
Homeworkconsistsof practice drawingsyouwill execute inyoursketchpadsandsketchbooks.Practice isessential to
developingyourskillsandyouwill findthatprogressisdifficultwithoutit.
2. Projects
Drawingprojectswill be assignedtobe completedoverthe course of a weekorlonger.These assignmentswill require
youto applydemonstratedtechniquesandtothinkof your workand the way inwhichmeaningcanbe communicated
visually.We willhave afewmid-sizedprojectsandone final project,all of whichwe willdiscussasclassprogresses. A
complete listof class projectsis found under“Tentative Schedule” below.
GRADING PROCEDURES
Each assignmentwill have a specificsetof stated objectivesthat must be fulfilleduponcompletion.
Three primary factors determine the grade on any givenproject:
C-P-O=Concept/Professionalism/Originality
1.Concept:Were the stated objectivesof the projectrealized?Did the studentutilizedesignelementsand
principlestocreate cohesiveandunifiedcomposition?Didthe student demonstrate anabilitytounderstandthe
conceptual requirements of eachassignedprojectanda willingness/abilitytoadhere tostandardguidelines?
2. Professionalism:Didthe studentuse assignedmaterials/techniquestobestadvantage?Wasthe project
finishedcompletelyandthoroughlyinthe time given?Didthe studentdemonstrate sufficienttechnical skillto
produce finishedpresentationsinkeepingwith professional industryandgallerystandards?
3. Originality:Are the designsinnovativeandoriginal,orsimplyrote copiesof the examplesgiven?Didthe
studentdemonstrate anabilitytocompose designelementswithasufficientdegreeof originalityand
creativity?

Utilizingpencil,andthenpen,anassignmentinwhichbasicshapesandspace are isolatedtoproduce a
representationof negativespace.Special attentiontocompositional issuesincludingbalance andform.

Utilizingpencil andpen, studentscreate acontourline drawingof a simple stilllife.Special attentionispaidto
line weight,composition,shape,andmethodsforcreatingspatial depth.Additionally,line qualityand
professionalismare emphasized.

3. Pareidolia
Utilizingpencil andpen,thisprojectdealswithgeneratingpatternsandgestureswithmultiple approachesto
pendrawing.Studentsare encouragedtoexperimentwithvariousmethodsforcreatingvalue andpatternusing
hatching,cross-hatching,repetition,andothertechniques.Additionally,compositional unityanddesigntheory
are exploredbyforminga"face"from the line experimentation.

4. Pattern and Boxes
Utilizingpenandpencil,thisprojectdealswithfirstexploringmethodsof approaching compositional/spatial
issuesinthe representationof simple box shapesplacedatvaryingangles.Once compositional/spatial issues
have beensolvedusingbasiclinearperspective strategies,studentsapplypatternanddesigntoselectedplanar
areas to create a richermore vibrantcomposition.

5. Stippling
The stipplingprojectusesapre-plotted"map"of a face inwhichstudentsmustfill incorrespondingareasof
value bystipplingorcross-hatchinginpeninordertocreate the illusionof shading/chiaroscuro.

6. Charcoal Value Studies
Switchingtocharcoal,studentsproduce several "value"scaleswitheachtype of material inordertomasterthe
blendingtechniquesandtobecome familiarwiththe propertiesof eachtype of charcoal.Additionallystudents
produce an 11 square scale of value fromwhite toblack as graduallyandconvincinglyaspossible.

7. Simple Still Life
Usingcharcoal, studentsfirstcreate arough sketchinvine,andthenfill inthe highlightsandshadowsof a
simple still life.Special attentionispaidtothe role of lightand shadow increatingthe illusionof volume.
Studentsare encouragedtostayaway from"cartoon" linesandproduce convincingrepresentationsby
indicatingsubtle shiftsinvalue.

8. 2-PpintPerspective "FloatingModules"

Usingcharcoal and tape maskingtechniques,studentsemploy2-pointperspectivetocreate fanciful/futuristic
shapesfloatinginthe compositional space.Complex architecturesare exploredaswell as atmosphericeffects.
Charcoal is usedmethodicallyalongwithtapinginordertoproduce crisparchitectural linesthatarticulate the
variousplanarsurfacesof the studentsimaginarycreation.

9. AdvancedStill Life
Usingcharcoal, studentsexplore more complex still-life strategiesinordertoachieve the illusionof texture,
fabric,glass,transparency,reflection,complex organicshapes,andcomplex man-madeobjects.Special
attentionisgiventocomposition,lighting,andprofessionalism.

10. Old Master PaintingRe-interpretation
Usingthe "Grid"method,studentsenlargeandcopyincharcoal a selectedworkfromthe cannonof art history.
Creative "interpretations"are encouragedtoupdate the compositioninsome wayandtoexplore contentand
meaningwithinanartwork.

11. Surrealismand Automatism
Usingsurrealistde-collage andfrottage techniques,studentscreate randomlygeneratedexpressionisticworks
inpen,ink,and charcoal.Additional consciousadditionsandsubtractionsare made inordertocreate fantasy
landscapes/compositionsbasedonthe flow of unconsciousideasandthe imagination.

Workingtogether,the entire classenlarges2-3squaresof a large mural style reproductionof anartwork.The
finishedpiece isassembledusingagridmethodandthe entire compositionbecomesvisible.

Final Course Grade Appeal
The evaluation of academic work is the responsibility of the faculty member/instructor. The method for assigningthefinal course
grade is established by the faculty member/instructor. Per Board Rule 6Hx-18-3.191, faculty/instructorsshall communicatethe
gradingpolicy of the courseto their students in writing.If this policy changes duringthe term, students should be notified of any
changes in writing. The method to determine final coursegrades mustbe given to students in a coursesyllabusatthe beginningof

Mid-Term Grade Reporting
Within one week after the closeof the mid-term gradingperiod,mid-term grades will be made availableto all students for each

Class Information COURSE DESCRIPTION Thisisanintroductoryclassinthe fundamentalsof drawing. The studentwill beexploringtraditionalandexperimental methodsindrawing.There isstrongemphasisonfoundationskillssuchasform,value,compositionandperspective. Charcoal Value Studies Switchingtocharcoal,studentsproduce several "value"scaleswitheachtype of material inordertomasterthe blendingtechniquesandtobecome familiarwiththe propertiesof eachtype of charcoal.Additionallystudents produce an 11 square scale of value fromwhite toblack as graduallyandconvincinglyaspossible.
