Student Work Experience Programme
Terms & Conditions
(Revised for use in 2011)
Introduction & Pre-Requisites
a) The student Work Experience Programme (WEP) offers Raffles Girls‟ School (RGS) students the
opportunity to be attached to various public and private sector organizations to experience working life,
interact with professionals and learn about the requirements of different vocations.
b) The WEP is a programme with exacting ethical and professional standards.
c) Application for the WEP is opened to all current Secondary 3 and Secondary 4 students of RGS.
d) Application for the WEP does not constitute acceptance into the programme; applicants will be subject to
assessment of suitability for WEP from the point of application up to the point of notification of acceptance
or rejection.
e) Students will be assessed for suitability based on (but not limited to) the following factors:
i. Ability to read, comprehend and follow instructions
ii. Ability to adhere to deadlines
iii. Honesty, manners and courtesy
iv. Conduct and discipline
v. Physical and emotional well-being
vi. Initiative in communication
vii. Motivation and commitment
f) Applicants are required to attend a WEP Preparatory Session as part of the assessment of suitability. Upon
completion of the WEP, it is the student‟s responsibility to ensure that the Organisation where she has done
her WEP fills out an Organisational Appraisal form upon completion of her WEP. No certificate will be
issued if the Student Evaluation Form and Organisational Appraisal Form is not completed and submitted.
Application & Attachment Periods
g) Attachments will be arranged during the mid-year (May-June) and year-end (November-December) school
holidays. Depending on the date of acceptance into the programme, a Secondary 3/4 student will have a
maximum of 4 periods where she can sign-up for attachments i.e. mid-year and year-end.
h) There are 2 application months for WEP, March and August each year. Students who apply in March will be
informed of their acceptance or rejection by end of April the same year. Students who apply in August will
be informed of their acceptance or rejection by end of September the same year.
i) An accepted student need not submit additional applications to sign-up for attachments in forthcoming or
subsequent school holidays. They just have to sign up for the job placement they wish when there are
openings. A rejected student can re-submit an application in subsequent application months.
Placement of Student
j) An accepted student can sign-up for any and as many attachment opportunities that they can commit to
subject to the availability to sign-up for attachments on behalf of a student.
k) A student is only allowed to sign up for her personal attachments and not on behalf of others. No other party
is permitted to sign-up for attachments on behalf of a student.
l) Attachment opportunities vary from a few days to several weeks. Working hours vary from common office
hours to shift work and some may extend into the night, weekends and public holidays. An allowance may
or may not be provided at the discretion of the accepting organization. Students may also be required to put
on company uniforms (provided) or be in specified office attire (not provided) while on duty.
m) The onus is on the student and her respective parent / legal guardian to ascertain that they / their daughter
or ward is able to fully commit to the duration, location, tasks, working hours and other requirements of any

2. attachment before signing-up for it as penalties will be imposed for rejecting, not turning up for, or not
completing (unless on medical or compassionate grounds) a confirmed placement which they signed-up for.
n) The accepting organization reserves the right to cancel an attachment, change the duration, location(s) and
/ or amend the working hours. Should any of the above circumstances happen prior to or during the said
attachment, a student with a confirmed placement prior to the changes being communicated may withdraw
from the revised attachment without penalties.
o) Participation in order school events e.g. CCA is not an excuse from prior commitment to WEP attachment(s);
vice versa WEP attachment(s) is / are not an excuse from prior commitment to other school events.
Request for absence from other school events to undergo WEP attachment(s) is to be sought by the
student herself and approval is at the discretion of the relevant officer or teacher-in-charge.
p) No leave or time-off will be granted to students on attachment except for medical reasons or on
compassionate grounds (documentary proof need to be provided). Requests for leave or time-off based on
participation in other school / personal activities, examinations, family holidays etc. will not be entertained
but will follow due process specified under “Rejection, Termination & Penalties” below.
q) Except on medical or compassionate grounds, no student, her parent, relative, guardian, friend or
classmate is permitted to negotiate the terms of the student‟s attachment with the school or accepting
organization once the attachment details and/or placement have been confirmed unless the negotiation is
initiated by the school or accepting organization. Negotiation initiated by the student, her parent, relative,
guardian, friend or classmate (unless the party is an authorized programme representative of the accepting
organization) will not be entertained but will follow due process specified under “Rejection, Termination &
Penalties” below.
Self-Arranged Attachments
r) Students who wish to seek and secure attachments on their own or through their own sources / contacts
must apply to be accepted into the WEP if they wish to receive official school support in their quest.
s) Students who seek self-arranged attachments without going through the WEP do so in their own personal
capacity. The school will not provide any support in the form of certification, documentation and / or other
services.
t) A student who intends to seek and secure a self-arranged attachment, and who applies to and gets
accepted into the WEP, is also eligible to sign-up for school-arranged ones; vice versa an accepted student
who intends to sign-up for school-arranged attachments can also seek and secure attachments on their own
with support from the school.
u) Accepted students going on self-arranged attachments must provide the school with the following
information of their intended attachment at least 10 working days (Monday to Friday) prior to its
commencement for review and approval:

v) Failure to provide the above information at least 10 days prior to the commencement of the attachment will
render the attachment to be considered as one which is done in the student‟s personal capacity and will not
be entitled to official school support.
w) Accepted students on self-arranged attachments are subject to the same Terms & Conditions specified
herein with the exception that their self-arranged attachments need not fall within the mid-year and year-end
school holidays but must end by 31 December in their Secondary 4 year.
Rejection, Termination & Penalties
x) Incomplete applications will be rejected but allowed to be re-submitted.
y) Students assessed to be not suitable for the programme will be rejected but can re-submit their application
when they are confident to have addressed any deficiencies identified.

3. z) Students who are found to be unsuitable for the WEP after being accepted into the programme may be
rejected from the programme or have their case kept-in-view depending on the factor(s) of unsuitability.
Accepted students who are rejected can re-submit their application when they are confident to have
addressed any deficiencies identified.
aa) Accepted students who sign-up for but reject, do not turn up for, or do not complete a confirmed
replacement for any reason other than on medical or compassionate grounds (documentary proof to be
submitted) will be terminated from the WEP and barred from participating in it in future. A letter of
termination of WEP will be sent to the student through her parent / legal guardian. In addition, a report will
be submitted to her Form Teacher for his / her serious consideration when preparing the student‟s end-of-
year report and testimonial.
bb) Students on attachments who are unable to turn up for their attachment(s) due to medical or compassionate
reasons must, at the earliest possible time, inform her workplace supervisor (if assigned) and the RGS Pupil
Development Executive of her absence from the workplace. Documentary proof e.g. original Medical
Certificate, copy of Death Certificate needs to be provided to the workplace supervisor upon resumption of
duty or as per instructed by the RGS Pupil Development Executive.
cc) No penalties will be imposed should an accepted student decides not to sign-up for any school-arranged
attachment and / or seek any self-arranged attachment.
dd) Students on attachments are required to abide by all lawful and legal instructions, rules and regulations as
communicated by the accepting organization and / or the student‟s workplace supervisor. The accepting
organization reserves the right to terminate the attachment of the student should she flout the organization‟s
rules and regulations and / or demonstrates insubordination.
ee) WEP attachments are considered official school hours and students will be subject to the same school
disciplinary proceedings for offences like (but not limited to) tardiness, absenteeism, dishonesty, rudeness,
wilful non-conformance to specified dress-code and other misdemeanor committed at the place of
attachment.
ff) In addition to being subject to standard school disciplinary proceedings, any student found guilty of such
offences will be immediately terminated from the WEP and barred from participating in it in the future. A
letter of termination of WEP will be sent to the student through her parent / legal guardian. In addition, a
report will be submitted to her Form Teacher for his / her critical consideration when preparing the student‟s
end-of-year report and testimonial.
Reward & Incentives
gg) A student who completes an attachment satisfactorily or better (as assessed by the school and accepting
organization) and who is not terminated from the WEP will receive a certificate of completion for that
attachment in Sec 4 (Term 4) or the following year when they come back to collect their „O‟ Level Chinese
results. Besides having the opportunity to experience working life and understand the requirements of
vocations, the stringent application, selection, assessment and completion criterion of the WEP serves as a
validation of the student‟s character, maturity and employability skills.
hh) The certificates of completion are useful as supporting documents for application to educational institutions,
application for internships in future, and to be considered by employers as working experience.
ii) In addition, a summary of an accepted student‟s completed attachments will be sent to her Form Teacher
during Sec 4 (Term 4) for her Form Teacher‟s favourable consideration when preparing the student‟s end-
of-year report and testimonial.
