Volunteer groups require different leadership approaches than traditional organizations. Leaders must focus on communication, vision, and addressing fears rather than salary, hiring, or decision-making structures. Effective volunteer leadership also relies on giving volunteers a sense of purpose through community involvement and teaching roles while minimizing favoritism, poor communication, and lack of organization. Leaders are advised to spend time addressing concerns and fears in order to encourage productivity rather than trying to manage ineffective behaviors.

Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.
13. Brené Brown - Dare to lead
Leaders must spend a reasonable amount of time
attending to fears and feelings,
or squander an unreasonable amount of time trying to
manage ineffective and unproductive behaviour.

Leading a group of leaders
First started a volunteer group about 20 years ago - More powerful together
Learning, Developing and Coaching
Consensus is that things are different.
But why is that and what could it be about?
Did a survey… THANK YOU
What does that leave for motivation?
Show of hands for 4 / 5 / 6
Giving back - you’ve already seen this effect
Vision and communication - two things on the door already!
Yesterday - a Goal without a plan is just a dream
Knowing WHY means less “should we do this” and more “is this getting us towards our goal”
In Salesforce there is…
Vision - Values - Methods - Obstacles - Measures
Write your own V2 me and throw it!
Tell me what you do without using your role title
Then how can we grow? We need to ask awkward question…
Good news: 1) Not applicable means quite a few people said there was nothing they didn’t like
Good news: 2) We’ve now got things to work on
Bad news: These are the starting points for conversations yet to happen
Starting points:
Transparency in decision making and open recognition
Process - see next talk
Lack of processes & accountability
Single point of failure
Candid conversations - come to later
Modified from Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Successful People
My concerns = head v brick wall
I control my own behaviour - based on my attitude
My behaviour influences others’s attitude and helps shapes their behaviour
Sometimes unintended consequences
Saying the team needs to communicate better is like saying the business needs to make more money. It is too general to be useful.
Communicate with purpose.

Avoid paralysis by committee - “Let me know if you object by date” v “let me know if this is OK - I’ll be going ahead”
Boundaries:
£10 autonomous
£100 presumed yes
£100 majority vote
Providing feedback - how are we working?
How many of you assumed that this refers to you giving feedback?
In order to be brave you need to be vulnerable
Vulnerable to hear things you might not like
TIP: give positive, reinforcing feedback - don’t stop at “You’re Great” also add “Because…”
