1. Functions/Inequalities
The height (h) of a cliff diver above the water t seconds after he jumps modeled by the
equation→ h = -16t2 + 72. What is the height above the water of a cliff diver at 1.5 seconds
after he jumps?
h = -16t2 + 72
h = -16 ·1.52 + 72 (plug in 1.5 for t and multiply -16 x 1.5. Square/raise the product to the
second power or multiply the product times itself, the rule of thumb for exponents)
h = -242 + 72 (multiply -24 times itself, -24 x -24, not -24 x 2. Add the product to 72)
h = 576 + 72
h = 648
*Note: Multiplying two negatives produces a positive
A meteorologist sends a moisture probe rocket into a cloud layer. The height (h) the rocket will
reach after t seconds is modeled by the equation h = -16t2 + 212t + 2. What will be the height of
the rocket after 0.5 seconds?
h = -16t2 + 212t + 2
h = -16 · 0.52 + 212 · 0.5 + 2 (plug in 0.5 for t and multiply -16 x 0.5. Square/raise the product to
the second power or multiply the product times itself)
h = -82 + 106 + 2 (multiply -8 times itself, -8 x -8, not -8x2)
h = 64 + 106 + 2
h = 172
What is the value of the function f(x) = x2 - 4x + 6 when x = -5?
f(x) = -52 – 4 · -5 + 6
f(x) = 25 – -20 + 6
f(x) = 51
2. The function f(x) = 39x represents the number of jumping jacks j(x) you can do in x minutes.
How many jumping jacks can you do in 5 minutes?
f(x) = 39x
f(x) = 39·5
f(x) = 195
The function b(n) = 6n represents the number of light bulbs b(n) that are needed for n
chandeliers. How many light bulbs are needed for 15 chandeliers?
b(n) = 6n
b(n) = 6·15
b(n) = 90
