Compound Sentences
 What is a sentence?
Question
 A sentence is a group of words that tell us
about someone or something.
 It may also ask about someone or
something.
Answer
 start with a capital
 end with punctuation (. ? ! )
 have a subject
 have a verb
 form a complete thought
Remember!
A sentence must:
 So, what is a compound sentence?
Question
Compound sentences are sentences
composed of two independent clauses
connected to one another with
a coordinating conjunction.
Compound sentences
Note: “independent clause” is another word
for a sentence.
 Do you know the FANBOYS?
 What do they do?
Question
The FANBOYS are called “coordinating”
conjunctions because they connect words,
phrases and independent clauses.
Let’s study this chart
Conjunction Meaning example
For Show cause You should wear a jacket, for it’s very cold
outside
And Provides more
information
I usually eat breakfast, and I usually eat
supper.
Nor Show a double negative I don’t eat breakfast, nor do I eat lunch.
But Shows contrast I like apples, but my brother hates them!
Or Demonstrates an option Would you like coffee, or would you like
tea?
Yet Despite something He studied very hard, yet he failed the
exam.
So Shows effect (result) I woke up very late, so I missed the bus.
Now let’s study some compound
sentences ….
Example 1:
I like tea. She likes coffee
I like tea, but she likes coffee
Example 2:
The children don’t like oatmeal. They
don’t like strawberries.
The children don’t like oatmeal, nor do
they like strawberries.
Example 3:
.Jon had spaghetti for lunch. He had
ice cream for desert.
Jon had spaghetti for lunch, and he
had ice cream for desert.
Time to practice!
Change the following pairs of simple
sentences into 1 compound sentence.
1.
I have to study for my math test. I
have to visit my dentist next week.
I have to study for my math test, and I
have to visit my dentist next week.
2.
James hates spinach. His sister really
likes it.
James hates spinach, but his sister
really likes it.
3.
He ran 10 miles. He wasn’t tired.
He ran 10 miles, yet / but he wasn’t
tired.
4.
I think you’d enjoy the party, but you
can stay home if you’d like.
I think you’d enjoy the party. You can
stay home if you’d like.
5.
We should stay home. The weather
report says we are going to have a
storm.
We should stay home, for the weather
report says we are going to have a
storm.
6.
Jackie is not hungry now. She had a
large breakfast.
Jackie is not hungry now, for she had
a large breakfast.
7.
You should fix his window. You broke
it.
You should fix his window, since you
broke it.
8.
Your children don’t like cartoons. Your
children don’t like video games.
Your children don’t like cartoons, nor
do they like video games.
9.
Do you want toast? Do you want a
tortilla?
Do you want toast, or do you want a
tortilla?
10.
My car was out of gas. I took the bus
to work.
My car was out of gas, so I took the
bus to work.

Compound sentences

  • 2.  What is a sentence? Question
  • 3.  A sentence is a group of words that tell us about someone or something.  It may also ask about someone or something. Answer
  • 4.  start with a capital  end with punctuation (. ? ! )  have a subject  have a verb  form a complete thought Remember! A sentence must:
  • 5.  So, what is a compound sentence? Question
  • 6. Compound sentences are sentences composed of two independent clauses connected to one another with a coordinating conjunction. Compound sentences Note: “independent clause” is another word for a sentence.
  • 7.  Do you know the FANBOYS?  What do they do? Question The FANBOYS are called “coordinating” conjunctions because they connect words, phrases and independent clauses.
  • 8. Let’s study this chart Conjunction Meaning example For Show cause You should wear a jacket, for it’s very cold outside And Provides more information I usually eat breakfast, and I usually eat supper. Nor Show a double negative I don’t eat breakfast, nor do I eat lunch. But Shows contrast I like apples, but my brother hates them! Or Demonstrates an option Would you like coffee, or would you like tea? Yet Despite something He studied very hard, yet he failed the exam. So Shows effect (result) I woke up very late, so I missed the bus.
  • 9. Now let’s study some compound sentences ….
  • 10. Example 1: I like tea. She likes coffee I like tea, but she likes coffee
  • 11. Example 2: The children don’t like oatmeal. They don’t like strawberries. The children don’t like oatmeal, nor do they like strawberries.
  • 12. Example 3: .Jon had spaghetti for lunch. He had ice cream for desert. Jon had spaghetti for lunch, and he had ice cream for desert.
  • 13. Time to practice! Change the following pairs of simple sentences into 1 compound sentence.
  • 14. 1. I have to study for my math test. I have to visit my dentist next week. I have to study for my math test, and I have to visit my dentist next week.
  • 15. 2. James hates spinach. His sister really likes it. James hates spinach, but his sister really likes it.
  • 16. 3. He ran 10 miles. He wasn’t tired. He ran 10 miles, yet / but he wasn’t tired.
  • 17. 4. I think you’d enjoy the party, but you can stay home if you’d like. I think you’d enjoy the party. You can stay home if you’d like.
  • 18. 5. We should stay home. The weather report says we are going to have a storm. We should stay home, for the weather report says we are going to have a storm.
  • 19. 6. Jackie is not hungry now. She had a large breakfast. Jackie is not hungry now, for she had a large breakfast.
  • 20. 7. You should fix his window. You broke it. You should fix his window, since you broke it.
  • 21. 8. Your children don’t like cartoons. Your children don’t like video games. Your children don’t like cartoons, nor do they like video games.
  • 22. 9. Do you want toast? Do you want a tortilla? Do you want toast, or do you want a tortilla?
  • 23. 10. My car was out of gas. I took the bus to work. My car was out of gas, so I took the bus to work.
