Read the text and answer the questions:
Hi! I’m Sandra and I’ve been travelling all over the globe for the last 10 years.
These are my tips on how to pack light yet have all you need when you travel, so you can
avoid common mistakes and have the best travel experience possible.
You should have a clothes checklist and cross off items as you pack. If you go on a holiday
most of the time all you need is: a cap, a jacket, a tracksuit, a sweatshirt, swim shorts, a pair
of sneakers and jeans and T-shirts which you can mix and match.
You really should organize your bag properly. Roll or fold, it does not matter as long as you
make the most of the bag space. Rolling is great for T-shirts, swimsuits, and pajamas, but not
so good for bulky clothes, like sweaters.
Pack a couple of days in advance and then revise your choices.
Minimalize your toiletry kit.
Most people pack for the “what if I need it?”, but that is how you end up packing way too
many shoes, plus who wants to pay for an extra-heavy luggage? Speaking of which, it is your
responsibility to check the luggage allowance of your carrier.
I hope these tips will help you pack efficiently when travelling.
Don’t forget to travel with a smile!

Can you identify what those words have in common?
They are modal verbs. We can use modal verbs to give advice.
Note: We can add adverbs of intensity to make a stronger point.
You really should do this. (or you should really do this).
You absolutely should not do that. (or you should absolutely not do that)

Language Focus: Vocabulary for giving advice. Grammar
Your turn!
Use the modal verb “should” + “verb” to write two sentences giving
someone advice.
Note: With modal verbs we use the short infinitive form of the verb
(ex: infinitive: “to do” – short infinitive: “do”)
1.
2.
Add adverbs of intensity like “really” and “absolutely”.

Language Focus: Vocabulary for giving advice
Look at Sandra’s words highlighted below:
Pack a couple of days in advance and then revise your choices.
Minimalize your toiletry kit.
Can you identify what sort of verbs those are?
They are called imperative verbs (or imperatives). We can use imperatives to give advice.
We also use the short infinitive of the verb to create imperatives:
Ex: Do this! Don’t do that!

Notice how she uses INDIRECT statements or questions to give advice.
Sometimes we give advice in an indirect way by pointing to unwanted consequences, or to what worked for
us or others in a similar situation in the past, or just making general neutral remarks like “who wants this?”
This is a very polite and effective way to give advice without sounding that you do.
Ex: What worked for me is to pack my socks in the shoes.
I’ve seen people wearing multiple layers of clothing when travelling so they don’t have to pack them.

A final note: When you give advice make sure you mention why you are giving it
(especially when it is unsolicited). You do not want to come across as a “show off”.
Look at Sandra’s reasoning:
These are my tips on how to pack light yet have all you need when you to travel, so you can avoid common
mistakes and have the best travel experience possible.
A neutral statement like that can put the other person at ease and they
will be more receptive to your advice.

Writing
Let’s Practice giving advice.
Write a note to a friend that often “cannot keep their eyes open”
because they work too much. Give them 3 pieces of advice how to
“have a second wind”. Use a modal verb, one imperative verb and
one indirect statement. Don’t forget to state why you are giving them
the advice.
