3. This is one of the biggest trend hits on
early Feb 2013. Suddenly, all kinds of
Harlem Shake dance version crass on
YouTube. The video usually only
about 30-45 seconds long, where it
starts out as one person dancing and
everyone not noticing, till about half
way and then everyone in the room
dances and shakes ‘harlem’ style
and masked to hide their shame.
This meme was established originally by
five teenagers from
Queensland, Australia registered on
YouTube as
TheSunnyCoastSkate, based off a
"Filthy Compilation" video by
YouTube user Filthy Frank.

In youth trend point of view, this act is consider to be ‘late adopters’ when
most youth now migrates to path
Actually this is a good start for president to communicate directly with
people but the content of the tweets is still too formal.

5. “Taking self-portraits has never
been easier!!!!”
Yup the tagline is pretty much
describe what is actually a
“Tongsis”.
Tongsis or ‘tongkat narsis’ is a
photography device that could
easily attached to your
camera or smart phone for
taking a ‘selfie’ picture of you
or your peers. Youth
nowadays couldn’t live
without selfie photo of them
eating, dating, hangout or
travelling. This tool is like a
miracle to them.
Babah Dito is the one who
brought the ‘Tongsis’ tool to
Indonesia when he attended a
photography event in Bangkok

6. There’s a difference between stickers and smileys.
Smileys are those cute little emoticons that we
have been using in our chats for ages. Smileys are
generally stock cartoons providing a set way of
expressing for e.g. icon smile depicts happiness
while :( depicts sadness and icon wink depicts
mischief. When you want to express more in your
posts and messages, they kind of fall short.
The idea of stickers, we can say is based upon smileys,
but that is where the connection ends. Unlike
smileys, stickers are not just stilly denotations of
your mood rather they communicate much more
than smileys can. They express much more.
It was amongst the first on the sticker scene and now
almost everybody has jumped in. Whether it be
apps like Line, WeChat, Path or even WhatsApp,
there are stickers out there for messaging. In fact,
many apps sell them.

7. According to wikipedia; a meme is "an
idea, behavior, or style that
spreads from person to person
within a culture. A meme acts as a
unit for carrying cultural ideas,
symbols, or practices that can be
transmitted from one mind to
another through writing, speech,
gestures, rituals, or other imitable
phenomena.
2013 is the year of Meme posting from
Kaskus, instagram, 9Gag and the
most popular place is Path.
Indonesian youth is really creative on
this stuff! Seriously I had a good
laugh seeing those meme photos
as a parody of brands, politician or
celebrity. The most popular memes
are the Khong Huan Meme and
Finding Neverland Meme.

8. The Arya Wiguna
“Demi Tuhan” and Vicky Prasetyo
unique language has the highest
buzz among YouTube videos.
But these videos are only “hit and
run” phenomenon. It happens
because one or two social
occurrences involving Indonesian
celebrities then it posted on
YouTube and it goes viral. Between
1 or 2 months, it was forgettable.
This manner shows that online video
in Indonesia is not engaging
enough especially to youth. They
consume more than they produce
the content.

9. This year, Urban fashion
industry filled with new
franchise fashion brand
such as H&M, Uniqlo,
Wakai etc.
Those brand outlets exist
in famous shopping malls
in Jakarta.
Youth now consider
fashion as the status
symbol rather than
gadgets. They feel
significant when they’re in
style with the latest
fashion trend

10. The latest election resulting the winner of Ridwan Kamil
and Bima Arya is a new trend of Youth & Politics.
“Insights gained through the mayor election in Bandung
and Bogor is that the young people are leaning toward
pragmatic politics where ideology are less prioritized.
We're back in new order nuance except without its
political repression.
To be a young leader you doesn’t necessarily expected to
have political affiliation or belief, you’re just expected
to have international
acknowledgment, modern worldview, and flair for change.
I might say that we are in the era of assimilating a local
Obama and Steve Job into the realm of politic”

11. It seems that BlackBerry’s days are numbered
and it won’t be long before the company is
nothing more than a memory.
The company known as RIM (Research in
Motion) became far too confident and
while it was sat bathing in its glory, other
major telecom companies were being far
more innovative such as Apple and
Samsung.
The fact that the BBM (blackberry messenger)
is now available for Android and iOS makes
the group of youth who use Blackberry
only for its BBM feature is now fully
abandon their BB phone.

12. We could see now in strategic
hangout places like Kemang
or Senopati, a stylist
barbershop for Men. Unlike
the common barbershop, this
new kind of barbershop has a
‘cool’ interior design with
‘cool’ stylist.
This barbershop trend is
parallel with the emerge of
‘grooming for boys’ trend.
The famous hairstyle called
‘jarhead’ or ‘slicked back hair’
very common for male youth.
Their inspiration come from
Football player and
Hollywood actors.

13. Late 2013, we heard of these lingo / terms:
‘cabe-cabean’ for female youth and ‘terongterongan’ for male youth (both are junior &
high school students segment), means a
group of teenagers who like to hangout at
night, mostly related with negative activity.
These group has some common criteria
given by the society; always updating their
status (bbm, fb, twitter), occupied with
relationship / dating, use teeth braces (For
girls), often seen in motorcycle street race
It is a sad situation for Indonesian Youth
generation. Many factors cause this
phenomenon; borderless media, lack of
controlling function from parents and peer
pressure.
