2. What is the Respiratory System? The Respiratory system is the system of organs that enables you to breathe. When you breathe in, your diaphragm contracts making your ribs and the muscles in between them also contract. Your chest rises. Then, as your diaphragm relaxes your chest drops.
3. Inside the Respiratory System The Mouth and Nose This is where the air enters. When the air travels through your nose it is filtered Trachea This is the pipe in which air travels in and out. Bronchi The Bronchi branch of from the trachea. These are the two pipes that start your lung
4. Lungs Your lungs are fleshy sponge like air sacs. Lungs are what in and deflate. Bronchiole The bronchiole are even smaller than bronchi. These branch off into many branches. Alveoli These are the many small air sacs that have such a small membrane that the oxygen can pass through them. Diaphragm The diaphragm is the muscle which controls your breathing.
5. How does the respiratory System work? When you inhale the air goes through your mouth or nose into your trachea. Inside the trachea there is a flap of skin called the epiglottis. This stops the air from going into your stomach. The flows through your trachea down into the bronchi. While this happens your diaphragm contracts. Also your rib cage rises. The air gets split into many different bronchiole. These then bring the air into the alveoli. The alveoli are lined with many capillaries. The oxygen from you breath swaps with the the carbon dioxide from the blood. The carbon dioxide in your lungs now is exhaled.

7. How does Your respiratory Work, Exhale As you exhale your diaphragm relaxes. This makes you lungs smaller and the carbon dioxide moves out from the alveoli, through the bronchiole, out to the bronchi, through the trachea, out your mouth or nose. When this is done you repeat the process.
