Timeline
2007
Bre Pettis meets with Zach, who is making
RepRap in NYCResistor
Make McWire RepStrap with Zach and other
crew(Marius, Phillip, and Red) by sacrificing their
lives
Fail to even print out swizzle stick in Roboexotica
and receive „lime award‟
Timeline
2008
The machine Bre left in Vienna was fixed by Maruis
and Phillip, and the machine succeeds in printing out
shot glass this time
Creates a clubhouse starting with 9 members, and
buys a laser cutter together
Starts Thingiverse with Zach, which people can share
design online
Zach gets Darwin(prototype of RepRap) and tries to
fix it
After 25th Chaos Communication Congress, Bre and
Zach decides to start up a company
Timeline
2009
The two plus a veteran engineer Adam starts up
a company called MakerBot Industries, which is
a company that makes 3D printers and sells it.
Showed 3D printer to the world 1st time in SXSW
festival; all of them were sold
People who bought MakerBot starts to make
things, sharing their ideas via Thingiverse
Makerbot CupcakeCNC
Thingiverse
Timeline
2010
Constantly updating software and hardware for
Makerbot, the company makes Thing-O-
Matic, which is a 3D printer with new way of
moving the printing bed
2011
There are 2500 Makerbot around the world and
everyone has not stopped their hand to “make”
Timeline
What they are trying to
make: users
Users of Makerbot and Thingiverse are highly-
motivated, active, and not afraid to confront
problems which comes along with new
technology
They are not just trying to make products which
solves their everyday problem, but they are also
willing to commit to the whole community, which
includes making/fixing 3D printer by themselves
What they are trying to
make:
MakerBot IndustriesTheir first and constant goal is to make an
„affordable‟ 3D printer; they made a 3D printer
with a restriction (but does not restrict their mind
and ideas) of tools (laser cutter, hand, and off-
the-shelf parts)
Along with Thingiverse, they made Makerbot an
open source―they wanted 3D Printer to truly
become users‟
The whole environment they created is for users
to not just be a bystander; 3D printer is not a
black box and Thingiverse is not a museum
Example of community
updating each other
$25 Mouse Trap (one day, eight designs)
Charles Pax (modified DXF file so that
electronics can fit in the machine, also made
MakerBot Automated Build Platform)
Skimbai created a modular cathedral under a
restriction of maximum print size being
100x100x120
Of course, MakerBot Industries are working to
update software and hardware
