What are communication networks
and why are they important?
How things work at Google
• Google is a very open organisation and values
opinions and views of each and every employee.
• They treat employees not as white collared workers
but as their think-tank. This creates challenges for an
organisation of this mammoth size.
• Being an IT enabled company and an IT enabler,
Google uses ultra-modern ways to communicate in
the organisation.
Upward Communication at Google
• Any employee can directly talk to the ultimate boss
too.
• Moreover the employees are free to put their
viewpoints or help innovate new ideas.
• Google is trying to eliminate all "top-downness from
decision making.“
• Google’s founders and top executives make
themselves available in person once a week to
interact with employees at Google HQ.

While reading online we found
an article, where using modern
tools of communication has
made a 20,000 employee strong
organisation compete with
Apple Inc. (72,000 employee
strong) and exceed
expectations.
Downward Communication at Google
• Employees here work 24x7. Even
when at home, they receive work
related e-mails from superiors.
Many times they even do video
conferencing to discuss about the
work.
• Google is paperless. Hence, all the
communication takes place over
emails and texts.
• One Google VP replaced his
newsletter e-mail with a three-
minute YouTube Video.
Diagonal Communication at Google
• The diagonal communication takes place through
the same networks as does Upward and Downward
communication.
• Use of electronic mediums are a prerequisite for
Google.
• It is required by the company so that they can work
towards achieving the goals effectively and
efficiently.
You know, they have a Employee
Grievance Officer who handles the
grievances of all they employees at
Google.
Vertical Communication at Google
• The company emphasises ‘teamwork’. For working
as an effective team they use its ’shared document
technology’.
• Moreover they work together across product lines
to deliver an unparalleled experience.
• Best example is Android. All the google products
have converged into Android beautifully. This was
made possible only by fast and accurate
communication networks.
