This is the first Presidential election where social media reflects and affects the outcome for both sides. Political candidates have brands, just like companies do. They’re influenced by many of the same market forces, and social media is one of those forces. The team at Portent put together this evaluation of the Romney and Obama presidential campaigns based on Facebook data collected since April 2012. Our analysis shows problems for both sides: A universe problem for Gov. Romney, and an agility problem for Pres. Obama. Note: We will update this report as the election progresses. Please subscribe to our blog at http://www.portent.com/blog if you'd like to keep track.

In an election year, the rights of the Canadian public to access political information at both a local and national level rise to the fore. Unfortunately, access to information is currently contested, as emerging technologies are challenged for their ability to take the place of declining local newspapers and television broadcasters. This project examines whether Twitter is effective at providing locally-relevant political information during election time. Specifically it looks at whether small communities underserved by traditional media can use Twitter to access political information that is relevant to them, or if in contrast, the information available through Twitter is only relevant on a national level.

This study examined organizational members‘ perceptions of and responses to workplace romance. In this 2 x 4 experimental design, 212 working adults reported their beliefs and communication-related responses to a hypothetical male or female co-worker dating an organizational peer, superior, subordinate, or individual unaffiliated with the organization. Employees perceived peers dating superiors to be more driven by job motives, less driven by love motives, and more likely to receive unfair advantages due to their romance than peers dating individuals of other status types. Employees also reported a higher likelihood of engaging in information manipulation with and reported less trust in peers dating superiors than peers with romantic partners of other status types. Finally, job and love motives, perceptions of peers enjoying unfair advantages due to their romance, and peer trust mediated the relationships between the status of the organizational peer‘s partner and co-workers‘ self-disclosure and deception with the peer.

A Democracy Corps/Campaign for America's Future survey examines the top economic priorities of American voters, the extent to which they are rejecting the economic priorities of conservatives and offers insight into what Democrats will have to do in order to regain the support of the public. On Election Day of 2014, Republicans won a big victory. And it really was a “Wave” victory, bigger than 2010 in a lot of important ways despite the fact that you'd never know it listening to the mainstream media. Just because it was more or less expected doesn't make it less of a major thrashing than 2010 was. One of the reasons it was so big and so important is that the GOP didn't win the same way everywhere. In 2010 the pattern was pretty consistent across the country. In 2014 Republicans again won big, but it's a little more complicated how. And that's important as we look toward 2016 and beyond. Obama thinks the election wasn't about him. Some political scientists are already trying to make hand-waving arguments that Republicans didn't win groups that exit polls show they won. So, what should Republicans take from the 2014 Election? Here are five important lessons: 1) Obama's policies were on the ballot, as he said. But to dismiss 2014 as only about Obama is both to diminish the massive size of the Republican victory and to miss the important lessons of the election. This was a complete rejection of Democrats and liberal policies. 2) The return of working class whites (aka, Reagan Democrats, Angry White Males, Tea Party Voters) to the polls proves that 2010 was not a fluke and teaches Republicans an important lesson for 2016: The GOP must have a nominee, and candidates up and down the ballot, who can connect with this populist voting block. 3) Despite their vaunted turnout technology, Democrats didn't fully get the Obama coalition to the polls. This raises real questions about the replicability of African American turnout without Obama at the top of the ticket. Where Democrats did get other parts of their coalition out, the messaging required likely cost them more votes elsewhere than it earned them in turnout (e.g., Udall in Colorado). 4) The GOP has messages and candidates who can win in a diverse array of states. The message of a David Perdue in Georgia, a Greg Abbott in Texas, and a Larry Hogan in Maryland shared some basic similarities. But they were also each somewhat unique to the candidate and situation. 5) Outside of African Americans (persuading whom is going to be the work of many campaigns) 2014 proved that Republicans can win Asians nationally and can come very close to splitting Hispanics in a race with the right message and campaign. The myth of Republicans as the white party is just that: a myth. Toward that point, the GOP must continue a robust campaign toward all demographic groups.
