Leveraging the dmp tool
1. Leveraging the DMP Tool
for Research Data Management
What is the DMP Tool,
why use it,
and how?

2. Brief Overview of the DMP Tool
• http://DMPtool.org
• Meetings began January 2011 in response to increasing requirements
• 8 initial partners (see below) provided in-kind leg work
• Based in the University of California Curation Center then & now
• v1 released October 2011
• v2 released May 2014
• Currently 176 partners and growing
3. The DMP Tool…
Centralizes the current data
management requirements of major
research funding agencies
Provides a CMS-like experience for
writing/updating/collaborating on a
data management plan
Supports data management planning
through templates, examples,
information resources, and more
Provides an open RESTful API so
software developers can create web
services from DMP Tool data
4. The DMP Tool does not…
store,
share,
review,
access, etc., research data
5. Data management plan?
• a comprehensive plan of how research data will be managed
throughout the lifecycle of the research project.
• often submitted as part of grant application
• includes a description of how data will be shared (or why it can’t)
• typically 2-3 pages
6. What goes into a data management plan?
Varies from project to project and funder to funder.
Funders require less info than data management best practices.
In general DMPs describe:
• the type(s) of data to be generated
• relevant data and metadata standards
• policies for access, sharing, and use
• archiving and preservation
7. Advantages of data management planning
• Good science (reproducible results)
• Transparency and accountability
• Gain competitive edge in grant competition
• Increase the impact of scholarship by making data citable and
reusable
• Helps to minimize data loss, be more efficient
• Helps with the complexity of data (infrastructure, policy, standards,
practices, technology, etc.)
• Required by funder/institution/publisher
9. “The OSTP hereby directs each Federal agency [...] to develop a
plan to support increased public access to the results of research
funded by the Federal Government.”
