A New Framework For Managing Today's Employees
The employer-employee relationship is broken. Managers face a seemingly impossible
dilemma: You can’t afford to offer lifetime employment. But you can’t build a lasting,
innovative business when everyone acts like a free agent.
The solution: Stop thinking of employees as family or free agents, and start thinking of
them as allies on a tour of duty.
Co-authored by Reid Hoffman, founder/chairman of LinkedIn, The Alliance teaches
managers how to recruit, manage, and retain the entrepreneurial employees your
business needs to succeed in the networked age.

How we like to portray the employer-employee relationship
How the relationship actually works for most people.
The employee relationship is broken. See, for much of the 20th century, as managers, we thought of our companies like families. We offered lifetime employment. We prized loyalty. And with this loyalty came trust, continuity. People stuck around.
And this was an approach that worked in an era of stability.
But the world is changing. Globailization. Technology. Companies have to be more adaptable, have a workforce that has the latest skills. And so even though some CEOs STILL sometimes talk about “families,” they don’t really mean it.
This is a photo of my family. That’s me in bow tie. I don’t know about you, but every time my brother annoys me, I’m not able to “fire him.”
No, companies aren’t families anymore. They can’t afford to be.
In reponse, companies have begun treating their employees like merceneries. Jack Welch said in the 90’s that loyalty is gone – if you want loyalty, get a dog. At GE we have one day contracts. This allows companies maximum flexibility to hire and fire at will to make sure all employees have the latest skills.
Quite understandably, in response, your best people feel ok leaving the company on a moment’s notice. Loyalty is gone.

Lifetime family – hug onself – body language
Lissez faire – kidn of crazy and loose
Alliance body language: strong down the middle
The solution is to stop thinking of employees as family or one-day contract mercenaries, and start thinking of them as allies.
So, imagine it’s the first day…
Let’s go back to the first day on the job.
Same day - different movie.
Imagine it’s day 1 again - what do you think you’d want to?
We have an alliance. We want to encourage your entrepreneurial instincts.
How would you feel about working at that kind of company?
That can be YOUR company.
“The best part of the story. I’m not your HR director - you are.”
