Muhammad s.a.w.) a beautiful pattern (of conduct) for
anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day, and who
engages much in the praise of Allah. “

(When) ‘A-isha r.a. was asked as to the Prophet’s
s.a.a.w. disposition (akhlaq) she replied:
“(His nature or disposition) is the Qur’an”.

O men! Behold, We have created you all out
of a male and a female, and have made you
into nations and tribes, so that you might
come to know one another. Verily, the noblest
of you in the sight of Allah is the one who is
most deeply conscious of Him (TAQWA).

“Whomsoever that Allah wishes for him goodness, He will
make him a FAQIH (learned) in matters of the
religion(Deen); and for everything there is a pillar, and the
pillar of this religion is AL-FIQH – (the profound
understanding of the Deen); a learned scholar (of the Deen)
is more difficult upon satan than a thousand worshippers.”

“When Allah intends for a community goodness, He makes of
their leaders those who are intelligent (with forbearance);
and judgement (rulings) are made amongst them by those
who are truly learned (and just scholars); and He places
wealth in the hands of those who are charitable (and kind).
And when Allah intends for a community bad, He makes of
their leaders those who are foolish (uncouth); and judgement
(rulings) are made amongst them by those who are ignorant
(reckless); and He places wealth in the hands of those who
are miserly (selfish).”

"Indeed the scholars are the inheritors of the Prophets, but if they fall
into covetousness and greed, who shall be taken as leaders? The
merchants and businessmen are the trustees of Allah, so if they are
treacherous, who can be trusted? The warriors are the guests of Allah
so if they become extreme (or take spoils without right), with whom can
we defeat the enemies? The righteous and ascetic ones are the kings of
the earth but if they become insincere (i.e. have riya’), who shall be
followed? The governors/rulers are the shepherds (protectors) of the
people, but if the shepherd becomes a wolf, who shall protect the
flock?"

attained to faith”, they will be left to themselves, and will
not be put to a test? Yea, indeed, We did test those who
lived before them; and so, [too, shall be tested the people
now living: and] most certainly will Allah mark out those
who prove themselves true (SwODAQUU), and most
certainly will He mark out those who are lying (KAADZIBEEN).”
(Qur’an: Ankabut: 29: 2-3)

“Verily, Allah loves [only] those who fight in His cause in [solid] ranks,
as though they were a building firm and compact.”

 ADAB in ranks and maintaining unity amongst Muslims are
very important priority in our striving to gain Allah’s pleasure
and acceptance.

draw apart from one another. And remember the blessings which
Allah has bestowed upon you: how, when you were enemies, He
brought your hearts together, so that through His blessing you
became brethren; and [how, when] you were on the brink of a
fiery abyss. He saved you from it. In this way Allah makes clear His
messages unto you, so that you might find guidance.”

“Now when Moses spoke to his people, [it was this same
truth that he had in mind:] "O my people! Why do you
cause me grief, the while you know that I am a
messenger of Allah sent unto you?" And so, when they
swerved from the right way, Allah let their hearts swerve
from the truth: for Allah does not bestow His guidance
upon iniquitous folk (FAA-SIQEEN).”
(Qur’an: Saff: 61: 5)

 We may be unaware that our state (AHWAL) may in fact be
causing grief to our Prophet s.a.a.w. as alluded in this verse
regarding how the Bani Isra’iI had done towards Prophet Musa
a.s.
 What is important to note is – How they deviated :

“And so, when they swerved from the right way,
Allah let their hearts swerve from the truth”

“O YOU who have attained to faith! Do not put yourselves
forward in the presence of [what] Allah and His Messenger
[may have ordained], but remain conscious of [and fear] Allah:
for, verily, Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing!”
(Qur’an: Hujurat: 49: 1)

“... And know that Allah’s Messenger is among you: were he
to comply with your inclinations in each and every case, you
would be bound to come to harm [as a community].”

“O you who have believed, (be conscious of and) fear
Allah (TAQWA) and be with those who are true (in
word and deed - AS-SwO-DIQEEN).“

“those who listen [closely] to all that is said (FAS-TA-MI’), and
follow the best of it (FAT-TABI’): [for] it is they whom Allah has
graced with His guidance (HUDA), and it is they who are [truly]
endowed with insight (ULUL-ALBAB)!”

“And who could be better of speech than he who calls [his fellow-men]
unto Allah (DA-’AA -ILALLAAH), and does what is just and right (‘AMAL
SWOLIHAH), and says, “Verily, I am (MINAL-MUSLI-MEEN) of those
who have surrendered themselves to Allah”?”
(Qur’an: Fussilat: 41: 33)

“... Ask from those who possess the Message ( Ahlu-az-Zikr :
the remembrance) in matters which you do not know.“

“(Honour) My successors, may Allah s.w.t. be Merciful towards
them!.” He was asked: “Who are your successors O Messenger of
Allah?” And he said: “They are those who revive my Sunnah and
teaches them to the servants of Allah.”

“The best ones amongst you is the person who makes you
remember Allah when you look upon him; and whenever he
speaks it increases you your knowledge (of the Deen), and with
his deeds it inspires (motivates) you to strive for your
Hereafter.”

“Be in the company of the KUBARA’ -elders
(who are noble in Allah’s sight),
seek the answers from the ‘ULAMA - scholars,
and interact with the HUKAMA’ - wise.”

“An immoral man of learning is a great evil,
yet a greater evil is an ignoramus leading a ‘godly’ life.
Both are a great trial everywhere,
to whomever depends to them both,
in holding on to his religion”

REFLECTION:

We would indeed be afflicted with this Fitnah (trial). Only with appropriate
knowledge and irshaadah, and more importantly Taufiq wal-Hidaa-ya from
Allah SWT. would we be saved from its evil.

“Give yourself up to the study of jurisprudence (FIQH), for the
knowledge of jurisprudence is the best guide to piety and the
fear of Allah and it is the straightest path to the ultimate goal.”

REFLECTION:
“Fiqh” – literally means “profound understanding (of the Deen)” – ref:
al-Qur’an Surah Taubah : 9: 122, which later was used to refer to the
studies of Islamic jurisprudence.

“With all this, it is not desirable that all of the believers take
the field [in time of war]. From within every group in their
midst, some shall refrain from going forth to war, and shall
devote themselves [instead] to acquiring a deeper
knowledge of the Faith (LIYA-TAFAQ-QAH-HU FID-DEEN).
and [thus be able to] teach (LI-YUN-DZIRU) their homecoming brethren, so that these [too] might guard themselves
against evil.”
(Qur’an: Taubah: 9: 122)

“A learned FAQIH (scholar & teacher) is truly FAQIH, one who does not cause others to feel
despair from receiving the mercy of Allah (i.e. Not overly strict and too ‘harsh’); and neither
does he (give the impression by his behaviour, a guarantees as if ) anyone can avert or
withhold the wrath (punishment) of Allah, nor allows opportunity (by giving dispensation)
for anyone to disobey Allah (i.e. Not being inappropriately lax and too ‘nice’).

“And [this happened, too,] when Jesus, the son of Mary, said:
"O children of Israel! Behold, I am a messenger of Allah unto
you, [sent] to confirm the truth of whatever there still remains
of the Torah, and to give [you] the glad tiding of a messenger
who shall come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad." But
when he [whose coming Jesus had foretold] came unto them
with all evidence of the truth, they said: "This [alleged message
of his] is [nothing but] spellbinding eloquence!"
(Qur’an: Saff: 61: 6)

“And who could be more wicked than one who invents [such] a
lie about [a message from] Allah, seeing that he is [but] being
called to self-surrender unto Him (AL-ISLAM)? But Allah does
not bestow His guidance upon (ZOLIMEEN) evil-doing folk.”

Allah has willed to spread His light in all its fullness, however

you a bargain that will save you from grievous suffering
[in this world and in the life to come]? You are to believe
(IIMAN) in Allah and His Messenger, and to strive hard
(JIHAD) in Allah's cause with your possessions (AMWAL)
and your lives (ANFUS): this is for your own good - if you
but knew it!”

dearly love: (NASR) succour from Allah [in this world], and

“O YOU who have attained to faith! Be helpers [in the cause of Allah
(KUUNU ANSAARALLAH)- even as Jesus, the son of Mary, said unto
the white-garbed ones, "Who will be my helpers in Allah's cause?" whereupon the white-garbed [disciples] replied, "We shall be [thy]
helpers [in the cause] of Allah!" And so [it happened that] some of the
children of Israel came to believe [in the prophethood of Jesus],
whereas others denied the truth. But [now] We have given strength
against their foes unto those who have [truly] attained to faith: and
they have become the ones that shall prevail.”
(Qur’an: Saff: 61: 14)

 “Islam” (submission/obedience) is all about “doing” or
“being”. Although it begins by our having to acquire the
knowledge- ultimately the concern must be in our being able
to do and to become.

 There is a great difference between theoretical Muslim and
true Muslim; between Muslim who is good at talking about
Islam and a Muslim who concerns himself in being one.

 A “Muslim” by definition is one who practices. Unfortunately,
too much emphasis is given to the intellectualising Islam
instead of internalising and manifesting Islam in ourselves.

 Not that it is wrong to learn and study Islam intellectually, but
it is this obsession in some people which makes them neglect
the equally important “practicalising” of Islam that is
worrying.

 We preach Islam but forget to practice it ourselves.
 We already have too many seminars and forums; talks and
lectures; meetings after meetings; planning and concept
papers; future plans and visions; thinkers and policy-makers;
boardroom leaders with fancy titles and credentials - but all
these have distracted us from realising that though we can say
many good points about Islam, in terms of the practical
implementation of Islam in ourselves, it is glaringly absent.

 We relish at vocalising other people’s shortcomings, but is
cowardly defensive when it comes to our own shortcomings.
 We like to advise but is uncomfortable when being advised.
 It is no wonder that once a Sufi when asked, “What is Islam
and who are the Muslims?” remarked: “Islam is what is found
in the Books, and Muslims are all in the grave!”

Allah with all the consciousness that is due to Him, and
do not allow death to overtake you ere you have
surrendered yourselves unto Him (MUSLIMUN).”

 Alhamdulillah! Islamic resurgence is now in vogue in many
countries. The awareness that is shown amongst Muslims is
indeed encouraging. But the work of Islamization is far from
satisfactory.
 It has to be approached from all aspects- the individual, the
family, the society, the state, the whole of humanity, the
knowledge, the economic system, the political system etc- in
short; the micro and macro levels.

 From the historical perspective, Islam was established
following the pattern of moulding the individuals which
gradually branched outward to encompass every other sphere.
 In Islamization to re-establish the lost glory of Islam in the
present contemporary life (that is what Islamization is all
about), the priority component crucial for its success, is we the Muslims.

 We, the individual Muslims are the important building blocks,
the fundamental cells that can determine the health of the
body.
 How well have we Islamically developed?
 Instead of talking about an Islamic state, from the perspective
of ‘Ilmul-Ahklaq, every Muslim must be concerned about their
own state of Islam!

 Our own inner selves are urgently in need of Islamization!
 Our tongues need to be Islamised; our thoughts and
consciousness; our leisure and interests; our time and
productive years; our hearing and sight; our hands and feet;
our private parts and sense of modesty; our health and wealth;
our attitudes and behaviours etc.
 All these need to be seriously evaluated. Have they truly
submitted to Allah in Islam?

 The Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. was successful in educating and
nurturing the early Muslims who exudes every goodness. They,
that people of the generation termed as KHAY-RA UMMAH, were
one of the crucial factors (human resource,not merely the
MANHAJ) for the successes, workability and fruition of the Islamic
systems – civilization (TAMADDUN).
 Therefore, if we are only to concern ourselves with trying to
replicate that system (MANHAJ) without due consideration on
our own quality (as the resource – our SHAKSHIYAH and
AKHLAQ), then we are just building sand castles on sifting sand.

fact. Let us therefore be conscious about our whole selves; our
relationship with Allah and with all others.

AKHLAQ – (disposition) can be formed through practice or acquired through
habits.
Thus, inculcation of the proper attitude, adopting right discipline and exuding
the appropriate regard towards others in our relationship – guided by Prophetic
ways – is very important.
Thus is that the term ADAB, should be understood.
As AKHLAQ is the desired outcome, yet having and striving with ADAB at
all times, consistently is the means , nay the SUNNAH.
This is inherent in the way our traditional scholars nurture their students –
who were all people who understood its importance and thus were developed
with ADAB (without them needing any intellectual discourse).
Yet today, this knowledge (nay awareness even) of what ADAB is, has been
lost and requires elucidations .

AKHLAQ – (disposition) can be formed through practice or acquired through habits. Thus, inculcation of the proper attitude, adopting right discipline and exuding the appropriate regard towards others in our relationship – guided by Prophetic ways – is very important. Thus is that the term ADAB, should be understood. As AKHLAQ is the desired outcome, yet having and striving with ADAB at all times, consistently is the means , nay the SUNNAH. This is inherent in the way our traditional scholars nurture their students – who were all people who understood its importance and thus were developed with ADAB (without them needing any intellectual discourse). Yet today, this knowledge (nay awareness even) of what ADAB is, has been lost and requires elucidations .
