Richard Hamming gave a talk in 1986 about doing research as a student. Some of his key advice included thinking big but starting small, looking for differences rather than similarities, understanding your strengths and weaknesses, working hard while young, collaborating with others, and marketing your work. He also advised administrators to be friendly and collaborative, in case an Einstein comes to their institution, as computers still have yet to find their great thinkers like Galileo or Newton.
