City Council Elects New City Clerk; Aggressive
Campaign Against Illegal Fireworks
By Haleemon Anderson
The Lawndale City Council elected long-
time resident Rhonda Gorman Hofmann to a
two-year term as City Clerk by unanimous
vote Monday. The action, taken at the final
meeting of the fiscal year, fills the position
vacated by Bernadette Suarez, who assumed
the council seat of the late Larry Rudolph.
Hofmann and applicants Sirley Cuevas and
Henrietta Martinez were asked to introduce
themselves and answer questions from the
council. Nominations were called for and
Hofmann was nominated by her predecessor,
Suarez.
“I’m ecstatic,” Hofmann said after the
vote. “I was looking for three votes; I’m
happy with five.” She was sworn in with her
mother Doris at her side. Her father, Harold
E. Hofmann, was mayor from 1990 until his
passing in 2013. The Lawndale community
center is named in his honor.
The council also filled seats on the city’s
cable commission and senior advisory
committee. Mayor Robert Pullen-Mills noted
that all four applicants to the cable group
and nine of the 11 who applied to the senior
advisory are incumbents. All members were
unanimously approved for appointment to
two-year terms. These shared governance
committees provide recommendations to the
council. One seat on each remains unfilled.
In the public safety report, Lieutenant John
Hocking detailed an aggressive, pro-active
campaign against illegal fireworks. The
sheriff’s department, in collaboration with
Los Angeles County, intends to crack down
on illegal sale and usage through an elaborate
program of undercover buys, communication
and increased manpower.
“We will have 16 extra deputies on patrol,”
Hocking said. He said legal fireworks and
sales sites should clearly display the “safe
and sane” logo. He cautioned that this “no
tolerance” policy is being communicated
through multiple sources, including social
media, digital signage all over town, local
news and magazines and flyers detailing
guidelines, penalties and sales information.
Illegal fireworks have been a constant source
of resident complaints before the city council.
Hocking said patrols will target residences
and blocks were previous complaints have
been registered. He suggested people sign
up for Nixle.com, a community information
website which sends out localized alerts,
advisories and traffic reports to registrants.
Routine consent items (2-15) were passed
unanimously. A public hearing was opened
and closed without comment on item H.16;
the council unanimously approved support
for a federal grant application for fireworks
suppression and law enforcement at parades.
The council took action to designate or
reaffirm standby officers, forwarding names to
staff. Designees will be notified and contact
information filed and updated as necessary.
This action is taken to preserve government
chain-of-command if any councilmember
becomes unable to serve due to a state of
emergency.
Other council action included adding sharps
disposal and an organics waste disposal
component to the extension contract with
Republic Services and updates to current
regulations for massage establishments.
Mayor Pullen said SB731 established
uniform rules and regulations for the massage
therapy industry. In 2014, Governor Jerry
Brown added local regulatory authority,
including limiting the number of retail stores
per populations, and minimum sanitation
rules. Council member Jim Osborne said the
new rules are welcome. “This will limit the
numbers,” Osborne said, noting these stores
are often fronts for unseemly activities.

Development Board gave a year-end report
of the organization’s impact in Lawndale
and 10 surrounding cities. SBWDB delivers
employment and job training services to
adults and youth. This year’s job fairs have
seen an increase in on-the-spot hiring and
second interviews.The organization received a
$25,000grantfromChevron,andiscontinuing
to build up broadband infrastructure in the area
as a way to retain businesses and corporate
interest in the south bay.
A 15 minute closed session on proposed
litigationnettednoreportableaction,according
to City Attorney Tiffany Israel.
The council attended the Health and Safety
Pet Fair last weekend, and thanked staff
for mounting the successful event. Member
Osborne congratulated Hofmann and the
other newly appointed committee members.
Osborne said he will continue to watch closely
the Metro tax measure, which is proposing
a train stop in Lawndale. Osborne said the
impact in noise, congestion and potential
cost to the city could be critical.
Sam Pena of Republic Services noted
that due to the July 4th
holiday falling on
Monday, trash and recycling pick up will
be delayed by one day. Robo-calls will go
out, and residents are suggested to put trash
out on Tuesday.
The meeting was adjourned in honor of
Robert Haywood, a 60-year resident and
WWII veteran who passed recently.
The next meeting of the Lawndale City
Council will take place July 18, at 6:30 p.m. •

Beauty is, Literally, in the Eye of the Beholder
in Stylish, Hypnotic “The Neon Demon”
By Morgan Rojas
for www.cinemacy.com
After the credits roll and the lights come
up, the older man sitting next to me says
“So what’s for dinner?” and had we not just
seen “The Neon Demon,” I may have said
something like spaghetti and meatballs, but
all I can muster up now is a slight chuckle
while trying not be sick.
Days later, I find that I’m still trying to
‘digest’ the visual rollercoaster that is “The
Neon Demon.” Elle Fanning plays Jesse, a
small town girl with big dreams of making it
as a top model in LosAngeles. Her doe-eyed
innocence and all around aura seem that of
a porcelain doll, and at 16, she is quickly
becoming the industry’s next “It Girl.”
Her sudden rise to fame doesn’t come
without dangerous consequences. Jesse be-
friends the well-intentioned makeup artist
Ruby (Jena Malone) but is met with thinly
veiled jealousy by the other genetically gifted
blonde beauties, Gigi (Bella Heathcote) and
Sarah (Abbey Lee). Playing into the cattiness
of the fashion world and its unattainable
ideal of beauty, the girls’ relationship with
Jesse is a mix between “Heathers” meets
“Mean Girls,” but far darker. We’re talk-
ing necrophilia, physical torture, and other
bizarre abstractions.
At one point, Jesse is pressured by the
famedyetcreepyphotographerJack(Desmond
Harrington) to strip naked while he rubs gold
paint over her body in the name of “art.” Sure
it is evocative, but also quite disturbing. Not
only is she underage, but instructed by her
agent Jan – played by Christina Hendricks
– to tell everyone she is 19 “because 18 is
too on the nose.” She is fragile, literally a
blank canvas slowly being stained by the
industry and everything it stands for before
our very eyes. It is at this point that we see
Jesse’s transformation. Humility turns into
confidence, that turns into entitlement, and
the light that once illuminated her, fades.
Director Nicolas Winding Refn’s latest
cinematic experience (just saying ‘film’
seems to downplay his work) is more twisted
and bizarre than others in his repertoire. He
does again, however, manage to capture in
his characters that unique feeling of empti-
ness within chaos, which made “Drive” and
“Only God Forgives” memorable, for better
or for worse.
The performances from everyone involved,
including Keanu Reeves as a sketchy motel
owner and Alessandro Nivola as a major
fashion designer, play well against Refn’s
aesthetically ambitious vision. As the title
suggests, neon hues are present in almost
every scene, often a moving gradient like the
screensaver of a 95 Macintosh computer. I
also feel obligated to mention that there are
also multiple scenes with bright, unrelenting
flashing lights that may cause seizures (now
you’ve been warned!). And for as much as
fashionandbeautyareeroticizedbytheactions
of the characters, Natasha Braier’s artfully
realistic cinematography adds sophistication
and unpredictability to the film.
While visually inspiring, there is not much
of a narrative to follow, so those looking
for a story in the traditional sense may find
this film as vapid as the fashion industry
it sartorially mocks. Any attempt to fully
critique or even make sense of what is go-
ing on in the narrative can cause even more
confusion. The result is that the audience
just needs to go along for the ride in order
to enjoy it. Perhaps this is a case of style
over substance? But you’ve got to hand it
to Refn, he is certainly far more than a typi-
cal “director,” he is a creator of cinematic
worlds. Although I’m not speaking from
experience, one could safely assume that
“The Neon Demon” may best be enjoyed
on an empty stomach and with some type
of hallucinogenic?
‘The Neon Demon’ is rated R for disturb-
ing violent content, bloody images, graphic
nudity, a scene of aberrant sexuality, and
language. In theaters Friday, June 24. •

Hawthorne Happenings
From City Clerk Norb Huber
“Sunshine Superman”
Screening
This Monday, June 27th at the
Hawthorne Museum the Hawthorne
Historical Society will be showing
the recently released movie entitled,
“Sunshine Superman”. It is the story
of Carl Boenish, the Hawthorne
residentwhoinventedBASEjumping.
The somewhat tragic story is very moving
and the scenic photography in the movie is
spectacular. The screening will begin at 6:30
p.m. Refreshments will be served. Come out
and see a great movie and meet some good
neighbors.
Airplane Flight Patterns
First it was red light cameras, the next week
I moved on to the homeless problem, and last
weekwetookonillegalfireworks.Here’sanother
Hawthorne problem that has been going on for
quite some time and there is no real fix to it.
This week’s problem are low flying airplanes
passing over our homes illegally. Yes, the FAA
has flight patterns that pilots are instructed to
follow. Jet airliners departing LAX are to fly
out over the ocean and turn North or South
when they are at a certain altitude. There have
been times in the middle of the night where I
hear a plane and it sounds like its coming right
into our bedroom. I live in the Ramona tract
and I’ve been able to read the numbers on the
jet’s wings. Now, since a single engine test
flight plane came down on a town house on
Broadway, we find out that the small aircraft
pilots are to make a turn over the closed
Hawthorne Mall and turn down Hawthorne
Blvd. instead of traveling over the residential
neighborhoods to the west of the Hawthorne
Airport. Even the traffic controllers are not
always following the designated take off and
landing procedures that are in place for our
city’s airfield. Let’s just hope that the crash
that occurred recently will lead to enforcement
of the strict guide lines that are put in place
for the safety of our neighborhoods.

providing a great summer activity for ALL the
residents of Hawthorne. We want to bring all of
our GOOD NEIGHBORS together to celebrate
our unity and diversity. Instead of
downgrading our city, let’s build it
up by coming together. We want
to build a “closer community”.

us be HAWTHORNE UNITED. Mark your
calendars for Saturday, July 16th. ***Special
Announcement! Late breaking news! JUST
ADDED: This year we will have a “beer
garden” as part of Good Neighbors Day. So,
instead of having coffee with the clerk or
coffee with the cops, now you can have a
“Cold One with the Clerk”. I have to warn
you that it takes very little alcohol to get me
going. I may be working the event also, so
you may have to hoist one on your own. I
can’t think of a better way to bring our good
neighbors together than to have a fair number
of our citizens enjoy a cold one in beautiful,
downtown Hawthorne. Most of our problems
would disappear, at least for one afternoon.
THIS ONE’s for you Hawthorne! I can’t wait!
Car Show
It’s not too late to enter your car in
Hawthorne’s Car Show to be held during Good
Neighbors Day. Every entry will receive a
“goodie bag” full of nice items donated by
vendors. We will be awarding trophies to cars
in several categories. Plus, it’s just a good day
to hang out with your friends. Please contact
us if you have a car you wish to enter.
Hall of Fame Banquet
In case you are wondering when the
Hawthorne Hall of Fame Banquet will be held,
wehavedecidedtomoveittoOctober. Itusually
is held the night before Good Neighbors Day.
It was too much work to pull off two events on
the same weekend. Information regarding the
banquet will be released this summer.
Gone Fishing
Next week I’ll be going on our annual “men/
boys only” fishing trip up to the western side
of the High Sierras. This will mark our 27th
consecutive summer that we have spent a week
fishing, camping and drinking cold ones up at
a lake named Florence. Don’t try to go there,
the road is bad and we really don’t want any
company enjoying our beautiful, secret spot.
Let’s just say the fishing is terrible, the bugs
are bad, and there are no campsites. I will
see ya all when I return in a week. •

Looking Up
By Bob Eklund
If you cast your eyes toward the
constellation Cygnus the Swan, you’ll
be looking in the direction of the largest
planet yet discovered around a double-star
system. It’s too faint to see with the naked
eye, but a team led by astronomers from
NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and
San Diego State University used the Kepler
Space Telescope to identify the new planet,
Kepler-1647b.
Planets that orbit two stars are called
circumbinary planets, or “Tatooine” planets,
after Luke Skywalker’s homeland in “Star
Wars.” To detect planets, the Kepler telescope
looks for slight dips in brightness that hint a
planet might be transiting in front of a star,
blocking some of the star’s light.
“But finding circumbinary planets is much
harder than finding planets around single
stars,” said SDSU astronomerWilliamWelsh,
one of the paper’s coauthors. “The transits
are not regularly spaced in time and they
can vary in duration and even depth.”
Once a candidate planet is found,
researchers employ advanced computer
programs to determine if it really is a planet.
It can be a grueling process. Laurance Doyle,
a coauthor on the paper and astronomer at
the Carl Sagan Center, SETI Institute, noticed
a transit back in 2011, but more data and
several years of analysis were needed to
confirm that the transit was indeed caused by
a circumbinary planet.A network of amateur
astronomers in the KELT Follow-Up Network
provided additional observations that helped
the researchers estimate the planet’s mass.
Kepler-1647b is 3,700 light-years away and
approximately 4.4 billion years old, roughly
the same age as the Earth. The stars are
similar to the Sun, with one slightly larger
than our home star and the other slightly
smaller. The planet has a mass and radius
nearly identical to that of Jupiter, making
it the largest transiting circumbinary planet
ever found.
“It’s a bit curious that this biggest planet
took so long to confirm, since it is easier
to find big planets than small ones,” said
SDSU astronomer Jerome Orosz, another
coauthor on the study. “It took so long to
confirm because its orbital period is so long.”
The planet takes 1,107 days (just over
three years) to orbit its host stars, the
longest period of any confirmed transiting
exoplanet found so far. The planet is also
much further away from its stars than any
other circumbinary planet, breaking with the
tendency for circumbinary planets to have
close-in orbits. Interestingly, its orbit puts
the planet within the so-called habitable
zone. Like Jupiter, however, Kepler-1647b
is a gas giant, making the planet unlikely to
host life. Yet if the planet has large moons,
they could potentially be suitable for life.
“Habitability aside, Kepler-1647b is
important because it is the tip of the iceberg
of a theoretically predicted population of
large, long-period circumbinary planets,”
Welsh said.
“It looks like more than 40 percent of
circumbinary planets are in the habitable
zones of their stars,” Doyle said. “It seems
that the scene from Star Wars where Luke
Skywalker is watching the double sunset may
not be so rare after all. But physics might
be more difficult—everything from shadows
to rainbows would come in pairs.” •

Farro Salad with Veggies in Basil-Grapefruit Dressing
Ingredients
Preparation
1. Place farro in a large pot with plenty of salted water. Bring to a boil
and cook until al dente, about 40 minutes. One minute (depending on
the size of the asparagus) before the farro is done, add the asparagus
to the pot. Drain.
2. While the farro is cooking, make the dressing. Whisk together
the grapefruit juice, garlic, mustard and olive oil. Stir in the basil.
When the farro is done and while it’s still hot, toss half the dressing
with the farro. Taste and season with salt and pepper. Let sit for
10 minutes to allow the flavors of the dressing to absorb. Stir in
the cherry tomatoes and arugula along with the remaining dressing.
Taste once more and serve.

Kill the 9-to-5 by Turning Your
Hobby into a Thriving Business
(BPT) - A beloved hobby can feel like a
mini vacation from everyday life. Whether
it’s gardening for relaxation, photography as a
creative outlet or computer coding to exercise
the brain, hobbies serve as an escape from
stress and boredom.
What if rather than a hobby being your
escape, it was what you did for a career?
“When you do what you love, it doesn’t feel
likework.However,peopleareintimidatedbythe
idea of transitioning a hobby into this type of
dream,” says Jim Salmon, vice president of
business services at Navy Federal Credit Union.
“Becomingasuccessfulentrepreneurdoesn’thave
to be difficult with the right drive and passion.”
Navy Federal Business Services has helped
thousands of people turn their dreams of own-
ing a small business into reality by providing
expert guidance and financial support through
Business Services products. Here are some of
Salmon’s expert tips based on best practices
he’s observed through his close relationship
with entrepreneurial clients:
1. Take your time.
Becoming a successful entrepreneur doesn’t
mean you have to drop everything and devote all
your time to starting a business. In fact, research
shows the opposite: People who keep their day
jobs while starting companies are a third less
likely to fail than those who abandon their full
time jobs. Instead, they’re tinkering, research-
ing and cautiously testing things out to see if
their idea is a viable business venture and if
there is a market for their product or service.
2. Set a timeline.
Is there a season where it would make sense to
testoutyourbusinessventure?Orperhapsthere’s
a transitional time in your life where you’ll be
looking to open a new chapter. For example,
transitioning your hobby into a viable business
venture a great option for active duty military
personnel and veterans because they naturally
begintothinkaboutwhattheirsecondcareerwill
be after retiring or leaving the Armed Forces.
3. Decide on time commitment.
Decide how much time you are willing to
dedicate to your new venture in the beginning.
Being an entrepreneur means being your own
bosswhichaffordsyouunprecedentedflexibility,
but the effort you put in directly effects what
you get out. Keep in mind, entrepreneurship
isn’t just for full-time professionals. Turning
a hobby into a career is a great option for
military and stay-at-home parents who require
flexibility in regards to working hours and
location, but they may have more open time
to dedicate to the transition.
4. Create a business plan.
Transitioning a hobby into a profession
is a lot of fun, but it’s also serious business
if you want to be successful. That means
creating a business plan that includes goals
and plans for attaining them. This will serve
as the foundation for how you strategize and
build a successful business today. Plus, when it
comes time to finance your budding business,
a solid business plan will give you a leg up
and direction for the future.
5. Find financial backing.
Depending on what type of business you want
to pursue, you may need some additional fund-
ing beyond what you can afford. Establishing
a relationship with a financial institution like
Navy Federal Credit Union will help you learn
more about small business loans and lending
products that will help your small business
grow. Bring your passion and your business
plan - potential investors and financial institu-
tions alike will want to see both before they
make a decision.

Proper Flu Etiquette to Help Keep
You and Your Family Flu-Free
Seniors
(BPT) - It came out of nowhere. The sudden
fever, aches, and chills you’re experiencing
are unbearable. You crawl into bed, thinking
there’s not much you can do.You already feel
guilty for bringing the flu home to your kids
and spouse. You can try to fight it, but the
virus will likely make its way through your
household. Right?
That’s what the majority of U.S. adults
think. According to a recent national survey
conducted by the National Foundation for
Infectious Diseases (NFID) more than half of
U.S. adults (55 percent) incorrectly think that
when they get sick, others in the household
are bound to get the flu and they just have
to wait for the flu virus to pass. The survey
also found that almost twice as many U.S.
adults call a healthcare professional when their
child experiences flu symptoms (46 percent)
versus when they personally experience flu
symptoms (25 percent).
“It’s important for adults to take care of
themselves as well as those they care for,
including children. The virus does not have
to take down your whole family if one person
gets sick,” says Dr. William Schaffner, MD,
NFID medical director. “There are ways to
fight flu. If you see a healthcare professional
quickly, they may prescribe prescription flu
medicines that may help you get better faster.
Your doctor may also prescribe them to prevent
others in your household from getting the flu.”
“Be proactive when it comes to the flu. It’s
the considerate thing to do,” says Lizzie Post,
great-great-granddaughter of etiquette guru
Emily Post and co-author of Emily Post’s
Etiquette 18th edition. “Etiquette is all about
consideration. Using basic good etiquette can
help keep you and your family flu-free by
preventing the virus’ spread.”
The Emily Post Institute offers the follow-
ing etiquette tips to manage situations where
the flu virus could spread:
• Know your F.A.C.T.S.: If you’re expe-
riencing Fever, Aches, Chills, Tiredness and
Sudden Onset, it’s likely flu. Realize that
you’re contagious and quickly see a healthcare
professional.
• Stay home: If you have flu symptoms,
it’s okay to cancel plans or take a sick day.
The polite thing to do is to stay away from
crowds to avoid spreading the virus. Be sure
to call your host, or the office to let them
know you won’t be able to make it.
• Stock up: Keep tissues and hand sanitizers
with you at all times. If it’s others who are
sick, like that cougher or sneezer next to you,
prompt them to protect others by offering a
tissue or a spritz of alcohol-based sanitizer.
• Hands down. Keep your hands below
your shoulders when in public. The idea is
to avoid touching your face, which may also
help keep you from getting sick after rubbing
your nose, mouth or eyes with unclean hands.

League Baseball team began quest for its
fourth consecutive District 37 championship
with a 16-6 win over Aviation Little League
from DelAire (an unincorporated community
located between Hawthorne and El Segundo)
in the first round last Thursday at Thorpe
Park. Lennox moved on to take on Compton,
a 10-0 first round winner over Wiseburn last
Thursday, last Saturday but results were
unavailable. Aviation and Wiseburn played
in the loser’s bracket last Friday. All games
are at Thorpe Park. The first final was played
last Monday with a necessary second game
on Tuesday. The winner moves on to the
Section 3 Tournament that starts on Saturday,
also at Thorpe Park.

Wiseburn Rolls Over Tri Park

Last week, local District 37 Little League

Tournaments. In last Sunday’s Junior (ages
13-14) Baseball All-Star contest, the contest
was long and dragging but it was Wiseburn
of Hawthorne that downed Tri Park from El
Camino Village, 14-7 last Saturday at Jim
Thorpe Park in Hawthorne.
In the seven-inning game that lasted nearly
three and a half hours, Wiseburn started out
with a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the
second inning. Tri Park, that includes players
from Hawthorne, Lawndale, El CaminoVillage
and Gardena, rallied for three runs to tie the
game in the bottom of the second. From there,
Wiseburn came back with seven unanswered
runs for a 10-3 bulge through four innings. Tri
Park got as close as four runs but Wiseburn
put the game well out of reach with four runs
in the bottom of the sixth. Perhaps the key
blow for Wiseburn was a two-run home run
from Cameron Lan in the bottom of the third.
That round-tripper gave Wiseburn a 6-3 lead.
Wiseburn added four more runs in the fourth
to blow the game wide open. Danny Del La
Cruz collected three hits in five at-bats and
drove in three runs.
“Thekidsdidagreatjob,”Wiseburnmanager
Josh Cruz said. “The heat got to the players
that caused the game to take awhile.”
For Tri Park, Amir Lee had a fine game
going three-for-four with two runs batted in
and two runs scored. Matthew Chavez had a
run-scoring double that cut Wiseburn’s lead
to 10-6 in the top of the sixth.
“We made a lot of errors,” Tri Park manager
Oscar Aguilar said. “It cost us about five or
six runs.”
Wiseburn played in the second round of
the winner’s bracket against Lawndale, which
defeated Lennox in the first round, last Sunday
at Thorpe Park. Tri Park played in the loser’s
bracket against Lennox.The tournament lasted,
at least, through Wednesday but, if necessary,
a second championship game will be played
Friday at 7 p.m. at Thorpe Park.

The Lennox Senior Little League (ages
15-16) Twins captured the Carl Magee, Jr.
Tournament of Champions title by shutting
out the Tri Park Bluejays 4-0 on June 12
at Jim Thorpe Park. Winning pitcher went
the distance allowing six hits. He struck out
seven batters and walked just one. Devin
Garza supplied the entire offense for the
Twins. He hit a three-run home run in the
bottom of the second inning. In the fifth, he
drove in Salvador Mercado with a base hit.
CIF-SS Announces New
Football Playoff FormaT
For many years, the CIF-Southern Section
football playoffs have been played depending
on the strength of leagues with the average
enrollments of high schools. Things are
different, today. The level of talents in the
WiseburnbaserunnerCameronLaninchespastsecondbaseinlastSaturday’sDistrict37JuniorLittleLeagueAll-StarBaseballTournament
play. Lan had a home run.
high school sports are more extreme with top
athletes choosing certain high schools, instead
of staying with local ones. As a result, the
Southern Section Committee is going by the
individual school talent, instead of the leagues.
Over the past two seasons, the Bay, Ocean
and Pioneer Leagues played in the Western
Division, which was classified as DivisionVII.
One local school moving up from Division
VII to Division VI will be Lawndale, which
would have won the Ocean League last season
but had to forfeit four wins, including two
in league, due to use of an ineligible player.
The Cardinals will play in that division with
the likes of Manhattan Beach, Mira Costa
and Pioneer League power West Torrance.
Inglewood and Morningside go down to
Division IX. Leuzinger and Inglewood will
vie in Division X. Hawthorne, which struggled
over the past several seasons, goes to Division
XII. There are still a total of 13 divisions in
the Southern Section 11-man football with
Division I, formerly the PAC Five, being the
most highly prestigious division. One of the
teams in that division will be Serra High of
Gardena, which was eliminated by Santa Ana
Mater Dei in the quarterfinals last season.
Centennial High of Corona won the PAC Five
last year but lost to Concord De La Salle in
the California State Open Division final. •

District’s Eight-Grade Students
Will Receive Vision Screening Services
By Cristian Vasquez
Members of the Hawthorne School Board
approved an agreement with Helen Keller
International that will provide vision-
screening services to the school district’s
eight-grade students. This agreement will
also cover services for any Hawthorne School
District student that is referred, including
sixth and seventh grade students.
“The Services shall be furnished on
the premises of public school location(s)
established by the HSD [Hawthorne School
District] and mutually agreed by HKI
[Helen Keller International] and HSD to be
appropriate for the services offered,” states
the agreement attached to the board agenda.
“The services shall be delivered on days and
times mutually agreed to by both parties.”
This is a renewal of existing agreement
and establishes the rates of service at $3.50
per student. It is estimated that these vision
care services will reach 1,100 of the district’s
eighth grade students. In addition, HKI is
committed to providing an estimated 250
children with prescription eyeglasses [to
students referred to ChildSight® on the initial
vision screening completed by ChildSight® or
the school nurse], free of charge to the district
or students served through the agreement.
ChildSight® provides vision screenings
and prescription glasses to children in
impoverished communities in California, as
well as states like Connecticut, New Jersey,
NewYork and Ohio. By working directly with
school administrators and nurses, ChildSight®
staff is able to provide high-quality screenings,
which in turn allows a licensed optometrist
to prescribe adequate eyeglasses for kids in
need of vision correction.
“Optometrists with whom HKI contracts
shall present HSD with an original Certificate
of Insurance evidencing insurance coverage
for general liability, workman’s compensation
and medical malpractice, in the amounts
required by the HSD,” states the agreement.
The agreement will take effect Aug. 1 and
is set to expire June 30, 2017, unless renewal
occurs via the approval of an amendment by
both HSD and HKI.
HKI, which was founded in 1915,
spearheads a worldwide effort to save the
sight and lives of disadvantaged people. By
establishing a wide-range of programs based
on research and evidence in vision, health and
nutrition, HKI continues to fight the causes
and effects of blindness and malnutrition.
At the moment there are more than 120
programs in 21 countries in Africa, Asia
and the United States dedicated to helping
save people’s vision.
“Helen Keller International also reaches
tens of thousands of underserved youth
in the United States each year through
ChildSight®,” states the HKI website
[http://www.hki.org/about-us]. “This unique
program provides free vision screenings
and prescription eyeglasses to students
living in poverty.”
HKI’s work provides communities, who
otherwise would never be able to afford
such services, cataract surgeries, vision
correction, vitaminA supplements, screening
and treatment for diabetic retinopathy, as
well as providing treatments and cures for
overlooked tropical diseases. Part of the
mission for HKI is reducing malnutrition via
the spread of efforts tailored to improving
nutrition practices for families such as
maternal and child nutrition education,
by reinforcing staple foods considered to
be rich in essential nutrients, as well as
promoting “globally recognized family-led
agricultural programs and community-based
management of acute malnutrition.”
For the agreement with the HSD, HKI
takes full responsibility in providing,
maintaining and insuring all equipment to be
used in the providing of its services. “HKI
employees, representatives, contractors and
agents will report suspected child abuse or
neglect if he/she knows or has reasonable
cause to believe or suspect an incident,”
states the agreement.
All students’ personal information collected
during the vision screenings will remain
confidential. The District will disseminate
information to parents regarding the vision
screening services and all relevant dates.

young and ready for a home of her own
now that her kittens are weaned. Naomi is
fine all by herself while you are at work,
but loves it when you return home! She
enjoys interaction with you as she plays with
string and wand toys. Soft and fluffy, she
is not as big as appears and weighs only 8
½ pounds.  Naomi is not good with other
cats or dogs and will be happy to be the
only cat unless you adopt her with one of
her kittens - Gru, Lydia, or Bob.
This dashing young boy just loves to
be held! So much so, that sometimes Bob
would rather cuddle than play.  He is a
character! Bob is rough-and-tumble, but
smart, affectionate and playful.  And boy
does he like attention!  Bob is courteous
when meeting new cats or kittens and he
needs to have one for a friend. He is good
with cats and ok with children eight or older
and friendly calm dogs. Welcome this little
guy into your life for a forever friend.
Lydia is the perfect kitten! She is a balance
ofspunkinessandsoftness. Herbeautifulfluffy
fur will need regular brushing to keep her
adorable appearance. She has a confidence
about her that makes her what we call “plug
and play”.  It means she will do well in
many situations. Lydia does wonderfully
with older children, friendly dogs and other
kitties. This girl is kissable sweet!
Gru is so special that he can steal your
heart just by reaching out to you with one
of his big white “gloved” paws.  He is full
of fearless curiosity and energy.  This super
smart boy is so responsive that he will come

when you call him “baby.” Gru will provide
you with endless entertainment even though
he is not the cuddliest kitten. He just doesn’t
have time for that! Gru loves to play with
other kitties. He is good with older children
and friendly dogs, and simply loves other cats.
Jade and her sister Emerald were found
by a Good Samaritan when they were just
days old after someone had thrown them
away in a trash can. They went to an expert
bottle feeder, where they thrived.  Because
these sisters were bottle fed, Emerald and
Jade are incredibly outgoing, love people
and are super affectionate.  They would
be great for gentle children, or in a busy
household. Emerald and Jade get along with
other kitties, but have a very strong adverse
reaction to dogs. It is possible that they might
adjust to a dog who leaves them alone, but
they definitely do not want to interact with
one. These girls would adore finding a home
together, even with other kittens in their
foster home they tend to gravitate to each
other.  They absolutely cannot be an only
kitty in the home, they are too young and
need a playful companion to wrestle, chew
and romp with.
Powder is a high-energy alpha cat who is
just over a year old. He is almost all white
with his gray face and tail with beautiful
grayish green eyes. This cool cat loves to
be the center of attention, is curious and
always eager to learn.  Powder plays with
a huge dog and is respected by all the other
kitties. He’s not much of a talker, but does
purr really loud.  Powder is a very loving
boy who likes to be held. He is totally ready
for his forever home. To be happy, Powder
needs to be adopted with another feline or
have a feline friend at his new home.

  • 1. Lawndale TribuneAND lAwNDAle News Herald Publications - Inglewood, Hawthorne, Lawndale, El Segundo, Torrance & Manhattan Beach Community Newspapers Since 1911 - Circulation 30,000 - Readership 60,000 (310) 322-1830 - June 23, 2016 The Weekly Newspaper of Lawndale City Council Elects New City Clerk; Aggressive Campaign Against Illegal Fireworks By Haleemon Anderson The Lawndale City Council elected long- time resident Rhonda Gorman Hofmann to a two-year term as City Clerk by unanimous vote Monday. The action, taken at the final meeting of the fiscal year, fills the position vacated by Bernadette Suarez, who assumed the council seat of the late Larry Rudolph. Hofmann and applicants Sirley Cuevas and Henrietta Martinez were asked to introduce themselves and answer questions from the council. Nominations were called for and Hofmann was nominated by her predecessor, Suarez. “I’m ecstatic,” Hofmann said after the vote. “I was looking for three votes; I’m happy with five.” She was sworn in with her mother Doris at her side. Her father, Harold E. Hofmann, was mayor from 1990 until his passing in 2013. The Lawndale community center is named in his honor. The council also filled seats on the city’s cable commission and senior advisory committee. Mayor Robert Pullen-Mills noted that all four applicants to the cable group and nine of the 11 who applied to the senior advisory are incumbents. All members were unanimously approved for appointment to two-year terms. These shared governance committees provide recommendations to the council. One seat on each remains unfilled. In the public safety report, Lieutenant John Hocking detailed an aggressive, pro-active campaign against illegal fireworks. The sheriff’s department, in collaboration with Los Angeles County, intends to crack down on illegal sale and usage through an elaborate program of undercover buys, communication and increased manpower. “We will have 16 extra deputies on patrol,” Hocking said. He said legal fireworks and sales sites should clearly display the “safe and sane” logo. He cautioned that this “no tolerance” policy is being communicated through multiple sources, including social media, digital signage all over town, local news and magazines and flyers detailing guidelines, penalties and sales information. Illegal fireworks have been a constant source of resident complaints before the city council. Hocking said patrols will target residences and blocks were previous complaints have been registered. He suggested people sign up for Nixle.com, a community information website which sends out localized alerts, advisories and traffic reports to registrants. Routine consent items (2-15) were passed unanimously. A public hearing was opened and closed without comment on item H.16; the council unanimously approved support for a federal grant application for fireworks suppression and law enforcement at parades. The council took action to designate or reaffirm standby officers, forwarding names to staff. Designees will be notified and contact information filed and updated as necessary. This action is taken to preserve government chain-of-command if any councilmember becomes unable to serve due to a state of emergency. Other council action included adding sharps disposal and an organics waste disposal component to the extension contract with Republic Services and updates to current regulations for massage establishments. Mayor Pullen said SB731 established uniform rules and regulations for the massage therapy industry. In 2014, Governor Jerry Brown added local regulatory authority, including limiting the number of retail stores per populations, and minimum sanitation rules. Council member Jim Osborne said the new rules are welcome. “This will limit the numbers,” Osborne said, noting these stores are often fronts for unseemly activities. ArepresentativeoftheSouthBayWorkforce Development Board gave a year-end report of the organization’s impact in Lawndale and 10 surrounding cities. SBWDB delivers employment and job training services to adults and youth. This year’s job fairs have seen an increase in on-the-spot hiring and second interviews. The organization received a $25,000grantfromChevron,andiscontinuing to build up broadband infrastructure in the area as a way to retain businesses and corporate interest in the south bay. A 15 minute closed session on proposed litigationnettednoreportableaction, according to City Attorney Tiffany Israel. The council attended the Health and Safety Pet Fair last weekend, and thanked staff for mounting the successful event. Member Osborne congratulated Hofmann and the other newly appointed committee members. Osborne said he will continue to watch closely the Metro tax measure, which is proposing a train stop in Lawndale. Osborne said the impact in noise, congestion and potential cost to the city could be critical. Sam Pena of Republic Services noted that due to the July 4th holiday falling on Monday, trash and recycling pick up will be delayed by one day. Robo-calls will go out, and residents are suggested to put trash out on Tuesday. The meeting was adjourned in honor of Robert Haywood, a 60-year resident and WWII veteran who passed recently. The next meeting of the Lawndale City Council will take place July 18, at 6:30 p.m. • Earth Carnival Brings Maxine Waters to Environmental Charter High School Environmental Charter High School held an Earth Carnival on May 27. • 2. Page 2 June 23, 2016 Film Review Beauty is, Literally, in the Eye of the Beholder in Stylish, Hypnotic “The Neon Demon” By Morgan Rojas for www.cinemacy.com After the credits roll and the lights come up, the older man sitting next to me says “So what’s for dinner?” and had we not just seen “The Neon Demon,” I may have said something like spaghetti and meatballs, but all I can muster up now is a slight chuckle while trying not be sick. Days later, I find that I’m still trying to ‘digest’ the visual rollercoaster that is “The Neon Demon.” Elle Fanning plays Jesse, a small town girl with big dreams of making it as a top model in LosAngeles. Her doe-eyed innocence and all around aura seem that of a porcelain doll, and at 16, she is quickly becoming the industry’s next “It Girl.” Her sudden rise to fame doesn’t come without dangerous consequences. Jesse be- friends the well-intentioned makeup artist Ruby (Jena Malone) but is met with thinly veiled jealousy by the other genetically gifted blonde beauties, Gigi (Bella Heathcote) and Sarah (Abbey Lee). Playing into the cattiness of the fashion world and its unattainable ideal of beauty, the girls’ relationship with Jesse is a mix between “Heathers” meets “Mean Girls,” but far darker. We’re talk- ing necrophilia, physical torture, and other bizarre abstractions. At one point, Jesse is pressured by the famedyetcreepyphotographerJack(Desmond Harrington) to strip naked while he rubs gold paint over her body in the name of “art.” Sure it is evocative, but also quite disturbing. Not only is she underage, but instructed by her agent Jan – played by Christina Hendricks – to tell everyone she is 19 “because 18 is too on the nose.” She is fragile, literally a blank canvas slowly being stained by the industry and everything it stands for before our very eyes. It is at this point that we see Jesse’s transformation. Humility turns into confidence, that turns into entitlement, and the light that once illuminated her, fades. Director Nicolas Winding Refn’s latest cinematic experience (just saying ‘film’ seems to downplay his work) is more twisted and bizarre than others in his repertoire. He does again, however, manage to capture in his characters that unique feeling of empti- ness within chaos, which made “Drive” and “Only God Forgives” memorable, for better or for worse. The performances from everyone involved, including Keanu Reeves as a sketchy motel owner and Alessandro Nivola as a major fashion designer, play well against Refn’s aesthetically ambitious vision. As the title suggests, neon hues are present in almost every scene, often a moving gradient like the screensaver of a 95 Macintosh computer. I also feel obligated to mention that there are also multiple scenes with bright, unrelenting flashing lights that may cause seizures (now you’ve been warned!). And for as much as fashionandbeautyareeroticizedbytheactions of the characters, Natasha Braier’s artfully realistic cinematography adds sophistication and unpredictability to the film. While visually inspiring, there is not much of a narrative to follow, so those looking for a story in the traditional sense may find this film as vapid as the fashion industry it sartorially mocks. Any attempt to fully critique or even make sense of what is go- ing on in the narrative can cause even more confusion. The result is that the audience just needs to go along for the ride in order to enjoy it. Perhaps this is a case of style over substance? But you’ve got to hand it to Refn, he is certainly far more than a typi- cal “director,” he is a creator of cinematic worlds. Although I’m not speaking from experience, one could safely assume that “The Neon Demon” may best be enjoyed on an empty stomach and with some type of hallucinogenic? ‘The Neon Demon’ is rated R for disturb- ing violent content, bloody images, graphic nudity, a scene of aberrant sexuality, and language. In theaters Friday, June 24. • “As the title suggests, neon hues are present in almost every scene, often a moving gradient like the screensaver of a 95 Macintosh computer.” Elle Fanning in “The Neon Demon.” Courtesy of Broad Green Pictures. • 3. June 23, 2016 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings From City Clerk Norb Huber “Sunshine Superman” Screening This Monday, June 27th at the Hawthorne Museum the Hawthorne Historical Society will be showing the recently released movie entitled, “Sunshine Superman”. It is the story of Carl Boenish, the Hawthorne residentwhoinventedBASEjumping. The somewhat tragic story is very moving and the scenic photography in the movie is spectacular. The screening will begin at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Come out and see a great movie and meet some good neighbors. Airplane Flight Patterns First it was red light cameras, the next week I moved on to the homeless problem, and last weekwetookonillegalfireworks. Here’sanother Hawthorne problem that has been going on for quite some time and there is no real fix to it. This week’s problem are low flying airplanes passing over our homes illegally. Yes, the FAA has flight patterns that pilots are instructed to follow. Jet airliners departing LAX are to fly out over the ocean and turn North or South when they are at a certain altitude. There have been times in the middle of the night where I hear a plane and it sounds like its coming right into our bedroom. I live in the Ramona tract and I’ve been able to read the numbers on the jet’s wings. Now, since a single engine test flight plane came down on a town house on Broadway, we find out that the small aircraft pilots are to make a turn over the closed Hawthorne Mall and turn down Hawthorne Blvd. instead of traveling over the residential neighborhoods to the west of the Hawthorne Airport. Even the traffic controllers are not always following the designated take off and landing procedures that are in place for our city’s airfield. Let’s just hope that the crash that occurred recently will lead to enforcement of the strict guide lines that are put in place for the safety of our neighborhoods. Good Neighbors Day Hawthorne United It’s coming soon. The 6thAnnual Hawthorne Hometown Fair - Good Family Fun - Live Music on stage - Classic Car Show - Great Food - Talent Competitions - Games for the kids - Vendors -Art Walk - Historical Museum - Tours of the old Hawthorne Jail (before it is torn down) - The Hawthorne Historical Society sponsors this event with the sole purpose of providing a great summer activity for ALL the residents of Hawthorne. We want to bring all of our GOOD NEIGHBORS together to celebrate our unity and diversity. Instead of downgrading our city, let’s build it up by coming together. We want to build a “closer community”. Invite your friends to attend. We are looking for Hawthorne talent. If you know of an individual or a group that would like to perform please contact us. If you wish to be a vendor, exhibitor, or show your car, just let us know. Our contact phone number is 310-370-0675 or email me at  norbhuber@gmail.com.) Let us be HAWTHORNE UNITED. Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 16th. ***Special Announcement! Late breaking news! JUST ADDED: This year we will have a “beer garden” as part of Good Neighbors Day. So, instead of having coffee with the clerk or coffee with the cops, now you can have a “Cold One with the Clerk”. I have to warn you that it takes very little alcohol to get me going. I may be working the event also, so you may have to hoist one on your own. I can’t think of a better way to bring our good neighbors together than to have a fair number of our citizens enjoy a cold one in beautiful, downtown Hawthorne. Most of our problems would disappear, at least for one afternoon. THIS ONE’s for you Hawthorne! I can’t wait! Car Show It’s not too late to enter your car in Hawthorne’s Car Show to be held during Good Neighbors Day. Every entry will receive a “goodie bag” full of nice items donated by vendors. We will be awarding trophies to cars in several categories. Plus, it’s just a good day to hang out with your friends. Please contact us if you have a car you wish to enter. Hall of Fame Banquet In case you are wondering when the Hawthorne Hall of Fame Banquet will be held, wehavedecidedtomoveittoOctober. Itusually is held the night before Good Neighbors Day. It was too much work to pull off two events on the same weekend. Information regarding the banquet will be released this summer. Gone Fishing Next week I’ll be going on our annual “men/ boys only” fishing trip up to the western side of the High Sierras. This will mark our 27th consecutive summer that we have spent a week fishing, camping and drinking cold ones up at a lake named Florence. Don’t try to go there, the road is bad and we really don’t want any company enjoying our beautiful, secret spot. Let’s just say the fishing is terrible, the bugs are bad, and there are no campsites. I will see ya all when I return in a week. • Email me at: norbhuber@gmail.com News for the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ Police Reports Mon 6/6/16 to Sun 6/12/16 ROBBERY 3100 W ROSECRANS AV FAST FOOD STORE Mon 6/6/16 13:00 P r o p e r t y Ta k e n : M I S C B I L L DENOMINATION, APPROX $300 IN CASH BURGLARY 13900 S HAWTHORNE WY Mon 6/6/16 13:13 BURGLARY – RESIDENTIAL 12200 S FREEMAN AV HOUSE Mon 6/6/16 15:09 Property Taken: HP LAPTOP (NEW) Method of Entry: PRIED POE: SLIDING DOOR BURGLARY – RESIDENTIAL 4500 W 118TH ST HOUSE Tue 6/7/16 11:26 Method of Entry: OPENED BURGLARY – RESIDENTIAL 4500 W 118TH ST HOUSE Tue 6/7/16 11:26 Method of Entry: OPENED BURGLARY – RESIDENTIAL 4500 W 118TH ST HOUSE Tue 6/7/16 11:26 Method of Entry: OPENED BURGLARY 4500 W 118TH ST Tue 6/7/16 11:26 ROBBERY W 132ND ST/S JEFFERSON AV STREET, HIGHWAY, ALLEY Wed 6/8/16 12:57 Property Taken: LG K7 CELL PHONES (213-835-7801) BURGLARY 13300 S ROSELLE AV Fri 6/10/16 07:57 P r o p e r t y Ta k e n : O L D W O R K IDENTIFICATION (MISSION HOSPITAL) ROBBERY 11800 S HAWTHORNE BL GROCERY, SUPERMARKET Fri 6/10/16 16:04 Property Taken: CHICKEN BURGLARY – COMMERCIAL 4600 W EL SEGUNDO BL LAUNDRYMAT Sat 6/11/16 06:48 Property Taken: COMPUTER EQUIP TOOLS CURRENCY Property Taken: $600 in misc bills and coins, DVR Recorder for security camera system, Blue in color Makita handsaw with red metal case Method of Entry: PRIED POE: OTHER DOOR Entry Loc: FRONT BURGLARY – COMMERCIAL 4800 W ROSECRANS AV STORAGE SHED, PUBLIC Sat 6/11/16 16:25 Property Taken: various LEGO playsets $400 each Method of Entry: PRIED POE: ROOF BURGLARY – RESIDENTIAL 4800 W ROSECRANS AV STORAGE SHED Sun 6/12/16 13:06 Property Taken: 25 BOXES OF PACKAGED LEGGOS (TOYS) Method of Entry: UNKNOWN ROBBERY W 139TH ST/S CERISEAV Sun 6/12/16 22:34 Property Taken: $1,000 CASH IN US CURRENCY ($100, 50’S AND $20’S) • Looking Up By Bob Eklund If you cast your eyes toward the constellation Cygnus the Swan, you’ll be looking in the direction of the largest planet yet discovered around a double-star system. It’s too faint to see with the naked eye, but a team led by astronomers from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and San Diego State University used the Kepler Space Telescope to identify the new planet, Kepler-1647b. Planets that orbit two stars are called circumbinary planets, or “Tatooine” planets, after Luke Skywalker’s homeland in “Star Wars.” To detect planets, the Kepler telescope looks for slight dips in brightness that hint a planet might be transiting in front of a star, blocking some of the star’s light. “But finding circumbinary planets is much harder than finding planets around single stars,” said SDSU astronomerWilliamWelsh, one of the paper’s coauthors. “The transits are not regularly spaced in time and they can vary in duration and even depth.” Once a candidate planet is found, researchers employ advanced computer programs to determine if it really is a planet. It can be a grueling process. Laurance Doyle, a coauthor on the paper and astronomer at the Carl Sagan Center, SETI Institute, noticed a transit back in 2011, but more data and several years of analysis were needed to confirm that the transit was indeed caused by a circumbinary planet.A network of amateur astronomers in the KELT Follow-Up Network provided additional observations that helped the researchers estimate the planet’s mass. Kepler-1647b is 3,700 light-years away and approximately 4.4 billion years old, roughly the same age as the Earth. The stars are similar to the Sun, with one slightly larger than our home star and the other slightly smaller. The planet has a mass and radius nearly identical to that of Jupiter, making it the largest transiting circumbinary planet ever found. “It’s a bit curious that this biggest planet took so long to confirm, since it is easier to find big planets than small ones,” said SDSU astronomer Jerome Orosz, another coauthor on the study. “It took so long to confirm because its orbital period is so long.” The planet takes 1,107 days (just over three years) to orbit its host stars, the longest period of any confirmed transiting exoplanet found so far. The planet is also much further away from its stars than any other circumbinary planet, breaking with the tendency for circumbinary planets to have close-in orbits. Interestingly, its orbit puts the planet within the so-called habitable zone. Like Jupiter, however, Kepler-1647b is a gas giant, making the planet unlikely to host life. Yet if the planet has large moons, they could potentially be suitable for life. “Habitability aside, Kepler-1647b is important because it is the tip of the iceberg of a theoretically predicted population of large, long-period circumbinary planets,” Welsh said. “It looks like more than 40 percent of circumbinary planets are in the habitable zones of their stars,” Doyle said. “It seems that the scene from Star Wars where Luke Skywalker is watching the double sunset may not be so rare after all. But physics might be more difficult—everything from shadows to rainbows would come in pairs.” • New Planet Is Largest Discovered Orbiting Two Suns CORRECTION We regret that in our June 16 issue, we inadvertently left out Haleemon Anderson’s byline and Hector Felix photo credit. Bring to a boil and cook until al dente, about 40 minutes. One minute (depending on the size of the asparagus) before the farro is done, add the asparagus to the pot. Drain. 2. While the farro is cooking, make the dressing. Whisk together the grapefruit juice, garlic, mustard and olive oil. Stir in the basil. When the farro is done and while it’s still hot, toss half the dressing with the farro. Taste and season with salt and pepper. Let sit for 10 minutes to allow the flavors of the dressing to absorb. Stir in the cherry tomatoes and arugula along with the remaining dressing. Taste once more and serve. Nutrition Information: Makes 6 (1-cup) servings. Serving size: 1 cup • Servings per recipe: 6 Kill the 9-to-5 by Turning Your Hobby into a Thriving Business (BPT) - A beloved hobby can feel like a mini vacation from everyday life. Whether it’s gardening for relaxation, photography as a creative outlet or computer coding to exercise the brain, hobbies serve as an escape from stress and boredom. What if rather than a hobby being your escape, it was what you did for a career? “When you do what you love, it doesn’t feel likework. However, peopleareintimidatedbythe idea of transitioning a hobby into this type of dream,” says Jim Salmon, vice president of business services at Navy Federal Credit Union. “Becomingasuccessfulentrepreneurdoesn’thave to be difficult with the right drive and passion.” Navy Federal Business Services has helped thousands of people turn their dreams of own- ing a small business into reality by providing expert guidance and financial support through Business Services products. Here are some of Salmon’s expert tips based on best practices he’s observed through his close relationship with entrepreneurial clients: 1. Take your time. Becoming a successful entrepreneur doesn’t mean you have to drop everything and devote all your time to starting a business. In fact, research shows the opposite: People who keep their day jobs while starting companies are a third less likely to fail than those who abandon their full time jobs. Instead, they’re tinkering, research- ing and cautiously testing things out to see if their idea is a viable business venture and if there is a market for their product or service. 2. Set a timeline. Is there a season where it would make sense to testoutyourbusinessventure?Orperhapsthere’s a transitional time in your life where you’ll be looking to open a new chapter. For example, transitioning your hobby into a viable business venture a great option for active duty military personnel and veterans because they naturally begintothinkaboutwhattheirsecondcareerwill be after retiring or leaving the Armed Forces. 3. Decide on time commitment. Decide how much time you are willing to dedicate to your new venture in the beginning. Being an entrepreneur means being your own bosswhichaffordsyouunprecedentedflexibility, but the effort you put in directly effects what you get out. Keep in mind, entrepreneurship isn’t just for full-time professionals. Turning a hobby into a career is a great option for military and stay-at-home parents who require flexibility in regards to working hours and location, but they may have more open time to dedicate to the transition. 4. Create a business plan. Transitioning a hobby into a profession is a lot of fun, but it’s also serious business if you want to be successful. That means creating a business plan that includes goals and plans for attaining them. This will serve as the foundation for how you strategize and build a successful business today. Plus, when it comes time to finance your budding business, a solid business plan will give you a leg up and direction for the future. 5. Find financial backing. Depending on what type of business you want to pursue, you may need some additional fund- ing beyond what you can afford. Establishing a relationship with a financial institution like Navy Federal Credit Union will help you learn more about small business loans and lending products that will help your small business grow. Bring your passion and your business plan - potential investors and financial institu- tions alike will want to see both before they make a decision. The sudden fever, aches, and chills you’re experiencing are unbearable. You crawl into bed, thinking there’s not much you can do.You already feel guilty for bringing the flu home to your kids and spouse. You can try to fight it, but the virus will likely make its way through your household. Right? That’s what the majority of U.S. adults think. According to a recent national survey conducted by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) more than half of U.S. adults (55 percent) incorrectly think that when they get sick, others in the household are bound to get the flu and they just have to wait for the flu virus to pass. The survey also found that almost twice as many U.S. adults call a healthcare professional when their child experiences flu symptoms (46 percent) versus when they personally experience flu symptoms (25 percent). “It’s important for adults to take care of themselves as well as those they care for, including children. The virus does not have to take down your whole family if one person gets sick,” says Dr. William Schaffner, MD, NFID medical director. “There are ways to fight flu. If you see a healthcare professional quickly, they may prescribe prescription flu medicines that may help you get better faster. Your doctor may also prescribe them to prevent others in your household from getting the flu.” “Be proactive when it comes to the flu. It’s the considerate thing to do,” says Lizzie Post, great-great-granddaughter of etiquette guru Emily Post and co-author of Emily Post’s Etiquette 18th edition. “Etiquette is all about consideration. Using basic good etiquette can help keep you and your family flu-free by preventing the virus’ spread.” The Emily Post Institute offers the follow- ing etiquette tips to manage situations where the flu virus could spread: • Know your F.A.C.T.S.: If you’re expe- riencing Fever, Aches, Chills, Tiredness and Sudden Onset, it’s likely flu. Realize that you’re contagious and quickly see a healthcare professional. • Stay home: If you have flu symptoms, it’s okay to cancel plans or take a sick day. The polite thing to do is to stay away from crowds to avoid spreading the virus. Be sure to call your host, or the office to let them know you won’t be able to make it. • Stock up: Keep tissues and hand sanitizers with you at all times. If it’s others who are sick, like that cougher or sneezer next to you, prompt them to protect others by offering a tissue or a spritz of alcohol-based sanitizer. • Hands down. Keep your hands below your shoulders when in public. The idea is to avoid touching your face, which may also help keep you from getting sick after rubbing your nose, mouth or eyes with unclean hands. Lennox Wins Senior Magee Classic Wiseburn Rolls Over Tri Park Article and Photos by Joe Snyder Last week, local District 37 Little League BaseballandSoftballteamsbegantheirAll-Star Tournaments. In last Sunday’s Junior (ages 13-14) Baseball All-Star contest, the contest was long and dragging but it was Wiseburn of Hawthorne that downed Tri Park from El Camino Village, 14-7 last Saturday at Jim Thorpe Park in Hawthorne. In the seven-inning game that lasted nearly three and a half hours, Wiseburn started out with a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the second inning. Tri Park, that includes players from Hawthorne, Lawndale, El CaminoVillage and Gardena, rallied for three runs to tie the game in the bottom of the second. From there, Wiseburn came back with seven unanswered runs for a 10-3 bulge through four innings. Tri Park got as close as four runs but Wiseburn put the game well out of reach with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Perhaps the key blow for Wiseburn was a two-run home run from Cameron Lan in the bottom of the third. That round-tripper gave Wiseburn a 6-3 lead. Wiseburn added four more runs in the fourth to blow the game wide open. Danny Del La Cruz collected three hits in five at-bats and drove in three runs. “Thekidsdidagreatjob,”Wiseburnmanager Josh Cruz said. “The heat got to the players that caused the game to take awhile.” For Tri Park, Amir Lee had a fine game going three-for-four with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Matthew Chavez had a run-scoring double that cut Wiseburn’s lead to 10-6 in the top of the sixth. “We made a lot of errors,” Tri Park manager Oscar Aguilar said. “It cost us about five or six runs.” Wiseburn played in the second round of the winner’s bracket against Lawndale, which defeated Lennox in the first round, last Sunday at Thorpe Park. Tri Park played in the loser’s bracket against Lennox. The tournament lasted, at least, through Wednesday but, if necessary, a second championship game will be played Friday at 7 p.m. at Thorpe Park. Lennox Wins 50-70 Opener The Lennox 50-70 (ages 11-13) Little The Lennox Senior Little League (ages 15-16) Twins captured the Carl Magee, Jr. Tournament of Champions title by shutting out the Tri Park Bluejays 4-0 on June 12 at Jim Thorpe Park. Winning pitcher went the distance allowing six hits. He struck out seven batters and walked just one. Devin Garza supplied the entire offense for the Twins. He hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning. In the fifth, he drove in Salvador Mercado with a base hit. CIF-SS Announces New Football Playoff FormaT For many years, the CIF-Southern Section football playoffs have been played depending on the strength of leagues with the average enrollments of high schools. Things are different, today. The level of talents in the WiseburnbaserunnerCameronLaninchespastsecondbaseinlastSaturday’sDistrict37JuniorLittleLeagueAll-StarBaseballTournament play. Lan had a home run. high school sports are more extreme with top athletes choosing certain high schools, instead of staying with local ones. As a result, the Southern Section Committee is going by the individual school talent, instead of the leagues. Over the past two seasons, the Bay, Ocean and Pioneer Leagues played in the Western Division, which was classified as DivisionVII. One local school moving up from Division VII to Division VI will be Lawndale, which would have won the Ocean League last season but had to forfeit four wins, including two in league, due to use of an ineligible player. The Cardinals will play in that division with the likes of Manhattan Beach, Mira Costa and Pioneer League power West Torrance. Inglewood and Morningside go down to Division IX. Leuzinger and Inglewood will vie in Division X. Hawthorne, which struggled over the past several seasons, goes to Division XII. There are still a total of 13 divisions in the Southern Section 11-man football with Division I, formerly the PAC Five, being the most highly prestigious division. One of the teams in that division will be Serra High of Gardena, which was eliminated by Santa Ana Mater Dei in the quarterfinals last season. Centennial High of Corona won the PAC Five last year but lost to Concord De La Salle in the California State Open Division final. • C e r t i f i e d a n d L i c e n s e d P r o f e s s i o n a l s painting plumbing Full Service Plumbing • Heating • Cooling Sewer Video Inspection • Rooter Service • Copper Repipes 310-543-2001 24 Hour Service Since 1990 • Lic # 770059 • C-42 C-36 C-34 C20 A Free Estimates PLUMBING, HEATING & COOLING RICH’S PAINTING Specializing in exterior Quality interior work Reliable • Reasonable Rates 310-640-9465 PAINTERSPLUS INTERIOR • EXTERIOR PLUS IMPROVEMENTS • REPAIRS FREE ESTIMATES LOWEST PRICES • GUARANTEED QUALITY 5 YEAR FREE MAINTENANCE SERVING THE BEACH CITIES FOR OVER 20 YEARS CALL DON 310-798-0450LIC # 726089 painting BILL’S HOME & APARTMENT MAINTENANCE CONTRACTOR QUALITY at Handyman Prices. This agreement will also cover services for any Hawthorne School District student that is referred, including sixth and seventh grade students. “The Services shall be furnished on the premises of public school location(s) established by the HSD [Hawthorne School District] and mutually agreed by HKI [Helen Keller International] and HSD to be appropriate for the services offered,” states the agreement attached to the board agenda. “The services shall be delivered on days and times mutually agreed to by both parties.” This is a renewal of existing agreement and establishes the rates of service at $3.50 per student. It is estimated that these vision care services will reach 1,100 of the district’s eighth grade students. In addition, HKI is committed to providing an estimated 250 children with prescription eyeglasses [to students referred to ChildSight® on the initial vision screening completed by ChildSight® or the school nurse], free of charge to the district or students served through the agreement. ChildSight® provides vision screenings and prescription glasses to children in impoverished communities in California, as well as states like Connecticut, New Jersey, NewYork and Ohio. By working directly with school administrators and nurses, ChildSight® staff is able to provide high-quality screenings, which in turn allows a licensed optometrist to prescribe adequate eyeglasses for kids in need of vision correction.  “Optometrists with whom HKI contracts shall present HSD with an original Certificate of Insurance evidencing insurance coverage for general liability, workman’s compensation and medical malpractice, in the amounts required by the HSD,” states the agreement. The agreement will take effect Aug. 1 and is set to expire June 30, 2017, unless renewal occurs via the approval of an amendment by both HSD and HKI. HKI, which was founded in 1915, spearheads a worldwide effort to save the sight and lives of disadvantaged people. By establishing a wide-range of programs based on research and evidence in vision, health and nutrition, HKI continues to fight the causes and effects of blindness and malnutrition. At the moment there are more than 120 programs in 21 countries in Africa, Asia and the United States dedicated to helping save people’s vision. “Helen Keller International also reaches tens of thousands of underserved youth in the United States each year through ChildSight®,” states the HKI website [http://www.hki.org/about-us]. “This unique program provides free vision screenings and prescription eyeglasses to students living in poverty.” HKI’s work provides communities, who otherwise would never be able to afford such services, cataract surgeries, vision correction, vitaminA supplements, screening and treatment for diabetic retinopathy, as well as providing treatments and cures for overlooked tropical diseases. Part of the mission for HKI is reducing malnutrition via the spread of efforts tailored to improving nutrition practices for families such as maternal and child nutrition education, by reinforcing staple foods considered to be rich in essential nutrients, as well as promoting “globally recognized family-led agricultural programs and community-based management of acute malnutrition.” For the agreement with the HSD, HKI takes full responsibility in providing, maintaining and insuring all equipment to be used in the providing of its services. “HKI employees, representatives, contractors and agents will report suspected child abuse or neglect if he/she knows or has reasonable cause to believe or suspect an incident,” states the agreement. All students’ personal information collected during the vision screenings will remain confidential. The District will disseminate information to parents regarding the vision screening services and all relevant dates. Hawthorne Education Foundation Ready for 12th Annual Golf Tournament The 12th Annual Hawthorne Education Foundation Golf Tournament will tee off on Monday, June 27 at Chester Washington Golf Course, located at 1930 W. 120th St. in Los Angeles. • 8. Page 8 June 23, 2016 Purrrfect Companions Have a great start to your summer when you adopt your purr-fect match. Naomi is a total lap kitty who rolls over to give you her tummy. She is just 2 years young and ready for a home of her own now that her kittens are weaned. Naomi is fine all by herself while you are at work, but loves it when you return home! She enjoys interaction with you as she plays with string and wand toys. Soft and fluffy, she is not as big as appears and weighs only 8 ½ pounds.  Naomi is not good with other cats or dogs and will be happy to be the only cat unless you adopt her with one of her kittens - Gru, Lydia, or Bob. This dashing young boy just loves to be held! So much so, that sometimes Bob would rather cuddle than play.  He is a character! Bob is rough-and-tumble, but smart, affectionate and playful.  And boy does he like attention!  Bob is courteous when meeting new cats or kittens and he needs to have one for a friend. He is good with cats and ok with children eight or older and friendly calm dogs. Welcome this little guy into your life for a forever friend. Lydia is the perfect kitten! She is a balance ofspunkinessandsoftness. Herbeautifulfluffy fur will need regular brushing to keep her adorable appearance. She has a confidence about her that makes her what we call “plug and play”.  It means she will do well in many situations. Lydia does wonderfully with older children, friendly dogs and other kitties. This girl is kissable sweet! Gru is so special that he can steal your heart just by reaching out to you with one of his big white “gloved” paws.  He is full of fearless curiosity and energy.  This super smart boy is so responsive that he will come These kitties are available for adoption through Kitten Rescue, one of the largest cat rescue groups in Southern California. All of our kitties are spayed/neutered, microchipped, tested for FeLV and FIV, dewormed and current on their vaccinations. For additional information and to see these or our other kittens and cats, please check our website www.kittenrescue.org or email us at mail@ kittenrescue.org.Yourtaxdeductibledonations for the rescue and care of our cats and kittens can be made through our website or by sending a check payable to Kitten Rescue, 914 Westwood Blvd. #583, Los Angeles, CA 90024. when you call him “baby.” Gru will provide you with endless entertainment even though he is not the cuddliest kitten. He just doesn’t have time for that! Gru loves to play with other kitties. He is good with older children and friendly dogs, and simply loves other cats. Jade and her sister Emerald were found by a Good Samaritan when they were just days old after someone had thrown them away in a trash can. They went to an expert bottle feeder, where they thrived.  Because these sisters were bottle fed, Emerald and Jade are incredibly outgoing, love people and are super affectionate.  They would be great for gentle children, or in a busy household. Emerald and Jade get along with other kitties, but have a very strong adverse reaction to dogs. It is possible that they might adjust to a dog who leaves them alone, but they definitely do not want to interact with one. These girls would adore finding a home together, even with other kittens in their foster home they tend to gravitate to each other.  They absolutely cannot be an only kitty in the home, they are too young and need a playful companion to wrestle, chew and romp with. Powder is a high-energy alpha cat who is just over a year old. He is almost all white with his gray face and tail with beautiful grayish green eyes. This cool cat loves to be the center of attention, is curious and always eager to learn.  Powder plays with a huge dog and is respected by all the other kitties. He’s not much of a talker, but does purr really loud.  Powder is a very loving boy who likes to be held. He is totally ready for his forever home. To be happy, Powder needs to be adopted with another feline or have a feline friend at his new home.  Lydia Gru Powder Naomi Jade Emerald On Saturdays, we have adoptions from noon to 3:30 p.m. in Westchester at 8655 Lincoln Blvd. just south of Manchester Ave. and also in Mar Vista at 3860 Centinela Ave, just south of Venice Boulevard. Our website lists additional adoption sites and directions to each location. • Saving one animal won’t change the world, but the world will surely change for that animal.
