DECRIPTION AND CHARACTERISTICS:
Oregano is a genus of perennial herb from the mint family (Lamiaceae), with intense taste and
aroma; it is perennial, with a life of 5 to 10 years, and it comes from USA, Mexico, Italy and France.
Their leaves are oval, 0,5 to 1,5 cm tall, that, when dried, turn into a light green color; it has an
erect stalk covered by hair.
The plant size is 35 to 45 cm tall, depending on the climate and soil fertility.
In Europe and America, it is cultivated because of its young leaves, very aromatic, used fresh or
dried, as a condiment. The flowers, from red purple to rose, are agrupated in spikes, they have
calyx (external floral wrap) with five teeth and bilabiated corolla (internal floral wrap), two or
three stamen (male floral parts) and only one pistil (female floral part). The fruit is an achene
(dried and with only one seed).
Oregano is perennial and it is used in the cookery as a condiment. In Medicine, it is used because
of its digestive, stimulating and expectorant tonical properties.
