4. "Study, through the press, on renewable energy in Extremadura".
Our students worked on the importance of renewable energies in the region. Weekly they
reviewed, selected and archived news appearing in newspapers.
They have seen what type of renewable energy is being given further impetus, how and
where it is being used and what types of financial aid received.
They have learnt to research on the benefits of them and the environmental impacts of
some projects.
They can also know the efforts being undertaken to curb the non payment of production
bonus to new renewable energy facilities and how this will affect all projects that are
underway and those who had expected.
6. CONCLUSIONS OF THE STUDY ON RENEWABLE ENERGY IN
EXTREMADURA
In Extremadura there are important hydroelectric power plants. Examples are
the hydroelectric power stations in Alcántara (Cáceres), García de Sola
(Badajoz), Zújar (Badajoz), Cíjara (Badajoz), Orellana (Badajoz), la Serena
(Badajoz), Gabriel y Galán (Cáceres), etc ...
Photovoltaic energy is the most developed in Extremadura. We have 442 solar
power plants in operation and 448 new projects.
Regarding the thermal power plants, there are 6 plants in operation, 13 under
construction 13 and 60 projects.
Wind farms in our region can be seen also affected by the temporary
suspension of finacial aids. We already have 97 parks approved.
The big bet is biomass energy, with the use of forest residues. There are
already two plants in service and 21 new projects.
We have two cogenaración plants (producing electricity and thermal energy)
in operation and a biogas plant (electricity production from gas from organic
waste).
7. CONCLUSIONS ON THE STUDY OF RENEWABLE ENERGY IN
EXTREMADURA
In recent months, Extremadura is suffering the non-payment of
premiums for renewable energy production and a freeze on new
projects.
The implementation of these energies, especially solar photovoltaic and
thermo solar, had generated great expectations for the future.
Installing renewable energy projects is expensive, although the
development of new technologies is lowering prices.
It is necessary to devise a clear and stable strategy for the sector to
make energy policy a priority in which everyone works to achieve a
consensus that provides security and stability to the sector.
9. OUTSTANDING NEWS
AQUAPHYTEX S.L. is cutting-edge technology, a European leader in
the field of biotechnological production, installation and maintenance
of plant material used in wastewater treatment systems. A pioneer in
phytodepuration and water purification. This is an innovative and
dynamic company with a large production capacity.
AQUAPHYTEX offers a natural alternative to conventional
wastewater treatments based in physicochemical systems that entail
very high costs, complex maintenance and environmental impacts. We
have a multidisciplinary team with wide experience able to undertake
any projects and to offer a full-service technical consultancy in our
field.
10. AQUAPHYTEX starts as a project in 2003 in Extremadura (Spain). It
became a society in 2005, after two years of research in growth and
development of vegetal species for phytodepuration.
AQUAPHYTEX is born in Extremadura in the context of the Sociedad de
la Imaginación (Imagination Society), a movement that encourages
entrepreneurship among citizens willing to crystallize their innovative
ideas.
In an international level, AQUAPHYTEX belongs to the Nueva Cultura
Mundial de la Gestión del Agua movement (New Worlwide Culture of
Water Management) that supports sustainability of the limited planet’s
resources. Also, AQUAPHYTEX collaborates periodically in technology
transfer activities with the United Nations Industrial Development
Organisation (UNIDO) in Paris.
Its young founder and CEO, Pedro Delgado, analyzed problems related to
conventional wastewater treatment systems and focused his researches in
biotechnology applied to wastewater treatments.
This motivated and engaged entrepreneur gave up his studies in his junior
year in high school to accomplish his dream of providing a natural,
sustainable and within everybody's reach system using the Hidrolution
FMF Technology. This was possible thanks to support he received from
Javier and Pablo Riesco, and Vicente Torres, father of this technology.
He has been granted with important national and international awards.

AWARENESS CAMPAIGN "
“ ¿AHORROOR DERROCHE?”
"SAVING O WASTING?”
This survey is about a very obvious point. The surveyed
students had no doubts about actions which result in savings or
wasting.
The purpose was to raise awareness among pupils of the
excessive spending of the natural resources and think about
our daily habits.
If we all know what to do to save energy and resources,
why do we waste so much?
We came to the conclusion that the key to improve is in the
following words: reduce, reuse, recycle.

23. VISIT TO MERIDA RECYCLING PLANT
On 26th April a group of students had the opportunity to visit the
Ecopark of Merida, a modern recycling plant which aims to promote
the reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery of municipal solid
waste.
They could see the various buildings that make up the plant and
how it works differently in each, taking into account the different
processes and treatments that require each type of waste.
The purpose of this visit was framed within the plan we had
proposed at the beginning of the academic year. The results of the
visit and the evaluation of the activity has been extremely positive.
24. DEMONSTRATION OF SOME EXPERIMENTS IN THE CLASSROOM
Like many conductors, a lemon can conduct electricity through a simple
chemical reaction.
It is actually pretty simple and straightforward to understand how the juice in
lemons produce electricity:
Lemon juice is highly concentrated with citric acid, which gives the fruit a bitter
taste, but also makes it a great conductor of electricity.
Citric acid is very easily able to chemically bond with metals and a chemical
reaction is thus simple to produce.
Through a process known as oxidation-reduction, the metals and the citric acid
in the lemon juice will form a reaction with the end result of an electric current.
