2. World War Two finally ended in August
of 1945.
Life in the United States began to
return to normal.
Soldiers began to come home and find
jobs.
Factories stopped producing war
materials and began to produce goods
for peacetime.

4. Business was quickly developing.
There were plenty of goods to buy, and
most Americans could afford to buy them
New industries, new products, new towns
appeared during these years.
By 1960 94% of Americans who wanted a
job had one.
Many peoples worked in the city and lived
in the suburbs.
5. At the same time, other changes
began to take place in society.
Many Americans were no longer
satisfied with their old ways of life.
They wanted something new and
better. And many were now earning
enough money to find that better
life.

7. Millions of Americans moved out of
cities and small towns. They bought
newly built homes in suburban
communities outside busy cities.
Today, we look at the growth of suburbs
and other changes in the American
population in the years after World War
Two.

9. Television
During the 1950’s more and more people
began to watch television.
90% of American families had TV sets.
People were spending more and more time
watching TV.
Television brought man interesting and
entertaining shows into American living
rooms.
The evening news was like a living
newspaper.

11. The United States counts its population
every 10 years.
The first census took place in 1790. At that
time, the country had about 4 million
people.
100 years later, in 1890, the population was
63 million.
By 1950, there were more than 150 million
people living in the United States.
