2. Hospital
Hospital managers will be able to use infection-control
and bed-management applications that compute
standard hospital data streams, allowing them to better
control outbreaks, allocate resources and plan ahead.
Devices
Devices that capture
health data, such as blood
pressure, blood glucose
and ECG will connect
directly to the portal.
Pharmacy
Patients can order repeat
prescriptions and access
drug-specific information.
API
A premium Application
Programming Interface
(API) service
Healthcare records can
be shared between
primary and
secondary care,
facilitating continuity
of care and follow-up.
GP Practice
Through their clinical dashboard,
doctors will be able to view their
patients' medical records and health
data, access diagnostic aids, staging
tools and assessment applications all integrated with the latest evidence
sources and NICE guidance.
Patients will have control over
what information is stored and
what others may see.
Patients can then share their health information with their
doctors and carers, enabling improved coordination of
care. They can also message their doctors securely.
Helping to improve quality, stimulate
innovation, increase productivity and
prioritise prevention
An eHealth portal for patients and healthcare professionals that
integrates with the NHS IT infrastructure and supports an unlimited

4. Intelligent Healthcare
Unlocking the power of data
Engage 2012
Brussels
Embracing intelligent healthcare. A dialogue
among leading healthcare stakeholders
December 2012
(date to be confirmed)
To be intelligent, healthcare systems need good data
translated into effective knowledge that is
disseminated to those who need to know. However,
today's healthcare systems are far from being in that
happy position.
The collection of healthcare data is an ineffective
process. Language proves a big barrier. Standards
vary across Europe. Important data may be ignored
such as patient experiences of their treatment. Other
forms of data, notably personal medical records, are
not shared (despite guarantees of anonymity), so
decisions about intelligent healthcare investments
cannot be made. Then there is the fact that not all
healthcare data are transparent or shared
appropriately. Patients in one country
have access to information that people
in neighbouring countries do not.
The entire process of data
gathering, storing and
distribution is poorly regulated.
Sometimes requirements are
too onerous and bureaucratic,
such as with the clinical trial
process. In other situations
such as Health Apps for
smart phones regulation is
just beginning.
Given this cacophony how
can healthcare systems unlock
the power of data and become
more knowledgeable and
effective?
