1. Suggestions for rewriting sentences reported speech
These are some useful guidelines for rewriting a sentence in indirect speech. When you can
do this comfortably, you will also be able to do the reverse - rewriting a sentence in direct
speech. Copy the following checklist into your notebooks and use it as you do the exercises.
1. Have I checked the new subject?
2. Does the reporting verb need an object and if so, which one?
3. Have I changed the tense of the verb correctly?
4. Are there any time expressions, places, etc. that must be changed?
5. Did I remember that in indirect questions, ordinary question structures are not used?
Example:
“Have you ever been to China before?”
The customs officer asked me whether I had been to Chine before.
