2. Origin of name
The word "Halloween" is used for the first time in
the sixteenth century, and comes from a Scottish
variation of the phrase "All Hallows' Even" which
means "All Saints Eve".

house to house, disguised,
asking for gifts as candy or
money, sometimes, with
the question, "Trick or

The Halloween costumes
are traditionally the
monsters, ghosts, skeletons,
witches and devils.
Dressing up in costumes
and going "guising" was
prevalent in Ireland and
Scotland at Halloween in
the 19th century. The
costumes became popular
for Halloween parties in the
USA in the 20th century.
