TITULO 1.
For more than 50 years women have been living under the idea of a perfect doll,
which is beautiful and can do everything, known as Barbie. Us, women, had the idea of
Barbie as a role model, as the perfect girl, with the beautiful body and beautiful face. But,
what do we actually know about how it affects on girls and women self-esteem? Barbie
has negative effects on girls, as it provokes an unrealistic expectation of our body. There
are so many women that each day goes to the surgeon to get the “ideal Barbie-Doll body¨.
It is estimated that girls have their first Barbie doll at the age of three. From that
moment on their image of how a woman should look like starts to change. Each time a
new Barbie gets introduced to the market, girls go crazy to buy the newest and most
beautiful doll ever. Once they start growing up, they have the idea of a perfect body as
how a Barbie is. If you ever had a Barbie, this would sound very familiar to you, we all
woke up one day wishing to look like a doll.
Subtitle:
Although Barbie creation was not intended to have these consequences as
mentioned before, it does. Once this doll was shown to the world as beautiful, soft,
delicate, skinny, tall, feminine, maternal, and marvelous woman, woman gender roles
completely changed. Nowadays, the ideal woman is based and compared on how Barbie
looks like. But it´s not Barbie itself what sets feminine stereotype. Advertising has a lot of
influence on this too, because it sells Barbie as the most beautiful woman around. As we
can see in all Barbie TV commercials, there are beautiful young girls having a blast with
this doll and showing all the great things she can do. Can you imagine what would the

media be without those gorgeous runway models standing there to make a good
impression to the audience? Barbie has set a standard for the media to show models that
looks like this gorgeous and marvelous doll, provoking women to feel self-conscious of
their bodies. Would the media show more realistically proportioned women if Barbie had
never existed? It would change how the media began to market women and models. With
the use of advertising, we can see clearly how they sell this beautiful doll image in order to
get more incomes.

Negative Effects of Barbie.
All this stereotyping are set by people in society,
who by seeing this beautiful and skinny doll get the
conclusion that every girl in order to be beautiful should look like a doll. Well, that is
actually impossible, given that Barbie proportions brought up to real life are unreal.
According to a research made by Huff Post College, if Barbie were an actual woman, she
would be 5'9" tall, have a 39" bust, an 18" waist, 33" hips, a
size 3 shoe and would weight 110lbs. According to
Boston University student K. Wysocki: "Barbie's neck is
twice as long as the average human's which would make it
impossible to hold up her head (...) Barbie's legs are
50% longer than her arms, whereas the average
woman's legs are only 20% longer than her arms (…) If a
woman had the same measurements as Barbie, she
would not have enough body fat to menstruate (and obviously to have
children)". This means that even if she existed, she would have so many problems, that
wouldn’t make her as perfect as people picture her to be.
Despite all these negative things, this doll also has positive aspects. She has so
many careers, many of them are consisting to men, and so this encourages girls to go for
what they want. Maybe if Barbie had a more realistic proportional body and seems to be
less superficial, she may have a positive immediate effect on young girls and could provide
a healthy body image and sense of female power.

All these effects that Barbie’s brought are
called Barbie Syndrome, which according to
Wikipedia, is defined as: ¨the desire to have a
physical appearance and lifestyle representative
of the Barbie doll. It is most often associated with
pre-teen and adolescent females but is applicable to any age group. A person with Barbie
syndrome attempts to emulate the doll's physical appearance, even though the doll has
unattainable body proportions¨. This is related to what advertising of Barbie and the set of
a stereotype based on a Barbie can cause.
Trabajo Practico N°1.
9
The Scary Reality.
Heidi Montag, an actress of the Mtv show The Hills, had the
Barbie Syndrome. She just has 25 years old and already got into
more than 10 surgeries with the idea to look like a doll. like a doll.
She admitted to be addicted to the idea of a perfect body.
The slogan ¨It´s all about Barbie¨ is shown in most of Barbie
commercials, this reflects how Barbie use advertising as a way to
get involved in people daily life, meaning as everything that surround
us is about Barbie. This slogan affects on people, as we start relating everything to this
doll.
Considering everything said in this article, the solution for this trauma and influence
caused by this doll, would be letting young girls know that it is just a doll, just a simple toy.
And from the moment they just had their first Barbie, introduce to themselves the idea that
they don’t have to be skinny, blond, blue eyes, etcetera to be beautiful. Barbie have to be
a good influence on girls as a role model, not a bad influence. We can consider her jobs,
her image of a powerful woman and as an image of someone who can do everything, but
not as a physical role model. She should be remembered for her psychological gender
role, nor her physical. It depends on each one of us to make this Barbie Syndrome stop.

With the use of advertising, we can see clearly how they sell this beautiful doll image in order to get more incomes.

  • 7. Trabajo Practico N°1. 7 Negative Effects of Barbie. All this stereotyping are set by people in society, who by seeing this beautiful and skinny doll get the conclusion that every girl in order to be beautiful should look like a doll. Well, that is actually impossible, given that Barbie proportions brought up to real life are unreal. According to a research made by Huff Post College, if Barbie were an actual woman, she would be 5'9" tall, have a 39" bust, an 18" waist, 33" hips, a size 3 shoe and would weight 110lbs. According to Boston University student K. Wysocki: "Barbie's neck is twice as long as the average human's which would make it impossible to hold up her head (...) Barbie's legs are 50% longer than her arms, whereas the average woman's legs are only 20% longer than her arms (…) If a woman had the same measurements as Barbie, she would not have enough body fat to menstruate (and obviously to have children)". This means that even if she existed, she would have so many problems, that wouldn’t make her as perfect as people picture her to be. Despite all these negative things, this doll also has positive aspects. She has so many careers, many of them are consisting to men, and so this encourages girls to go for what they want. Maybe if Barbie had a more realistic proportional body and seems to be less superficial, she may have a positive immediate effect on young girls and could provide a healthy body image and sense of female power. -Soy un hada; prometo concederles las tres primeras cosas que deseen; pero tengan cuidado: después de haber deseado tres cosas, no les concederé nada más.
  • 8. Trabajo Practico N°1. 8 All these effects that Barbie’s brought are called Barbie Syndrome, which according to Wikipedia, is defined as: ¨the desire to have a physical appearance and lifestyle representative of the Barbie doll. It is most often associated with pre-teen and adolescent females but is applicable to any age group. A person with Barbie syndrome attempts to emulate the doll's physical appearance, even though the doll has unattainable body proportions¨. This is related to what advertising of Barbie and the set of a stereotype based on a Barbie can cause.
  • 9. Trabajo Practico N°1. 9 The Scary Reality. Heidi Montag, an actress of the Mtv show The Hills, had the Barbie Syndrome. She just has 25 years old and already got into more than 10 surgeries with the idea to look like a doll. like a doll. She admitted to be addicted to the idea of a perfect body. The slogan ¨It´s all about Barbie¨ is shown in most of Barbie commercials, this reflects how Barbie use advertising as a way to get involved in people daily life, meaning as everything that surround us is about Barbie. This slogan affects on people, as we start relating everything to this doll. Considering everything said in this article, the solution for this trauma and influence caused by this doll, would be letting young girls know that it is just a doll, just a simple toy. And from the moment they just had their first Barbie, introduce to themselves the idea that they don’t have to be skinny, blond, blue eyes, etcetera to be beautiful. Barbie have to be a good influence on girls as a role model, not a bad influence. We can consider her jobs, her image of a powerful woman and as an image of someone who can do everything, but not as a physical role model. She should be remembered for her psychological gender role, nor her physical. It depends on each one of us to make this Barbie Syndrome stop. JUSTO ME LEVANTO CUANDO EL RUIDO HA CESADO. PIENSO SOBRE LAS COSAS QUE HAY QUE REALIZAR EL DÍA DE HOY. TAREA, DIBUJOS, CHECAR MAIL, CUMPLIR CON EL SERVICIO, UNA CITA CON LOS AMIGOS, LIMPIAR MI CUARTO, LEER, APRENDER UN PROGRAMA, DESAYUNAR, ESCRIBIR EN EL BLOG, BAÑARME, PINTAR, COMPRAR AEROSOLES… DE TODAS ESAS COSAS ESTOY SEGURO QUÉ HARÉ SÓLO UNAS CUANTAS POR OBLIGACIÓN Y OTRAS POR DIVERTIMENTO.
