15. STORIES ABOUT BIRTH
THE FULL MOON AND THE CHILDREN – LA LUNA PIENA E I BAMBINI
By class 2 - Primary School in Campli
About a hundred years ago, in a
small town of Campli, all young
children slept in their parents’ room
because in the morning, after a full
moon night, were found pale, tired,
with scratches and bruises.
Circa 100 anni fa, in una piccola città
di Campli, tutti i bambini dormivano
nella stanza dei genitori poiché la
mattina, dopo una notte di luna
piena, erano pallidi, stanchi, con
graffi e lividi.
In a full moon night, Adelina,
Menichetta’s mother, was awakened
by strange and loud noises coming
from the kitchen: rocking of the
cradle, dishes on the floor, doors
slamming.
In una notte di luna piena, Adelina,
la mamma di Menichetta, fu
svegliata da strani e forti rumori
provenienti dalla cucina: il dondolio
della culla, piatti a terra, porte che
sbattevano.
Mother Adelina, frightened, took a
pitchfork, went out and gathered the
villagers.
Mamma Adelina, spaventata, prese
un forcone, uscì e radunò I paesani.
89
16. In the moonlight, she saw a white
bird flying low and alighted at the
door of her house.
Al chiaro di luna, vide un bianco
uccello volare e in fiamme alla porta
della sua casa.
Mother Adelina chased it and hit it
with a pitchfork, but she missed it
because the bird turned into a cat,
then into a duck, then disappeared.
Mamma Adelina lo inseguì e colpì
col forcone, ma lo mancò perché si
trasformò in un gatto, poi in
un’anatra, quindi sparì.
Adelina spoke of what had happened
with her friends in the village and all
together saw Mrs Nunziata, a
woman dressed in white coming
from the mountain.
90
17. In the next day, while she was going to
the church, Lisetta, the godmother,
told Adelina that she had seen
Nunziata with a black eye and a
broken arm. THE WITCH HAD BEEN
DISCOVERED! From now she would
never able to transform and take the
kids.
Il giorno dopo, andando in chiesa, la
madrina Lisetta disse ad Adelina che
aveva visto Nunziata con un occhio
nero e un braccio rotto. LA STREGA
ERA STATA SCOPERTA! Da questo
momento, non avrebbe più potuto
trasformare e prendere i bambini.
Few days later, to avert the danger
forever, all the parents brought the
children under a large walnut tree and
turned it around 9 times singing this
nursery rhyme: “WITCH GO AWAY, DO
NOT GET ANY CLOSER, DIE IN A FIRE
BURNED ALONG WITH OUR
CLOTHING”
PANNI NOSTRI”.
91
18. Children were stripped and their
clothes burnt. The ash was covered
with earth.
I bambini furono svestiti e i loro
vestiti bruciati. La cenere fu coperta
con la terra.
When the ritual was finished, the
children wore new clothes.
Quando il rito fu finito, i bambini
indossarono nuovi vestiti.
Finally, everyone went back home,
taking care not to walk the same
road.
Infine, ciascuno tornò nelle proprie
case, stando attenti a non percorrere
la stessa strada.

19. BREAST MILK – IL LATTE MATERNO
By class 4A and class 4B –Primary School in S. Onofrio
Near Corropoli, a small village in the
north part of Teramo, every year, on
February 10th, Saint Scolastica’s Day,
pregnant women, single women and
young couples go to the small church
entitled to Saint Scolastica and drink
some water from the near miraculous
fountain.
In Abruzzo, Saint Scolastica is the
patroness of breast milk.
Vicino Corropoli, un piccolo paese nella
parte nord della Provincia di Teramo,
ogni anno, il 10 febbraio, giorno di Santa
Scolastica, donne incinte, nubili e giovani
fonte miracolosa.
In Abruzzo, Santa Scolastica è la patrona
del latte materno.
Women go round the Church three
times with a stone in their hands,
saying a prayer: people say that this
ritual helps them have more breast
milk and a fertile and happy wedding.
Le donne fanno tre giri intorno alla
chiesa reggendo in mano una pietra e
recitando una preghiera: c’è la
credenza che tale rito aiuti ad
ottenere abbondanza di latte e un
matrimonio fecondo e felice.
93
20. In Schiavi d’Abruzzo (CH) the patron’s
name is Saint Felice. A fountain called
“milky spring” is dedicated to him.
Women, who cannot breastfeed,
come here to drink its water. After
drinking, the women leave a bit of
bread and who arrives later has to eat
it with water, and leave it again.
A Schiavi d’Abruzzo (CH) il patrono è
San Felice, al quale è dedicata una
fontana chiamata “fonte lattiera”. Le
donne che non possono allattare
vengono qui a bere l’acqua. Dopo
In Campli, in the church of Saint Mary
in Platea, we can see the beautiful
picture of “Our Milk Lady” who
portrays Mary while she is
breastfeeding Jesus, who is sitting on
her hand.
A Campli, nella chiesa di Santa Maria
in Platea, possiamo vedere il bel
dipinto della “Madonna del Latte” che
raffigura Maria nell’atto di allattare il
Bambino Gesù seduto sulla sua mano.

21. Beliefs about Birth and Pregnant Women- Credenze sulla nascita e sulle
donne incinte
By class 3 - Primary School in Campovalano and class 2-Primary School in Campli
When a woman was pregnant, she had
to be careful: she was subjective to envy
and evil forces.
Quando una donna aspettava un
bambino, doveva stare molto attenta: in
quel periodo era più soggetta alle invidie
ed alle forze malefiche.
Before giving birth the woman should
not go under a ladder, did not have to
cross a rope or wear stranded, or the
birth would have complications: the cord
could have been tangling.
Prima del parto la donna non doveva
passare sotto ad una scala, non doveva
accavallare corde o portare addosso fili
intrecciati, altrimenti il parto avrebbe
avuto complicazioni: si sarebbe
aggrovigliato il cordone ombelicale.
The pregnant woman should eat for two;
if she wanted to eat some food should
not touch herself to avoid the
appearance of skin blemishes that would
have also spotted the baby’s skin.
La donna incinta doveva mangiare per
due; se vedeva qualche cibo che le
veniva offerto e se desiderava qualcosa,
non doveva toccarsi per evitare le voglie,
che poi avrebbero macchiato la pelle del
bambino.
Look at the shape of the mother’s belly to
determine the baby’s sex: If the belly is
pointed she will have a male, round a
female.
It was believed that immediately after giving
95
birth, the mother and the baby
22. could be vulnerable and could be influenced
by dark forces, so they used amulets to ward
off bad luck.
If the child was born with the placenta, they
believe he was lucky.
Baptism was to be held within 8 days after
birth and a little light burnt in the child’s
room.
Gifts for the baby were: gold necklace with a
medal, bracelet or brooch for his bib.
Si regalavano: catenina d’oro con
medaglietta, braccialetto o spilla per
bavaglino.
The child could not leave the house without
being baptize.
He could not be dressed by two different
people.
Non poteva essere vestito da due persone
diverse.
His clothes, that were put out to dry, were
brought home before sunset, otherwise the
witches could take them
96
23. During pregnancy the mother should avoid
eating eel, otherwise the child could
drown.
Durante la gravidanza, la futura mamma
doveva evitare alcuni cibi, come ad es.
l’anguilla, altrimenti il bambino poteva
morire annegato.
The house owner prepared everything was
needed for the birth: hot water, clean linen
cloths, and recited a prayer to S. Anne,
patron of pregnant women and infants.
The baby’s layette was prepared after the
sixth months of pregnancy.
Il corredino del neonato veniva preparato
dopo il sesto mese di gravidanza.
After giving birth the woman could not
leave the house for 40 days and did not
participate in the baptism.
She could not touch the water, eat the
chicken broth, homemade pasta and had
to drink beer that would help the
production of her milk
97
24. When the mother was breastfeeding, no one
could leave the room because the baby’s
milk would go away.
Quando la mamma allattava nessuno
poteva uscire dalla stanza perché si credeva
che portasse via il latte al bambino.
They did not cut the child’s hair and nails
before a year otherwise he would become a
thief.
You could not kiss him on the neck because
he could lose sleep.
The child could not look in the mirror.
Non si poteva neanche specchiare.
Two small children should not touch each
other or they would not have spoken.
Due bimbi piccoli non potevano toccarsi:
non avrebbero parlato.
If a baby cut his teeth early, he would have
soon a brother and if he had a pigtail, it
meant that the next baby would have the
same sex.
If the mother’s face was stained
with dark spots would give birth to a male, if
her face was smooth, a female.
