COMMITTEE: MAGNET SCHOOLS
• Purpose: The purpose of the committee is to
make recommendations to the
Superintendent regarding current and future
magnet programs in VUSD.

5. SUMMARY OF COMMITTEE WORK -
UPDATE
• Survey was developed for magnet school
teachers, students and parents to gather data
on current magnet stakeholder perceptions of
their school
• Results were analyzed by the committee and
summary statements shared for each of the
magnet schools: Casita, VAVPA, Vista Magnet
MS, Mission Vista HS
• Based upon survey data, next steps were
suggested for each of the four current magnet
schools
6. COMMITTEE WORK - UPDATE
• District wide survey was developed by sub-
committee to gather input on a possible magnet
theme for the Washington Middle School, reviewed
by the committee, and mailed home to K-8 families
in English and Spanish and made available online to
K-12 families. Connect Ed call made to families.
7. COMMITTEE WORK - UPDATE
• Survey raw data was compiled for the
committee’s review:
76% parents indicated they would move their child to a
magnet school
445 responses to survey – 2% response
• Using survey data as part of the
process, committee discussed and
unanimously approved a recommendation
to the Superintendent

13. RECOMMENDATION
• Respectfully request approval for three magnet
pathways:
• STEM
• Arts/Design
• International Baccalaureate
• Respectfully request approval to specifically identify
focus area for Washington Middle School to be
“Innovation and Design”
