1. Settlement in Spain
• 1- Dispersed settlements are located
in the North of Spain
• 2-Nucleated settlements are
predominant in rural areas. However
, there are differences depending on
the geographical zone.
• A)In the Duero river basin and Ebro
valley, villages tend to be small and
close each other
• B) In the South , Mediterranean area
, villages are bigger and farther
apart.
2. Rural Settlement in Spain has seen the
following changes
• 1. Some villages in mountain areas
and the interior of the Peninsula
, which had become depopulated
because of rural exodus, have now
been revitalised thanks to rural
tourism .
• 2.Villages in the coastal areas, which
used to be dedicated to fishing or
agriculture, have been converted
into tourist towns
• 3. Many villages close to big cities
have taken on urban functions
(residential or services...)
3. Changes inside cities
• Metropolitan areas in Madrid and
Barcelona have been consolidated
and they are the economic centres
of Spain.
• There are other metropolitan areas
less important such as Bilbao or
Malaga
• The most damaged urban areas
have been recovered such as
Guggenheim in Bilbao
• There are numerous projects have
modernized the cities
, Seville(EXPO), Barcelona(OLIMPIAD
AS) or Valencia(CIUDAD DE LAS
CIENCIAS)
