city of Savannah”

borne the battle and for his widow and his
orphan, to do all which may achieve and
cherish a just and lasting peace among
ourselves and with all nations.”

11. Confederate army was dwindling due to
casualties & desertions

Finally, Grant was able to capture Lee’s
men in northern VA
• Lee “There is nothing left for me to do but go
and see General Grant, and I would rather die a
thousand deaths.”

12. Lee surrenders to
Grant at
Appomattox, VA
April 9, 1865
• Met in private home
of Wilmer McLean
CSA soldiers
would NOT be
punished as
traitors

13. Nearly all CSA soldiers had surrendered
w/in a few weeks of Lee’s surrender
JW Booth shot him in the head at a play in
Ford’s Theater on April 14, 1865
• Booth was a Confederate sympathizer & a famous
actor
Lincoln died the next morning
