The Kean Community was provided an open conversation about the value of interdisciplinarity for teaching, research, and community engagement. Divided into three dialogue segments, the workshop included outlining the development of ID courses and programs at Kean, addressing the conceptual meaning of inter- versus multi- and trans- disciplinarity, and an introduction to the new Interdisciplinary Studies Center as a Kean resource, housed within the College of Liberal Arts. The workshop offered practical, teaching-focused reflections on the methods and strategies that can be used in the course structure, set-up, delivery, and assessment of ID courses and minor programs. Application of the methods can be used to foster future cross-college interdisciplinary work and engage students in the classroom or as part of creative and scholarly works.

This set of slides has been prepared for a workshop “Interdisciplinary methods for researching teaching and learning”. It summarises some ideas about intellectual work across conventional (disciplinary) boundaries in education. A number of them draw on the experiences writing Epistemic fluency book and working in the field of the leaning sciences more generally. The main message is the paradoxical tension between what educational research is as practice and how educational research is organised and institutionalised as a formal research field (aka. discipline). Research-as-science, ….as disciplined inquiry 1. Finite cluster of social sciences: psychology, sociology, etc 2. Loose groupings: curriculum, professional development, etc 3. Discipline(s) on its own right: the learning sciences, other institutionalised practices Research-as-project …as activity in the world 1. “Normal” science-as-project: compact vs. diffuse; explanatory vs. interpretative; conceptually driven vs. textually driven; explicit vs. implicit. 2. Researcher-participant collaboration 3. Multi-, Inter-, Trans-tribal research

OBJECTIVES OF TEACHING SCIENCE Education is a process of bringing about changes in an individual in a desired direction. It is a process of helping a child to develop his potentialities to the maximum and to bring out the best from within the child. To bring about these changes we teach them various subjects at different levels of school. Science as subject is included in the school curriculum from the very beginning. Before taking any decision about teaching science we should pose certain questions to ourselves, such as, • Why do we teach them science? • What are the goals and objectives of teaching science? • What changes does science teaching bring about in the behaviour of the students?

One of the chief objectives of education is the development of desirable attitudes in the students. It is, there fore, observable that the teachers must understand the various dimensions of an attitude. It is also to be kept in view that we are required to develop several attitudes in the students like attitude towards studies, attitude towards self, attitude towards colleagues, attitude towards certain ideals, etc. Attitude is purely a psychological concept. From psychological point of view it is difficult to discriminate attitude from other psychological concepts like interest, aptitude or appreciation. Still, it is defined as the readiness of mind to respond to an object, person or a situation. It is something that is learned by an individual as he learns many other things in life. Attitude is an orientation or disposition or a sort of readiness to react in a certain way. Which an individual carries with him in a sort of latent form and it may become manifest in an individual’s behavior only when an occasion arises. When an individual has to express his attitude he may react to them in a predetermined manner either favorably or unfavorably or in different manner. Hence this study attempts to know the relationship of achievement in science and scientific attitude among students and the found result from this study was that there is no significant relationship in achievement in science and scientific attitude.

In this presentation, I propose a naïve definition for defence education – that is education for people concerned with defence sector. They include, people from the three services – army, navy and air force; and civil servants from ministry of defence; and people from defence industry. Clearly, the emphasis is placed on serving personnel in the military and their educational requirements. While such broad definition might alienate security sector, it nevertheless captures the essential points being discussed in this presentation. Much of the characteristics of defence education are derived from the term military education, and are used here interchangeably. The idea of creating an educated military force been perceived as an unattainable goal and often the words “Military Education” evoke a cynical response such as – Isn’t that an oxymoron? Military is one of the important agencies of the state – hence it is logical to infer that educating them would be a national priority. However, many nations often reflect on the educational needs of their defence personnel in the aftermath of great disasters. For example, after the Gulf War in 1991, many analysts started reflecting on how well military education is addressing the study of asymmetric war? More recently, similar questions have been asked about cyber warfare.

The research methodology outlines how research has been performed, addresses an unusual technique as well a description of whether a researcher has introduced a new method or substantially modified one that already occurs. This article takes the initiative in research education to help students develop and retain research skills in planning, preparing, and writing research methods as one of the K 12 learning skills among senior high school research courses. The research methodology comprises basic components including the design, sampling, tools, collection procedures, analysis, and ethical considerations. There are three types of study designs qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods. One can explain the sampling procedure, size, subjects tested, and the location of the study in the sampling techniques. On the other hand, a researcher must mention the technical materials used in the study when writing the research instrument. The validity and reliability of the instruments should be tested before being used by the researcher. Since it involves gathering the information needed to resolve the research problem posed, data collection is considered to be the most important step of the research process. Data can be analyzed using a number of techniques, quantitative or qualitative. In addition, the study report should indicate whether and to what extent the studies comply with ethical standards. As a general rule, the research methods should be robust enough to reproduce the results. In this light, these overviews and exemplars help students demonstrate research writing skills and present research methodology throughout the research writing process. Almighty C.
