LiveWell project, starting in October 2012, is a 2-year duration initiative co-
funded by the European Commission through the Lifelong Learning programme – - Brežice General Hospital (Slovenia)
Grundtvig sub-programme.
LiveWell aims to develop an innovative Web-based Training and Social Networking System which targets:
• Parkinson Patients, to self-manage their condition, reduce the burden on their caregivers and promote their well-being and inclusion;
• Caregivers, with access to information, training and greater support through an online community;
• Health and Medical Professionals enabling them to remotely and continuously monitor patients´ participation in various activities,
helping improve patients´ effective rehabilitation.
The Web-based tool to be developed will have two main features/areas:
• Training with e-Learning Contents: The system will offer both Parkinson Patients and Caregivers interactive training
contents, exercises and information packages about Parkinson Disease and, and for Caregivers, how to deal with patients
and contribute to their active ageing.
• Social Community: Will present a learning and discussion platform tailored for Parkinson Patients, Caregivers and Health
and Medical professionals. It will allow interaction between Parkinson Patients while respecting all privacy issues involved
in the process. Moreover, through this Social Community, Caregivers and Health Professionals will also be able to
participate and interact, by providing tips about healthcare, exchanging ideas and concerns, or simply, sharing their
experiences in the treatment process of a Parkinson Patient.
Direct Target Groups: Indirect Beneficiaries:
• Parkinson Patients • Parkinson Associations
• Caregivers - families, friends and • Policy Makers
colleagues • Hospitals, Medical Clinics, and
• Health and Medical Professionals Other Health-related

1. Outputs and Interdependencies
WP 3 – Lead partner: Plymouth University, UK
WP3 outputs: Two deliverables,
• D3.1 Interactive Training Contents – format: HTML5 e-Learning Modules + PDF Report #1 [main WP3
report describing background and underpinnings, methods used, results, etc.])
• D3.2 User Manual (for above Training Contents) – format: PDF Report #2 [end user manual for training
system]*
WP3 learns from/is informed by: WP2 regarding Parkinson’s Patients and
Their Caregivers - Needs Analyses and Specific Training System Requirements
WP3 feeds into/integrates with: WP4 LiveWell’s Web-based Training and Social Community System
* RE User Manual: A highly intuitive, usable and understandable design of the Web-based system and associated e-learning modules will
negate the need for a lengthy user manual. Most software packages these days come with minimal or no printed user documentation, but with
plenty of inline and contextual help (embedded in the software’s user interface). We envisage LiveWell’s user manual to be a simple, short
document offering guidance to both patients and carers (e.g., by presenting a module index and content highlights to assist users in learning
what’s on offer and selecting the right module/content to answer specific questions or issues at hand) and informative screenshots detailing the
various system functions (including navigating around) and how to use them. A FAQ can also be added, e.g., to list recommended system
requirements and offer help in troubleshooting any issues users might encounter when accessing the system.

2. Main Highlights and Requirements
• WP3 involves the development of interactive training content for LiveWell’s target groups
(both Parkinson’s Patients and their Caregivers)
• Specifically: Ten e-learning modules will be produced in HTML5 format, ready to be uploaded
into the Web-based System (WP4)
• Modules will include informational and ‘How to...’ components, hand-picked links to relevant
quality Web resources (including third-party Social Media resources), interactive exercises
and other training contents, as well as motivational case studies
• Modules will also link to and make use of own Social Media and Community features within
LivWell’s Web Platform (WP4), e.g., to run multiplayer interactive exercises/quizzes and
games, and to facilitate communication and peer-to-peer support (e.g., via online groups,
chatting and forum discussions – moderation/quality issues to be considered)
• WP3 requires: Quality, evidence-based medical/clinical content matching the readability and
health literacy levels of target groups (written and compiled by neurologist(s) and patient
organisations) + suitable and engaging, learner-centred pedagogy (e.g., to design interactive
features, implement ‘checkpoints’ for monitoring trainer’s progress, etc.) + suitable, standards-
compliant Web technologies for online delivery (ensure cross-platform support and reusability)

Google can crudely filter/sort search results by ‘reading level’ (feature available since Q4
2010) - search example (parkinsonism):
http://www.google.com/search?q=parkinsonism&tbs=rl%3A1
It tells us that most currently available online material in English about Parkinson’s disease is written in a
language well above the reading-with-understanding level of the average patient/lay person in English-
speaking developed countries.

3. WP3 Standards and Tools
• The use of HTML5 ensures adequate and future-proof cross-platform support, particularly
on mobile devices such as tablets and larger-screen smartphones, as well as next-
generation operating systems such as Windows 8
• Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM—
http://www.adlnet.gov/capabilities/scorm): a collection of standards and specifications
maintained by the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative, Office of the US
Secretary of Defense, for Web-based e-learning; supported by many commercial e-
learning content creation tools
• Reusable Learning Objects (RLOs) and Generative Learning Objects (GLOs): see
http://www.rlo-cetl.ac.uk/ and many examples of ready to use RLOs at
http://www.rlo-cetl.ac.uk/whatwedo/rlos/completedrlos.php#gth and
http://sonet.nottingham.ac.uk/rlos/. In GLOs, it is the pedagogical pattern at the heart of
a learning object that provides the basis for reuse. The focus in GLOs is on reusable
pedagogical designs rather than content, while the main focus of RLOs is on
reusable/shareable content RLO-CETL (Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning):
