2. La Garrotxa, to sustainable tourism
La Garrotxa region renewed for the third time in 2016 the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism
(CETS) accreditation, achieved for the first time in 2001.
The aim of the CETS is to make the conservation and protection of natural, cultural, architectural and
intangible values, compatible with the development of the local economy, based on a sustainable
tourismmodel.
This task is developed by the public sector (District Council, Municipalities, Natural spaces with special
protection, organizations, ...) and the private sector (Turisme Garrotxa, with more than 220 member
companies), organized from the permanent forum which is Turisme Garrotxa.
More than 53 companies are committed with the collaboration between their company and the region,
in order to work towards a responsible and quality form of tourism

4. The Catalan language
What is the Catalan language?
Catalan is a Romance language (which comes from
Latin). It is spoken throughout a territory of 68,000
km2 of four European states: Andorra, Spain
(Catalonia, the Valencian Country, the Balearic
Islands, the Franja de Ponent -Aragon- and in Carxe -
Murcia-), France (Northern Catalonia) and Italy (the
city of Alghero on the island of Sardinia).
These territories have more than 13 million
inhabitants, of which about 10 million speak Catalan.
This means that the Catalan language is a medium
language of the European Union in the number of
speakers, along with languages such as Swedish,
Greek, or Portuguese in Europe.
In Catalonia, in the Valencian Community (Comunitat
Valenciana, where the Catalan language is called
Valencian) and in the Balearic Islands, Catalan is
declared by the respective Statutes of Autonomy as
the language of the territory and is an official
language, along with the Spanish.
