What is handball?
By Fátima Cabello, Antonio García and Dámaris Ariza.

Hanball is a mixture of football and
basket.

The object of the game is simply to
score more goals than the other team.

The ball is usually moved around the
court by passing or dribbling. Howe-
ver, the ball can be dribbled, but like
in basketball you cannot double-
dribble. You can dribble for as long as
you want (though you risk getting the ball taken away). You can only take at
most three steps after catching a pass.

You cannot hold the ball for more than three seconds without passing it.

Players have different rols. This way we have:

Line player/ Pivot: Large players who block shooters and try to disorganize the
defense. They also are shooters, usually from close-in range.
Left/Right Wing: They are offensive players who shoot at odd angles, usually
from the sides.
Left/Right Half: They are tall, agile players who much like quarterbacks lead the
offense. They shoot from the backcourt over the head of defenders.
What were the origins of handball?
This game comes from antiquity. It is believed that in
Greece played a game in which a ball of an apple size, do
not touch the ground. So it was described in "The
Odyssey" by Homer. This game is known by the name of
                     Ukraine game.

Although the game we know today as handball has its
origins in the late nineteenth century in central Europe,
when Konrad Koch, a Gym Teacher, invented a game
similar to handball today: the "Raffballspied" as a way of
                     training for gymnasts.

   HANDBALL MATERIALS
By Gema Cabello, Carmen Luque, Ana Ruiz and Santiago Chamizo

The measure of the ball for women
should be between 50 to 52 cm of
diameter. It must be between 58 to 60
                         cm for men.

                                        The gowns of handball
                                        consists in a simple shorts
                                        and a t-shirt.
Maybe, the most important part of our
equipment are the trainers. They must
assured the stability of our ankles and allow
                      us to run without slide.

Some players use knee pads to protect
their knees. They do that because is so
usual to fall down on the floor when
you are playing handball. Due to the
material of the pavement you can burn
                                              your skin.

Is usual to use a substance that is
applied in the yolks of the fingers in
order to catch the ball easily.

                                              The goalkeeper’s equipment is different
from the rest of players because he or
she is exposed to be hit by the ball.

Basic Skills
By Elena Hurtado, Juan Collado and Ana C. Gámez

To play handball you have to acquire some basic skills. Is not a difficult sport
and, as you have seen before, its rules are easy.

CATCH THE BALL FIRMLY. Handball is
full of quick movement and pass, close to the
size of ball wants you to keep up the ball
strongly with your hand forbidding your
opponent to regain the possession.

THROW AND PASS THE BALL
ENERGETICALLY. When you want to throw or pass de ball you have to do it
firmly and giving to the ball a straight trajectory. If it isn´t this way, it would be
really easy for our opponents get the ball.

                                             BE COORDINATED DURING THE
THROW AND JUMP. Most of the
success of your attacking game will
depend on this skill. If you are able to
do it correctly the opposition won’t be
                                             able to stop you.
AVOID THE OPPONENTS’ THROWING. When you are a defender you have to
use all your resorts to avoid the opponents’ throws.

KEEP THE ATTENTION, especially if you are a
goalkeeper, because any player can throw the ball at
any time.

BE ABLE TO CHANGE YOUR DIRECTION
DURING YOUR ADVANCE. You can do it thanks to
the dribbling of ball.

BE ABLE TO DO A FEINT. A feint is a movement you do
in order to surprise the enemy and hide your intentions.
HANDBALL IN SPAIN
By Daniel García, Manuel Aguilar, María Montilla and Mario Guillén

Handball is one of the most famous
sports in Spain, although its number of
supporters and players have drecreased
lately, we have a big tradition in this
sport.

Our national league is called “Liga
ASOBAL” which is composed by 16
teams some of whom are really
important in Europe. Good example is
Barcelona or Atlético de Madrid where the best players around the world have
played.

Near Palenciana we have three importants
teams. Pozoblanco, Castro del Río and
Antequera. The last one was played in
ASOBAL from 2008 to 2012. Our
                                      headmaster played for Antequera some
years ago, but he retired due to an injury.

The bests Spanish players are: David Barrufet, José Javier Hombrados, Lorenzo
