Tightly coupled monolithic stacks can present challenges for companies looking to take full advantage of the cloud. In order to move to a 100 percent cloud-native architecture, the Nike team realized they would need to rewrite all of the Nike Digital sites (Commerce, Sport, and Brand) as microservices. This presentation will discuss this journey and the architecture decisions behind making this happen. Nike presenters will talk about adopting the Netflix operations support systems (OSS) stack for their deployment pipeline and application architecture, covering the problems this solved and the challenges this introduced.

Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) has received significant interest recently. We believe that the right automation would bring significant value and dramatically shorten time-to-value for data science teams. Databricks is automating the Data Science and Machine Learning process through a combination of product offerings, partnerships, and custom solutions. This talk will focus on how Databricks can help automate hyperparameter tuning. For both traditional Machine Learning and modern Deep Learning, tuning hyperparameters can dramatically increase model performance and improve training times. However, tuning can be a complex and expensive process. In this talk, we'll start with a brief survey of the most popular techniques for hyperparameter tuning (e.g., grid search, random search, and Bayesian optimization). We will then discuss open source tools that implement each of these techniques, helping to automate the search over hyperparameters. Finally, we will discuss and demo improvements we built for these tools in Databricks, including integration with MLflow: Apache PySpark MLlib integration with MLflow for automatically tracking tuning Hyperopt integration with Apache Spark to distribute tuning and with MLflow for automatic tracking Recording and notebooks will be provided after the webinar so that you can practice at your own pace. Presenters Joseph Bradley, Software Engineer, Databricks Joseph Bradley is a Software Engineer and Apache Spark PMC member working on Machine Learning at Databricks. Previously, he was a postdoc at UC Berkeley after receiving his Ph.D. in Machine Learning from Carnegie Mellon in 2013. Yifan Cao, Senior Product Manager, Databricks Yifan Cao is a Senior Product Manager at Databricks. His product area spans ML/DL algorithms and Databricks Runtime for Machine Learning. Prior to Databricks, Yifan worked on two Machine Learning products, applying NLP to find metadata and applying machine learning to predict equipment failures. He helped build the products from ground up to multi-million dollars in ARR. Yifan started his career as a researcher in quantum computing. Yifan received his B.S in UC Berkeley and Master from MIT.

FAIR Data (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Re-usable) is seen as a route to releasing value from our existing data in AstraZeneca as well as setting us up to be able to do so more easily with new data we generate from here on. As we look into the dimensions of FAIR data, Findability can be addressed by indexing and cataloguing our data, accessibility by a combination of information classification, automation and manual processes (including understanding informed consent from patients/participants) and re-usability can be supported by provisioning processes into approved analytical environments. These are all significant challenges, with significant opportunities offered through optimisation and standardisation of supporting processes, but the biggest challenge of all is interoperability. Interoperability requires us to know whether two datasets of the same data type can be pooled for analytical purposes and how we can join together datasets of different types to answer complex questions. In this talk, I will show how AZ R&D is approaching the challenges of Interoperability to enhance the re-use of our data.

Just a few years ago all software systems were designed to be monoliths running on a single big and powerful machine. But nowadays most companies desire to scale out instead of scaling up, because it is much easier to buy or rent a large cluster of commodity hardware then to get a single machine that is powerful enough. In the database area scaling out is realized by utilizing a combination of polyglot persistence and sharding of data. On the application level scaling out is realized by microservices. In this talk I will briefly introduce the concepts and ideas of microservices and discuss their benefits and drawbacks. Afterwards I will focus on the point of intersection of a microservice based application talking to one or many NoSQL databases. We will try and find answers to these questions: Are the differences to a monolithic application? How to scale the whole system properly? What about polyglot persistence? Is there a data-centric way to split microservices?

It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
