Concept project built as part of RHOK Melbourne 2011. Focus was on Crisis and Disaster Management.
VicAlert is a unified, standards based alert transport platform for Victoria built upon the international Common Alerting Protocol (CAP). More info at: http://www.rhok.org/solutions/vicalert
VicSafe is an example of a web based map mashup that consumes the data published to VicAlert in real time and shows the alerts as clickable information sources. More info at: http://www.rhok.org/solutions/vicsafe
Existing Problem - Different emergency services publishing alerts - Different ways people connect/consume
A Solution - Centralised Format API - Uses CAP format (international standard) - Unifies all agencies - Allows innovation through accessible data - Let developers, private companies develop or integrate the data into applications
An interactive map mashup - Allows citizens to enter their location or where possible its HTML5 location aware - Shows alerts within the citizens area - Highlight severity - Showing alert radius area using Google Maps polygons - It integrates simply with VicAlert using the API discussed previously
What VicSafe could look like for instance
Critical Aspects - Internationally agreed standard (CAP) - Centralised, easy to access platform for storage and distribution of data (alerts) - Centralised does not mean single point of failure though, this platform can be distributed to handle load, etc - Google team suggested PubSubHubBub technology to manage load - Both of these build the foundations needed for innovation - Once you have data in an common and open format - Have this and the next RHOK event you'll be blown away
