2. Introduction
After graduating high school in 2015, Ben Schwartz of
Glenview, Illinois, began working towards a bachelor’s
degree in journalism at Ohio University, where he is also a
member of the school’s online radio station, ACRN. During
his 2015 winter break, Benjamin L. Schwartz volunteered
for Feed My Starving Children, an organization dedicated
to feeding the world’s malnourished children.
Feed My Starving Children relies on the generosity of
volunteers to pack their food before the organization
distributes it to children with hunger.
With permanent sites for volunteers to work in Minnesota,
Arizona, and Illinois, Feed My Starving Children also offers
MobilePack events, bringing volunteer opportunities to the
rest of the country through one-off events. Each shift lasts
for two hours, with each volunteer typically packing around
$50 of food in each shift.
3. Feed My Starving Children
While the organization allows children 5 and older to volunteer,
anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. School
groups are also encouraged, but require more adult supervision.
For kindergarten through second grade, Feed My Starving
Children requires one adult for every child. Grades three through
six require one adult for every three students. Four students for
every adult are allowed for seventh through ninth graders, and
tenth through twelfth graders only need one adult for every five
students.
To adhere to FDA regulations, Feed My Starving Children
requires jewelry and accessories to be removed before
volunteering. Prohibited items include watches, rings, earrings,
brooches, pins, necklaces and similar items. Medical alert
jewelry is an exception, as are wedding bands.
