10. Questions for OER & OEP in SS Africa
How to effect the move from funded
projects to institutional and continental
resilience?
Are we sharing / publishing, publicising,
and using what we develop?
Are we taking advantage of what is already
available? (e.g. AVU, TESSA, UNISA Open,
Open UCT, OER Africa?)
Roles of the AAU, and ACDE?

Understand your own strengths in order to support partner institutions
My experience through: Saide (PHEA); OER Africa; AgShare; COL; SIDA in Mozambique;
Overall OER & OEP activity - published policies?
Every partnership involves learning from all parties and at many levels.
Note these are ALL supporting elements
Change = mindset, practices, and importantly pedagogical practices
For external support agencies – KNOW YOUR TARGET ENVIRONMENT
Example of support: A highly participatory action approach was adopted, with some restructuring taking place as the work progressed in line with the approach. Stakeholders were identied from the outset. The intention was to model shared open education beliefs at each stage of development using existing OER wherever available.
Example of modelling openness
Example of ‘Global South’ research project - sharing not only project research outputs, but also structures & processes
Example of funded organisation with OER mission in Africa – how they engage with HEI partners & support OER projects in SSA.
Obviously, COL is an example of working with institutions and governments in areas including Ed Tech and OER.
Also some work with AVU.
Some institutions find their own way to accomplish goals in SSA – don’t have to do things the 1st world way.
What does the institution actually practice as opposed to what they say they believe in?
6th ACDE General Assembly and Conference: Open and Distance Learning, The Continental Education Strategy for Africa and The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4). Hosts: Association of African Universities (AAU) and Laweh Open University College. Access to GO-GN?
