Presentation by Kate Fernie about how controlled vocabularies and linked data can be used in systems and services, with demonstrations of the Share3D metadata capture tool tool, the Europeana Archaeology Vocabulary service and how the data looks in Europeana's EDM format and on the Europeana Collections portal.
2. Background
CARARE has been working with heritage organisations
and archaeologists across Europe since 2010 offering
them support and practical assistance in sharing their
datasets with Europeana.

3. CARARE receives datasets for aggregation to Europeana
mainly exported from databases but some captured using
spreadsheets or XML editors. We develop tools to help
make it easier for people to share their data and improve
the quality.

Two recent projects gave us an
opportunity to develop new services which
exploit vocabularies and linked data:
1. Share 3D: Metadata capture

services for mapping and enrichment

Share3D focussed on 3D models, but the
challenge is the same for all content.

6. Fast, secure and easy to create
We all want to catalogue our content as easily
as possible!
Printed vocabularies and wordlists are great but
these days when you enter data into a system,
the system can help ease the process.

16. Conclusion
Using vocabularies and Linked Data can ease data entry and improve
consistency.
Using Linked Data can improve discovery of your content by helping users to
find connected items using their own language.
