LANGUAGE USED IN ACADEMIC
TEXTS FROM VARIOUS
DISCIPLINES
CENDZ FLORES
To understand the characteristics and conventions of
language used in academic texts from different
disciplines.
1
2
To learn how to identify and analyze the language
features and terminology used in academic texts from
different disciplines.
3
OBJECTIVES
To practice writing an academic text using language
appropriate for a particular discipline.
Language is an important tool for communication
and expressing ideas. In academic writing,
language is used to convey information, ideas and
research findings in a clear and concise manner.
However, the language used in academic texts
varies depending on the discipline.
Understanding the conventions of language used
in academic texts from different disciplines is an
essential aspect of academic writing.
LANGUAGE
IMPORTANCE OF
LANGUAGE
In academic writing, the choice of language is especially
important as it can impact the writer's credibility and
demonstrate their expertise in a particular field. Different
disciplines have their own conventions, terminology, and
writing styles, and using language that is appropriate for a
particular discipline helps to establish the writer's credibility
and demonstrate their mastery of the subject matter.
Moreover, language in academic writing is
also a way of demonstrating critical thinking
and analytical skills, as it should be well
structured, concise, and precise. It should
also be free of errors and written in a clear
and professional manner, which helps to
enhance the overall impact of the written
work.
LANGUAGE
Language use can vary greatly across
different disciplines in academic writing.
Different disciplines have their own
conventions, terminology, and writing
styles that can impact the language used
in academic texts.
This variation in language use is due to
the fact that different disciplines require
different types of information to be
communicated and have different
audiences that the information is
intended for.
VARIATION
VARIATION
01 02
In contrast, Humanities and
Social Sciences may use more
descriptive language and longer,
more elaborate sentences to
provide context and explore the
nuances of an idea.
03
Language use in academic writing varies
across different disciplines, and it is
important for academic writers to be aware
of the conventions, terminology, and
writing styles used in their discipline in
order to use language effectively in their
writing.
For example, in the Sciences,
academic texts often use
technical language, precise
terminology, and concise writing
styles to convey complex ideas
and research findings.
EXAMPLES
• Sciences:
⚬ A research paper in Biology discussing the results of a study
on the effects of a particular drug on heart rate in rats.
⚬ A review article in Chemistry that summarizes recent
research on a particular type of reaction.
⚬ A case report in Medicine that describes the diagnosis and
treatment of a patient with a particular medical condition.
• Humanities:
⚬ A research paper in History that explores the cultural and
political impact of the French Revolution.
⚬ A literary analysis in English Literature that explores the
themes and symbolism in a particular novel.
⚬ A philosophical essay in Philosophy that explores the concept
of free will.
• Social Sciences:
• A research paper in Sociology that examines the relationship
between education and income.
• A survey report in Psychology that explores the attitudes of a
particular group of people towards a particular issue.
• A case study in Political Science that analyzes the political and
economic development of a particular country.
THE LANGUAGE FEATURES AND CONVENTIONS USED
IN ACADEMIC TEXTS CAN VARY GREATLY ACROSS
DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES, BUT SOME COMMON
ELEMENTS INCLUDE:
• Terminology: Each discipline has its own
specialized terms and concepts that are
specific to that field, and academic texts
will often use this specialized
terminology in order to convey ideas and
research findings accurately. For
example, a text in Biology may use terms
such as "photosynthesis," "mitosis," or
"gene expression," while a text in
Philosophy may use terms such as
"epistemology," "ontology," or
"teleology."
THE LANGUAGE FEATURES AND CONVENTIONS USED
IN ACADEMIC TEXTS CAN VARY GREATLY ACROSS
DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES, BUT SOME COMMON
ELEMENTS INCLUDE:
2. Sentence structure: The structure of
sentences used in academic texts can vary
depending on the discipline. For example, texts
in the Sciences tend to use shorter, more
concise sentences that are easy to understand,
while texts in the Humanities and Social Sciences
may use longer, more elaborate sentences to
provide context and explore the nuances of an
idea.
3. Writing style: The writing style used in
academic texts can vary depending on the
discipline and the purpose of the text. For
example, a research paper in the Sciences may
use a more formal and technical writing style,
while a philosophical essay in Philosophy may
use a more abstract and philosophical writing
style.
THE LANGUAGE FEATURES AND CONVENTIONS USED
IN ACADEMIC TEXTS CAN VARY GREATLY ACROSS
DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES, BUT SOME COMMON
ELEMENTS INCLUDE:
4. Tone: The tone of academic texts can vary
depending on the discipline and the purpose of
the text. For example, a research paper in the
Sciences may have a more objective and
impersonal tone, while a literary analysis in
English Literature may have a more subjective
and interpretive tone.
5. Referencing and citation: Each discipline has its
own conventions for referencing and citation, and
academic texts will follow these conventions to give
credit to sources used in the research. For example,
in the Sciences, a text may use a numerical system
for referencing sources, while in the Humanities and
Social Sciences, a text may use a parenthetical
citation system or a footnoting system.
The key characteristics and conventions of
language used in academic texts from
different disciplines include:
Specialized
Terminology
Objectivity and
Impersonality
Precise and Clear
Writing
Formal Tone
Structured
Writing
Each discipline has its own specialized terms and concepts that are
specific to that field, and academic texts will often use this
specialized terminology in order to convey ideas and research
findings accurately.
Referencing and
Citation
Writing Style
Academic texts are expected to be objective and impersonal, using
neutral language and avoiding personal opinions and emotions.
This is particularly true in the Sciences, where a more clinical and
detached tone is preferred.
Academic texts are expected to be well-written and easy to
understand, using clear and concise language and avoiding
ambiguity. This is particularly important in the Sciences, where
accuracy is critical.
Academic texts are generally written in a formal tone, using a more
sophisticated vocabulary and avoiding slang or colloquial
expressions.
Academic texts are typically structured in a clear and logical
manner, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. This
structure helps to ensure that the ideas being presented are well-
organized and easy to follow.
Each discipline has its own conventions for referencing and citation,
and academic texts will follow these conventions to give credit to
sources used in the research.
The writing style used in academic texts can vary depending on the
discipline and the purpose of the text. For example, a research
paper in the Sciences may use a more formal and technical writing
style, while a philosophical essay in Philosophy may use a more
abstract and philosophical writing style.
