For Small Businesses in & around Columbus
1
Have you heard the
news???
The City of Columbus is now offering FREE
training courses for Small Business owners and
their employees!
Small-business owners and their employees soon may be sitting next to city of Columbus workers in
classes to help them brush up their on-the-job skills.
As part of its efforts to help small companies, Columbus City Council has launched a pilot program
that will let employers and their workers take classes for free at the city’s training center in the Jerry
Hammond Center off East Broad Street.
The classes will be offered first-come, first-served to businesses with five to 50 employees, said
Councilwoman Priscilla Tyson. They are expected to begin in June. “We have great training for city
of Columbus employees,” Tyson said, “and see this as an opportunity to open these classes to small
businesses. People can come in and get what is needed.”
**Update – now businesses with 1-50 employees can take part in this training during the pilot
program through the end of 2013!
The training center offers about 400 classes and served more than 4,000 city workers last
year, said Drema Kirkling, Columbus’ citywide training manager. The center has three fulltime
employees, a part-timer and 12 instructors. The classes include training focused on so called soft
skills such as effective communications, creative thinking, time management, team building and
problem solving. There also is training for Microsoft computer programs as well as career
development, frontline management and leadership.
“It will be a wonderful opportunity for us to offer classes to small businesses,” Kirkling said.
“A lot of times small businesses don’t have the money to get training, especially for soft
skills.”
City Council earmarked $10,000 for the pilot as part of its plan to boost work-force development in
Columbus, Tyson said. The broader effort includes providing an extra
$400,000 for work-force programs this year. Tyson said the need for training opportunities was
identified during a series of small business roundtables held by City Council. She thinks providing free
access to city classes can have a big impact on small businesses while effectively managing taxpayer
money.
“Our investment in easier access to training will help businesses reinvest more into their
companies and their employees,” Tyson said. “It’s good for small business and that’s good
for Columbus’ economy.”

  • 2. 1 Have you heard the news??? The City of Columbus is now offering FREE training courses for Small Business owners and their employees! Small-business owners and their employees soon may be sitting next to city of Columbus workers in classes to help them brush up their on-the-job skills. As part of its efforts to help small companies, Columbus City Council has launched a pilot program that will let employers and their workers take classes for free at the city’s training center in the Jerry Hammond Center off East Broad Street. The classes will be offered first-come, first-served to businesses with five to 50 employees, said Councilwoman Priscilla Tyson. They are expected to begin in June. “We have great training for city of Columbus employees,” Tyson said, “and see this as an opportunity to open these classes to small businesses. People can come in and get what is needed.” **Update – now businesses with 1-50 employees can take part in this training during the pilot program through the end of 2013! The training center offers about 400 classes and served more than 4,000 city workers last year, said Drema Kirkling, Columbus’ citywide training manager. The center has three fulltime employees, a part-timer and 12 instructors. The classes include training focused on so called soft skills such as effective communications, creative thinking, time management, team building and problem solving. There also is training for Microsoft computer programs as well as career development, frontline management and leadership. “It will be a wonderful opportunity for us to offer classes to small businesses,” Kirkling said. “A lot of times small businesses don’t have the money to get training, especially for soft skills.” City Council earmarked $10,000 for the pilot as part of its plan to boost work-force development in Columbus, Tyson said. The broader effort includes providing an extra $400,000 for work-force programs this year. Tyson said the need for training opportunities was identified during a series of small business roundtables held by City Council. She thinks providing free access to city classes can have a big impact on small businesses while effectively managing taxpayer money. “Our investment in easier access to training will help businesses reinvest more into their companies and their employees,” Tyson said. “It’s good for small business and that’s good for Columbus’ economy.” ~excerpt from Business First article written by Jeff Bell & published April 12, 2013.
