2. Objective
Choosing a website platform can be a difficult decision. There are
dozens of platforms out there to choose from serving different
needs and wants.
The key to choosing a platform is based on your needs, wants, and
future goals of your site.
So ask yourself, what do you need in a website? Are you a creative
looking to show your portfolio? Are you looking to establish an
online store b.k.a E-commerce? Are you looking to present your
resume for potential clients?
To make things a little easier, I made a list of 3 platforms: Tumblr,
WordPress, and Square Space giving quick pros and cons.
3. Tumblr
Tumblr is one of the older kids on the block but still a
huge force on the internets. For creatives and business
folks alike, Tumblr keeps things simple and straight to
point. It hosts over 290 million blogs so you won’t be
alone and about 555 million monthly visitors.
4. Tumblr
Pros
1. Free.99. Tumblr is free and easy to set up. Take about
5 minutes from your busy day and you can have your own
account. It also makes it easy to port over your domain if
you’re not interested in the ‘.tumblr.com’ domain listing.
2. Tumblr is very social. You can follow other Tumblr
blogs, reblog (similar to a retweet or share), and this is a
great way to amplify your reach.
3. Tumblr is home for the creatives. Designers,
photographers, film makers, story tellers, and more utilize
Tumblr as their online showcase. Also, Gifs and Memes
made their mark on the internets but started their rise to
popularity from Tumblr.
5. Tumblr
Cons
1. Lack of customize features. Tumblr lacks plugins
which allows you to add little tweaks and knick knacks
that set your site apart. Now, for you coders, you can
pop the hood and dig into engine code.
2. No E-commerce capabilities. There are any
features that allow on-site purchasing.
6.
7. Wordpress
WordPress is the internet’s most popular platform with
over 60 million websites using the service. Though the
platform is over a decade old, it’s had time to grow,
mature and update with the internet. WordPress serves
as a one stop shop for all website needs and wants. For
the creatives and e-commerce, WordPress can be the
right choice for you.
8. WordPress
Pros
1. You can make a simple straight forward site or
customize it to an elaborate themed experience.
2. You can transfer your domain if you don’t want
the ‘example.wordpress.com’.
3. There’s a huge range of plugins that can turn your
site to a E-commerce powerhouse or fit the needs of
your goals.
9. WordPress
Cons
1. WordPress can be a bit overwhelming with so
many options available at your fingertips.
2. It takes time to get familiar with WordPress. The
more time you spend with WordPress, the better you’ll
get with it.
3. You have to learn some HTML to build the
customized features that you want.
10.
11. SquareSpace
One of the newer kids on the block, Squarespace sets
itself apart as a website slick builder. I’m pretty sure if
you listen to podcast, you’ve heard advertisement for
them. Squarespace is globally available in over 190
countries and streamlines the process of establishing
your website.
12. SquareSpace
Pros:
1. The setup is extremely easy.
2. Your site will look good on desktop and mobile
screens all the same.
3. Squarespace gives a wonderful range of templates
that are sleek, sophisticated, and clean.
13. SquareSpace
Cons:
It requires a monthly subscription: free, premium,
enterprise starting at $8
The menu options are very lack luster and simple. For
more complex sites, you menu will be limited.

15. Summary
Review the list and do some research on your own.
Find some of your favorite sites and make notes of
the features, what sets them apart, and more. Now
cross reference what you want for your own site
and determine which platform will best serve your
needs.
