2. 2
MWC Overview
Barcelona - 93,000 attendees
Areas of Focus:
1. Mobile (smartphones + tablets)
2. Wearables (smart watches /bands)
3. IOT
4. Smart Cities
5. Network / System architectures
The following slides are some highlights
& an overview of some of innovations.
3. 3
Mobile products were not the focus. It was VR,
Wearables and IOT that were centre-stage.
5. The bar has been raised for execution.
Apple is no longer unique in this respect.
6. IOT is becoming meaningless in it’s
ubiquity. The future is about the
intelligence of things and the value
they add.
7. Smartwatches
Well executed solutions looking for a problem?
Devices are referencing traditional paradigms. UX is still in
experimentation mode with brands trying to find what works.
No sign of the ‘killer app’ just yet.
LG Pebble
Huawei
8. Samsung gets serious
Taking Apple on head-on in design & execution.
Samsung S6 vs Apple iPhone 6
Samsung VR Samsung S6 Edge
Samsung S6 Edge
9. Huawei says Hello
The biggest presence at MWC was from a Chinese brand.
They had some very well executed products and a focus on
and are clearly becoming a major challenger.
10. VR Immersion & Control
Evolving and maturing as a category. Immersive
experience compensates for shortcomings and
intrusiveness of hardware.
Peripherals are potentially a big opportunity for
Design Partners.
HTC VR headset
HTC VR controllers
11. Where are the tablets?
Notable more for their absence than any significant innovation.
HP 13in Nokia 7in with gesture UI HTC
Sony 10in
12. HP
Experimenting with gestural interfaces
(very poor experience). Interesting 12in
tablet with handwriting recognition via
depth sensor.
13. HTC
CMF focus, high quality flagship smartphone. ‘Re’ camera (Bemo
competitor) had a very big presence on their stand.
