Martin. The father is a willing the sons coats. Which they are never
supposed to alter.
● The three brothers coats are the central symbol of a story.
● Outwardly plain and simple, the coats are the brother’s sole inheritance
from their father, who promised that they will last a lifetime if cared for
properly.
● These coats represent the practices of Christianity as originally revealed
commanded by God , And as stipulated in The Bible.
THREE COATS
7. THREE BROTHERS
Each brother represents one of the primary branches of Christianity in
the west.
Peter : Roman catholic Church
Jack : protestant church
Martin: church of England
The brothers have inherited three wonderfully satisfactory coats by their
father and they have his will to guide them. Although the will says that
brothers are forbidden from making any changes to their coats. They do
nearly nothing but alter their coats from start. The three brothers
immediately begin alterning the coats to suit their ideas of fashion.
8. ● Peter :
● Peter, the oldest of the three brothers in the tale is arrogant, scheming and
ill- tempered. He is named after Saint Peter.
● Martin :
● Martin is the middle born of the three brothers and most reasonable of the
three. He is named after German religious leader Martin Luther and
represents the moderate Protestantism that Swift associated with the
Anglican Church.
● Jack :
● Jack , the youngest brother is enthusiastic but also hot - tempered and
irascible. Named after french theologian John Calvin. He represents the
radical protestant known collectively as dissenters.
9. The father's WILL
The father's will represents the Bible, whiich Swift regards as Christianity’s
fundamental instructions.
Practices prohibited by the Bible cannot and should not be embraced by the
church, while practices required by the Bible cannot be set aside.
In their youth three brothers exemplify this kind of Christianity . All three
brothers start off faithfully following the will, but they are gradually
corrupted by outside influence.
They failling to find permission to change their coats though they declared
that their father will allows them to add shoulder knot.
