08.30 GURU SESSION
Winning With Strategic Innovation
Costas Markides, Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, London Business School, UK
The goal of every company should be strategic innovation—that is, finding ways to play the
game in a totally different way from its competitors. Strategic innovation has the potential
to take small companies and elevate them to industry leadership status. And it can allow
newcomers to take established industry leaders and destroy them in a short period of
time. It sounds wonderful but it’s also very difficult to achieve. How exactly can a company
develop such a differentiated strategy? And how can it implement it successfully?
Behind every successful strategy, there are a few simple but fundamental principles.
Strategy is all about making difficult choices of what to do and, more importantly, what not
to do. These choices are about three things: Who shall we target as customers; What shall
we offer these customers; and How can we play the game in this industry. These are not
easy choices to make but a company needs to make them. Simple as this may sound, the
worst strategic mistake that we see in practice is company after company failing to make
these choices.
These choices must be creative enough to allow a firm to differentiate itself from its
competitors. A strategy that lacks creativity is useless. Your goal must be to analyse the
market and then identify a unique position for your company. You will achieve uniqueness
by: (a) targeting different customers from those that other competitors target; (b) offering
products and services that are substantially different from those of competitors; and (c)
delivering value to the customer in a different way.
Even the best of strategies will fail unless they are supported by the appropriate
organisation environment. This consists of the incentives, the structures and processes
and the culture that the organisation puts in place.
Strategy must not only be communicated to everybody in a company but more
importantly, it must be “sold” to people so as to win their emotional commitment towards
this strategy.
Strategy must remain flexible enough so as to adjust to the never-ending changes in the
outside environment. Flexibility cannot be dictated—it must become part of the fabric of
the organisation.
Professor Markides will first use practical examples and interactive exercises to highlight
each principle. After making these points, he will explore how to develop and implement
such a differentiated strategy.

Dr Robert Kaplan
Professor, Harvard Business School and
Co-founder of the Balanced Scorecard
USA
Few people have contributed as significantly to
the art, and especially the science, of business
strategy as Robert Kaplan. His Balanced Scorecard
is the premier tool for aligning a company’s current
actions with its strategic goals. This performance
management system helps business leaders clarify
their corporate vision and align people, business
units, and resources with a unified strategy.
In his research and writing, speaking and
consulting, Robert develops ways to link cost and
performance management systems to strategy
implementation and operational excellence.
The BSC approach is also being successfully
applied by governments and nonprofits
throughout the world to improve transparency,
governance, and measurable social outcomes.
Robert Kaplan and coauthor David Norton have
written five landmark books on The Balanced
Scorecard, describing how it works and outlining
best practices for its implementation. Together,
these books have transformed the business
strategy landscape and made Robert Kaplan one
of the most valuable speakers in the fields of
business strategy and leadership.
Robert Kaplan is Marvin Bower Professor of
Leadership Development, Emeritus at Harvard
Business School and a former Dean of the
Graduate School of Industrial Administration,
Carnegie-Mellon University.

Strategic Alignment –
How To Align Operations
To The Overall Strategy
Practical ways to achieve alignment using the BSC
framework!
Workshop Overview
The Balanced Scorecard is a strategic planning and
management system that is used extensively in
business and industry worldwide. One of the key
benefits of the Balanced Scorecard is strategic
alignment – between the Corporate and its Business
Units or between the various departments of a
company.
But simple as it may seem, most companies lose out
on the full benefit of the Balanced Scorecard because
they fail to realise this alignment, though individual
strategies and scorecards may be excellent. This
workshop will present best practice examples of how
alignment can be achieved through careful planning
and execution. The practitioner will demonstrate
through real cases, the approach of cascading or
linking various scorecards to achieve alignment.
Key Topics
●● Alignment through cascading and linkages
●● Typical alignment oversights faced by business
leaders
●● Importance of cross-functional overview to
ensure alignment
●● Importance of multi-discipline themes to achieve
alignment
Who Should Attend
●● Business leaders and senior managers

strategic alignment and focus

which companies may face during their BSC
implementation
●● Developing core management skills of strategy
