• Cardiff is the capital of
Wales. The city is located
in the south of the
country at the mouth of
the River Severn, about
300 km from London.
Although Cardiff is the
UK’s largest city, with a
population of about
346,000, it is one of the
smallest European
capitals.
3. Cardiff Castle
• One of the city’s major tourist
attractions is Cardiff Castle. Welsh
banquets are popular at the Castle,
they include food, drink and
entertainment just as they would
have several centuries ago.
4. • Cardiff is well known for its
sport, especially rugby.
• During the Rugby World Cup
this year this is what the
visitors saw at the front of
the castle!
5. Cardiff Millennium Stadium
• Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium has one of the
largest sliding roofs in the world. It can seat
74,000 and has hosted Madonna, One
Direction, The Rolling Stones and Paul Mc
Cartney as well as rugby and football matches
and other sporting events.
6. St David s Centre
• St David’s Centre is one of the largest
shopping centres in the UK.
• They have reduced their carbon footprint by
over 10% and so far have reduced their
footprint by 12 tonnes of CO2 a year, they
also have also introduced a green roof area.
• They have beehives on site, plus there are
many, many more things in the pipeline.
7. Shirley Bassey
• Many famous people
have come from
Cardiff, including the
singer Shirley Bassey.
She has sung the
theme songs for three
of the James Bond
Movies:- Goldfinger,
Diamonds are Forever
and Moonraker.
8. • Shirley was born in Tiger Bay in 1937.
In 1909 the first million-pound cheque was
signed at the nearby coal exchange.
9. Cardiff Bay Today
• Since Shirley was born the Bay has been
transformed and has attracted thousands of
tourists every year.
10. Gareth Bale
• Our most famous footballer from Cardiff is
Gareth Bale who plays as a winger for Real
Madrid and the Wales National Team.
• He was the top goal scorer for Wales in their
successful qualifying campaign for UEFA Euro
2016 scoring 7 goals.
11. Dr Who
• Doctor Who is a British
television science-fiction
series which is currently
being filmed in Cardiff. It
has been dubbed into
many languages and runs
in over 200 countries. It is
the longest-running sci-fi
series in the world.
12. Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Eirwg
• About ten percent of the people in Cardiff
speak Welsh. Our school, Ysgol Gymraeg Bro
Eirwg is a designated Welsh Language school.
