Message from Reuel Hunt
President, ICF Colorado

Connection – community – contribution . . . (continued)

The core tenants of Professional Coaching are sometimes lost in the everyday hustle and bustle of
life, especially when starting and sustaining a coaching business. At our January meeting, Michael
Stratford challenged us coaches to Provoke, Evoke, or Go Home. While the essence of coaching is
to build connection and an alliance with our clients and potential clients, there is a time for being
provocative.

I say that the core tenants of coaching hold true whether our clients are executives, professionals,
teams, organizations, other coaches, kids, parents, couples, even inmates…and some core tenants
coaching has at its foundation include:

   1. Alliance/relationship – designing up front how the relationship will be, trust, expectations,
and desired outcomes. Coaching is a co-created relationship.
   2. Connection - our clients hire us because they like us and can connect with us, and feel
        connected and supported.
   3. Heard - our clients feel heard – one thing that is most missing in our society – even with all
the social media “connection”. I feel that the current run on social media is a reflection of
how hungry we are to be heard and to connect.
   4. Perspectives and awareness– we help our clients learn how to look at any situation through
different perspectives or lenses and to become more aware and conscious, both locally and
globally. And, this entire letter is just my perspective at this sitting.
   5. Effective communications – how we listen with powerful questions and direct
        communications.
   6. Action & Accountability – designing action, planning, and goal setting, and managing
        progress and holding accountability.

We are blessed as a relatively new profession to already have a vibrant international association
holding ethical guidelines and professional standards – ICF-Global.

And a reminder of the ICF Colorado Chapter and Board purpose statement, a statement answering
the question "we exist for the sake of what?":

"We support the growth and sustainability of the coaching community in our area by connecting
our members with valuable resources such that they thrive personally and professionally."

We are here as stewards of the wellbeing of the coaching profession and community, and as a part
of the professional coaching community, your input, support, and engagement is needed,
respected and honored. Please let me know your thoughts, how you want to support and engage
with our community. You can reach me at President@ICFColorado.org.

Looking forward to seeing you at this month’s meeting with Amanda Trosten-Bloom speaking on
Appreciative Inquiry.

Wishing you success in your coaching journey,
Reuel J. Hunt

For the meeting on February 7th, we are happy to present Amanda Trosten-Bloom, who is a
widely acclaimed consultant, master trainer, energizing speaker, and pioneer in the use of
Appreciative Inquiry.

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a revolutionary way of inspiring and engaging people individually, in
teams, and in large-scale organizational and community change. Since its inception in the
mid-1980’s businesses, non-profits and communities around the world have achieved stunning
results, using AI for strategic planning, merger integration, culture transformation and more.
Featured in Fast Company, The Christian Science Monitor, Training, Human Resources Executive,
the OD Practitioner, it is also the subject of hundreds of articles, texts and educational programs.

This program introduces participants to the philosophy and practice of this approach to change
that has been described as "a radical shift in mainstream organizational thinking." Providing
participants with a brief experience of AI, as well as case studies of global and local organizations’
success, it will demonstrate how Appreciative Inquiry can support ICF members – as well as the
association itself – in identifying and aligning around strengths, envisioning bold new futures,
embracing change, and increasing motivation and engagement.

About Amanda Trosten-Bloom
Amanda Trosten-Bloom is a widely acclaimed consultant, master trainer, energizing speaker, and

EXPERIENCED COACHES SIG
February 13, 2013
7:00PM - 9:00PM
Location: see information below
Facilitated by: Reuel Hunt & Lauren Fisher

5+ Years of Coaching Experience? You’re Invited to Check Us Out

The next meeting of the Experienced Coaches SIG is February 13th from 7-9pm.

In our new format, we focus and go deeper on one topic that surfaces during our check-ins, and
we keep our check-ins bottom-lined and time sensitive so we can go deeper on a chosen topic.

Summary of the January SIG meeting: We began with check-ins all around, including sharing of
resources relevant to each person's check-in. The check-ins led to a discussion on this topic: "We
explored individual answers to two questions, 'What does community building mean?' and 'What
has inspired you in your life?' Answers to the first question took two paths: community building in
the coaching community and community building with other communities – business/corporate,
legislation, media, non-profit/philanthropic, education, other associations - and it was fascinating
to see what inspiration had led different ones in the group to be successful experienced coaches."
So, I ask you: "What has inspired you?" and "What does community building mean to you?"

Location:
3855 S. Hibiscus Way Denver, CO 80237
(west on Hampden from 1-25 to Happy Canyon)

Please contact Reuel to receive more details about this SIG.

In the Spotlight: Jena Sawyer

ICF Colorado is proud to feature Jena Sawyer as our member "In the Spotlight." After 20 years of
corporate accounting and finance experience, Jena Sawyer discovered yoga when she couldn’t
sleep. She had everything she thought she wanted in life, yet she felt empty, unfulfilled, and
unsatisfied. Yoga did help her sleep, and she also discovered that movement held a key to deep
levels of wisdom and clarity. As her life transformed, she became interested in helping other
women walk their own path to fulfillment, satisfaction and peace. Through her coach training with
Newfield Network, she gained valuable tools and insights, and an even greater commitment to
guiding other women on their journey.

Jena loves working with women who feel like something is missing. They’re overwhelmed,
frustrated, and exhausted, and they think the key to the results the want is to try harder. They
take great care of the people and details around them, and look forward to “someday” when
they’ll get to relax or make the difference they know they’re here to make.

Article:
The Final Global Annual International Coach Federation Conference –
October 2012 in London

by Reuel Hunt, ICF-CO President

It isn’t the last global conference, just the last annual – and I hasten to say that the regional
annual conferences around the world are filling the gap very well, and there are plans under way
to have global conferences every three years or so. For those of us who have been attending the
annual conferences with coaches from around the world each year for several years, we will miss
this amazing annual event.

The conference began in London for me on Wednesday morning (October 3rd) with an all- day
Global Leader Forum – ICF Chapter leaders from around the world followed by several
presentations from ICF Global Staff and Board who focused on what has transpired in the coaching
profession around the world the last year and what we see looking forward. It was an inspiring
way to begin the conference.

Every year I have found the keynote speakers to be profound, especially this year with Brené
Brown speaking on “Daring Greatly: How the courage to be vulnerable transforms the way we live,
love, and lead.” I found it to be right on and very timely.

Here is an outline of the conference with the theme of “Connect, Learn, Inspire:”

environment and would enjoy sharing emerging trends with the coaching community? Then
this has your name written all over it.

Membership in the ICF Colorado

For our former members who have allowed their memberships to lapse, we invite you to renew
right away and re-commit to being a part of our community of coaches. Our educational
programming has been very powerful over the last year, and we’ve had some wonderful meetings.
Renewing your membership will also give you the opportunity to renew the friendships you made
while a member.

For those of you who aren’t yet members, we invite you to tour our website, check out the past
and upcoming programs and call if you have questions. We invite you to join our chapter and
become engaged in the work of learning together and creating a strong community.

So why should coaches and prospective coaches want to join ICF Colorado? As a member of ICF
Colorado, they will join a wonderful community of individuals committed to making a difference in
the lives of their clients, connecting with other coaches, developing themselves, and contributing
to the profession of coaching. Our community includes brand new coaches as well as very
experienced and highly successful ones. We also welcome those who are exploring coaching as a
profession and who have not yet started the process of becoming a coach.

There are many benefits to membership in ICF Colorado starting with being able to attend the
monthly meetings at no additional cost. The educational presentations during our meetings are
delivered by highly successful coaches with special expertise and are but one of the resources
available for helping our members develop and refine their coaching skills and build their
businesses. As a member, one has the opportunity to network with other coaches and participate
in one of the Special Interest Groups (SIGs). The SIGs are led by experienced coaches, giving
participants the opportunity to learn and engage in lively discussion. Two of the three SIGs are
held immediately prior to the meeting, and we encourage everyone to check them out. In addition
to the SIGs and monthly educational programming, we also have other programs and events such
as workshops and tele-classes, with reduced rates for members.
When highly experienced coaches, coaches building their practices, and those who are just getting
started join together to support their chosen field, magic happens. So please help us grow our
membership and be part of the magic we can create.

It’s very easy to join by going to the ICF Colorado website and filling out the form:
http://sn.im/joinicfcolorado.

Thank You!

resources include such great tapes as "High End Coaching" and "Personal Evolution" by Thomas
Leonard and Frederic Hudson's book, The Handbook of Coaching.

In addition to developing leadership and coaching skills, audiotape topics are specific to
self-promotion and networking, use of assessments, therapists as coaches, attraction principles,
team coaching, self- coaching, emotional intelligence, appreciative inquiry, speaking, and getting

February 2013 ICF Colorado Newsletter

  • 1. FEBRUARY 2013 IN THIS ISSUE: Message from Reuel Hunt, President Next Monthly Meeting: February 7, 2013 Special Interest Group (SIG) Meetings Interested in serving on the ICF Colorado Board? ICF Colorado Meetup Groups In the Spotlight: Jena Sawyer Article: The Final Global Annual International Coach Federation Conference - October 2012 in London Calling All Volunteers! Membership in the ICF Colorado ICF Colorado is on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter & YouTube! Resource Library General Meeting Information Contact Us Message from Reuel Hunt President, ICF Colorado Connection – community – contribution . . . (continued) The core tenants of Professional Coaching are sometimes lost in the everyday hustle and bustle of life, especially when starting and sustaining a coaching business. At our January meeting, Michael Stratford challenged us coaches to Provoke, Evoke, or Go Home. While the essence of coaching is to build connection and an alliance with our clients and potential clients, there is a time for being provocative. I say that the core tenants of coaching hold true whether our clients are executives, professionals, teams, organizations, other coaches, kids, parents, couples, even inmates…and some core tenants coaching has at its foundation include: 1. Alliance/relationship – designing up front how the relationship will be, trust, expectations,
  • 2. and desired outcomes. Coaching is a co-created relationship. 2. Connection - our clients hire us because they like us and can connect with us, and feel connected and supported. 3. Heard - our clients feel heard – one thing that is most missing in our society – even with all the social media “connection”. I feel that the current run on social media is a reflection of how hungry we are to be heard and to connect. 4. Perspectives and awareness– we help our clients learn how to look at any situation through different perspectives or lenses and to become more aware and conscious, both locally and globally. And, this entire letter is just my perspective at this sitting. 5. Effective communications – how we listen with powerful questions and direct communications. 6. Action & Accountability – designing action, planning, and goal setting, and managing progress and holding accountability. We are blessed as a relatively new profession to already have a vibrant international association holding ethical guidelines and professional standards – ICF-Global. And a reminder of the ICF Colorado Chapter and Board purpose statement, a statement answering the question "we exist for the sake of what?": "We support the growth and sustainability of the coaching community in our area by connecting our members with valuable resources such that they thrive personally and professionally." We are here as stewards of the wellbeing of the coaching profession and community, and as a part of the professional coaching community, your input, support, and engagement is needed, respected and honored. Please let me know your thoughts, how you want to support and engage with our community. You can reach me at President@ICFColorado.org. Looking forward to seeing you at this month’s meeting with Amanda Trosten-Bloom speaking on Appreciative Inquiry. Wishing you success in your coaching journey, Reuel J. Topic: "Appreciative Inquiry: A Positive Approach to Personal and Organization Development" *CCEUs: pending For the meeting on February 7th, we are happy to present Amanda Trosten-Bloom, who is a widely acclaimed consultant, master trainer, energizing speaker, and pioneer in the use of Appreciative Inquiry. Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a revolutionary way of inspiring and engaging people individually, in teams, and in large-scale organizational and community change. Since its inception in the mid-1980’s businesses, non-profits and communities around the world have achieved stunning results, using AI for strategic planning, merger integration, culture transformation and more. Featured in Fast Company, The Christian Science Monitor, Training, Human Resources Executive, the OD Practitioner, it is also the subject of hundreds of articles, texts and educational programs. This program introduces participants to the philosophy and practice of this approach to change that has been described as "a radical shift in mainstream organizational thinking." Providing participants with a brief experience of AI, as well as case studies of global and local organizations’ success, it will demonstrate how Appreciative Inquiry can support ICF members – as well as the association itself – in identifying and aligning around strengths, envisioning bold new futures, embracing change, and increasing motivation and engagement. You’re Invited to Check Us Out The next meeting of the Experienced Coaches SIG is February 13th from 7-9pm. In our new format, we focus and go deeper on one topic that surfaces during our check-ins, and we keep our check-ins bottom-lined and time sensitive so we can go deeper on a chosen topic. Summary of the January SIG meeting: We began with check-ins all around, including sharing of resources relevant to each person's check-in. The check-ins led to a discussion on this topic: "We explored individual answers to two questions, 'What does community building mean?' and 'What has inspired you in your life?' Answers to the first question took two paths: community building in the coaching community and community building with other communities – business/corporate, legislation, media, non-profit/philanthropic, education, other associations - and it was fascinating to see what inspiration had led different ones in the group to be successful experienced coaches."

Meetup Group with Tom Lietaert, ICF CO Treasurer: Third Thursday of each month at 7:00pm Location - Erie, CO (specific location in Erie to be announced) Questions? Please contact info@icfcolorado.org In the Spotlight: Jena Sawyer ICF Colorado is proud to feature Jena Sawyer as our member "In the Spotlight." After 20 years of corporate accounting and finance experience, Jena Sawyer discovered yoga when she couldn’t sleep. She had everything she thought she wanted in life, yet she felt empty, unfulfilled, and unsatisfied. Yoga did help her sleep, and she also discovered that movement held a key to deep levels of wisdom and clarity. As her life transformed, she became interested in helping other women walk their own path to fulfillment, satisfaction and peace. Through her coach training with Newfield Network, she gained valuable tools and insights, and an even greater commitment to guiding other women on their journey. Jena loves working with women who feel like something is missing. They’re overwhelmed, frustrated, and exhausted, and they think the key to the results the want is to try harder. They take great care of the people and details around them, and look forward to “someday” when they’ll get to relax or make the difference they know they’re here to make. Click here to read more about Jena Article: The Final Global Annual International Coach Federation Conference – October 2012 in London by Reuel Hunt, ICF-CO President It isn’t the last global conference, just the last annual – and I hasten to say that the regional annual conferences around the world are filling the gap very well, and there are plans under way to have global conferences every three years or so. For those of us who have been attending the annual conferences with coaches from around the world each year for several years, we will miss this amazing annual event. The conference began in London for me on Wednesday morning (October 3rd) with an all- day Global Leader Forum – ICF Chapter leaders from around the world followed by several presentations from ICF Global Staff and Board who focused on what has transpired in the coaching profession around the world the last year and what we see looking forward. It was an inspiring

The ICF Colorado Board of Directors Membership in the ICF Colorado For our former members who have allowed their memberships to lapse, we invite you to renew right away and re-commit to being a part of our community of coaches. Our educational programming has been very powerful over the last year, and we’ve had some wonderful meetings. Renewing your membership will also give you the opportunity to renew the friendships you made while a member. For those of you who aren’t yet members, we invite you to tour our website, check out the past and upcoming programs and call if you have questions. We invite you to join our chapter and become engaged in the work of learning together and creating a strong community. So why should coaches and prospective coaches want to join ICF Colorado? As a member of ICF Colorado, they will join a wonderful community of individuals committed to making a difference in the lives of their clients, connecting with other coaches, developing themselves, and contributing to the profession of coaching. Our community includes brand new coaches as well as very experienced and highly successful ones. We also welcome those who are exploring coaching as a profession and who have not yet started the process of becoming a coach. There are many benefits to membership in ICF Colorado starting with being able to attend the monthly meetings at no additional cost. The educational presentations during our meetings are delivered by highly successful coaches with special expertise and are but one of the resources available for helping our members develop and refine their coaching skills and build their businesses. As a member, one has the opportunity to network with other coaches and participate in one of the Special Interest Groups (SIGs). The SIGs are led by experienced coaches, giving participants the opportunity to learn and engage in lively discussion. Two of the three SIGs are held immediately prior to the meeting, and we encourage everyone to check them out. In addition to the SIGs and monthly educational programming, we also have other programs and events such as workshops and tele-classes, with reduced rates for members.
