2. Definitions of Orthoses, Orthotics, &
Orthotist
The term Orthosis is derived from the Greek
word ”Ortho” meaning straight, upright, or
correct. These all are suitable descriptions of
the functions of most of the Orthoses – to
help maintain straight limbs or correct a spine
that is not upright.

The Orthosis is an external mechanical appliance,
that applies forces on body segments in order to
provide Stability, support, correction and
assistance to Neuromusculoskeletal system.

4. Orthotics:
Orthotics is the science of designing, fabrication
and fitting of Orthoses

5. Orthotist:
The Orthotist is a specialist who designs,
fabricates and fits an Orthosis.

6. According to ISO,
An Orthosis is an externally applied device used
to modify the structural or functional
Characetristics of the neuromusculoskeletal
system.
The term Orthotics describes the theory,
practice, and manufacture of Orthoses.
The Orthotist is a person skilled in the field

As an Orthotist
You should understand the patient’s abilities,
functions, and limitations which are the a
critical part of selecting/designing an
appropriate Orthosis. In other words, “it is the
patient’s abilities that count, not the
diagnosis, in determining the appropriate
Orthosis for him/her.

9. How do you identify the most
suitable Orthosis?
It is the important part of the Orthotist’s
contribution to the patient’s care is to identify
the most effective Orthosis for a patient given
applicable parameters: age, sex, height, weight,
muscle strength, and range of motion. Level of
activity, life expectancy, social setting,
psychological readiness as well as funding the
source are some other considerations. But the
main consideration, however, should be the
goal for wearing the Orthosis.

10. What are goals of LLOs?
The goal of a LLO is to achieve one or more of the
following:
1. Relieve pain by reducing forces around joints.
2. Assist locomotion.
3. Maintain correction of deformity or joint
replacement after surgery.
4. Influence muscle tone.

11. Functions of Lower Limb Orthoses
Supportive:
• Lower Limb Orthoses support weak limbs by weight bearing.
• They stabilize by maintaining the joints in equilibrium.
• Relieve pain from abnormal pressure.
Corrective:
• Correct flexible deformities.
Preventive:
• Prevent secondary deformities by keeping the limbs in normal position.
• Protect & maintain surgical corrections.
• Protect painful areas.
Assistive:
• Assist a person having neouromusculoskeletal conditins to achieve normal
functions to the extent possible.
All these functions may be overlaping with each other. The Orthoses may have one
of more of the functions mentioned above.
